"SMYRNA"
The documentary film, "Smyrna: The Destruction of a Cosmopolitan City, 1900-1922" opened this past January in Athens at the Benaki Museum -- one of the most prominent institutions in Greece. "Smyrna" played every day for more than two months, with 3-4 screenings per day, to great acclaim from the critics and the general public. Long lines stretched in front of the Museum. The screenings were so successful that the Museum, for the first time in its history, remained open during evenings. The critics spoke about an exceptional and profoundly moving documentary.
Film Director Maria Iliou and historical consultant Alexander Kitroeff, bring to life the rich story of the city that was tragically lost in 1922.
Rare film footage and photographs of the historic Anatolian city (today's Izmir) sourced from European and US institutions and private collections are pieced together.
First, second and third generation 'Smyrniotes' of Greek, Armenian and Turkish ancestry recount family stories, while American and European historians present the big picture.
It is a documentary that brings a new perspective to Smyrna, namely the notion of a cultural-wealthy city that lives on in some ways in the large cosmopolitan cities of today.
"Smyrna" will start playing in the commercial cinemas in Greece the 13th of September 2012.

You are right in many ways Ali Uzay. The history of the Balkans is extremely complex and all ethnicities have rightful claims as to what they consider their land, their history and cultural heritage. But we must all condemn any form of ethnic cleansing and mindless acts of revenge on unarmed civilian populations. There is no question that what happened in Smyrna in August/September 1922 can never be justified.

@@prasannasridharan3730 Well i 've made this comment 4 years ago... I know/knew for some time that many Kurds supported the Turks in the massacre, they took Armenian lands too, however the planification was made by Turks, many Kurds made the dirty job against some privilege or lands because the Turks had not always the balls to do it, so sometimes they paid other to have blood in their hands while they were looking elesewhere whisteling, rather hypocrite to say the least However i know that many Kurds (and even somtimes Turks) tried to hide/help successfully or not Armenian people or families Not everything is pure black and pure white... i'm conscious of those shades that we should have when we talk about those nightmarish events, nightmares with open eyes... A quite important minority of Kurds (treator ?) support the Turkish power, i know personally one of them named Imam , a friend of my family, but we rarely talk about politics, the subject is too delicate, he is somebody that we can count on when we need help, so we cannot juge people solely on political opinions I know even some Kurds joined Isis as well (some Turks too of course), each western countries has its own sick citizens who joined this failed cause, the situation is more tangled that most people think here in occidental countries

BLESS the director & writer, producers, and sponsors of this film for telling a little-known story. My Mother's family was from Smyrna and narrowly escaped the fire by pure luck. They emigrated to America in early 1922. There is also an excellent book on the subject by Marjorie Housepian-Dobkin titled "Smyrna 1922: the Destruction of a City."

One of the films narrators, Giles Milton, published a book in 2008 titled: Paradise Lost: Smyrna 1922: The Destruction of Islam's City of Tolerance. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about this subject.

I am not Turk. I am arab of Algeria and i have a question: you didnt ask yourself why turks who accepted greek and armenian presence for six centuries of coexistence would suddenly evacuate them? What was the reasons? And why turks who already won their city back would burn it?!. If you are neutral and reasonable you should know that greeks incited by british and french had massacred turks in greece bulgaria romania and balkans. Armenians incited by russia killed turks. Greeks invaded turkey and arbored greek flag in izmir smyrna. What do you expect turks to do? Offer the greeks soldiers some roses or maybe their wifes?. Another fact: the armenians who knew that they would be expelled from the city burned their houses to avoid turks take benefit of te houses and so the fire spread to greek and turkish sections due to wind. Remember that before navarin battle 1827 more than half of greece population was muslim. Muslims were slaughtered brutally and mosques burned or made churches. The west approved the extermination of muslim saying greece took back their land. Ok same logic: turks took back their city from greek army. But with one diffrence : turks didnt kill armenians and greeks like the christians did to muslims. Turks simply evacuated them because they betrayed turkish nation and substituted turkish flag by greek flag. And please dont lie. Christians burned their houses preferring not to leave them for the turk. Turk army didnt need to burn their prestigious and admirable city because they already won as the greek fron collapsed. When turk soldiers entered izmir they found their city devastated by the christian-set fire.

your response here is not correct. the Greek genocide of the Greeks and the Armenians started a decade before Smyrna was torched. Tell the whole story. Don't be an apologist for The Genocide(s) by the Turks be you Arab, Christian or Jew. Do you pretend to be as rational when it comes to issues of Israel's right to exist as a nation state in what was Palestine (a Roman misnomer)?

@@peterkocoris7873 He posts this same comment on every video about Smyrna on the platform. Part of the Erdogan's campaign to belittle and justify the Turkish atrocities against their ethnic neighbours in the invaded lands. There are numerous well paid Western academics pilling papers and articles about Turkish generousity and infidels' ungratefulness. Turkish students wholeheartedly believe slaves and victims of devshirme where only benificial of these practices, and expect to enter EU with this mindset.

Many of the Muslims of Thessaloniki abandoned it and moved to what today is Turkey. The ones that didn't leave were forced to move to Turkey with the Treaty of Lausanne and the population exchange. The Jews of Thessaloniki prospered after the Balkan Wars and were treated well by the Greek state. The majority of the Jewish population of Thessaloniki died by the Nazis when Greece was occupied in WW2. The ones that survived, started to immigrate to the State of Israel. That's what happened to the Jews and Muslims of Thessaloniki.

You need to understand why Muslims fought for independence shortly before Sept. 1922 in order to understand why cosmopolitan Smyrna became a city of one religion like Thessaloniki. Christians alike fought for independence and turned Greece a Christian land. In similar Muslims fought for independence and turned Turkey an Islamic land. If you regard one bad the other good, this means that you are chauvinistic. Be conscientious and make the world a peaceful planet.

So many of these ignorant converstaions seem to repeat themselves: People calling other religions intolerat and violent is not intolerant at all? I personally disliked the film as it was ahistorical and lacked any understanding of the grander narrative before 1900, and which of course goes beyond 1922. Izmir remained a cosmopolitan city for decades. 5-6 September took place under the Republic...
