Had the same sentiment. How about we normalize sex and how nature works to our children to educate them rather than shame it. It's a natural behaviour. The more you know the more we can protect ourselves too.

@@Geoffthespider sorry to say this, but that's unfortunately wrong :/ most animals in zoos mate, even tho they're in a big stress and/or bad enclosures. Especially fish will breed, but actually all animal have the instinct do mate, no matter how bad their situation is. [not saying that snake discovery's zoo is bad, it's pretty awesome! but zoos in general aren't that good..] (I would link a video of a ex-zoo employee explaining this, but it's a German dude :d sorry)

@@ozzy.666 Depend on animals, animals would usually mate less or reject impregnation if they're stressed or their basic need isn't satisfied, though it's true a lot of animals do mate no matter what and it's just instinctual, getting the female to not reject the male or not miscarrying the baby is hard if the zoo take care of the animal awfully, but it does depend on animals

Honestly if nobody has taught her and she genuinely doesn't know what it is by that age that's a really bad thing, that's how kids get pregnant at 12/13 because they don't know what they are doing and what the consequences are so a boy could easily talk them into it etc. It happens far more often than you'd think unfortunately and it's the reason health education is so important

yeah i don't get it when i was kindergarten we had police men/women and nurses visiting frequently and with the teacher on how to ask/react in some situation for help if a mister shown us his penis or offer candies to prevent rape and kidnappings EVERY WEEKS (i was 5 ) .it was in the 90 in Canada Quebec ! @@Meraxes6 if you're in the market for a 150 g to 300 g lizard, you should really check them out. For a large fraction of people, they're one of, if not the best monitors you can get. They're in the same general size range as a bearded dragon, but are much more active, athletic, and curious (although, by extension, not as good of a lap lizard). If you do decide to get one, try to ask the breeder how friendly the baby is. Out of the 4 I had hatch out last August, 3 were on the level of Clint's emerald tree skinks right out of the egg. The fourth one is a little monster that is just starting to show signs of calming down. I kind of suspect there are genetics at play.

My females first clutch was 11 eggs, 7 fertile and 4 duds. Now she's gravid again and I'm hoping she will lay them soon. She has already started to do some testdigging in the enclose.

When I saw the enclosure, I quite honestly was a bit taken back. Quite literally, every single thing written or demonstrated online is contradictory to multiple aspects of the way they are keeping them. I'm not saying its wrong or right, I am curious about who made the decisions up to this point and the details on how things work out aside from what we see here. Then again, they are "surprised" by the clutch and didn't even expect it.

My grandparents were kind of odd. I understood animal mating behavior at a very young age (grew up surrounded by farm animals) so I knew exactly how babies were made. Yet the human process was a scandalous subject. My grandmother pulled me into the bathroom (house was completely empty) and explained periods to me in a whisper (again we were completely alone in the house) when I was 8. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience. It was so weird that my family could be both so open and also so closed off at the same time. My kids will definitely know about the birds and the bees from a young age. They will also learn about human anatomy and reproduction as soon as they begin asking questions. No shame attached.

karens are so weird smh like you see this kind of thing all the time in nature anyways. As if kids this age didnt know. Like theres this 7 year old kid i know and he was (with his family) in our house to watch a movie and we thought the movie was safe but then there was a sex scene. That rascal just started laughing, as in it knew he's not suposed to see this, while we were trying to find the remote lol. I had a friend about a year younger than me, who had a mom who was COMPLETELY off the wall bonkers controlling about her daughters learning ANYTHING about sex or reproduction. It wasn't even a religious thing, it was just this weird- like SUPER weird total denial of it and refusal to talk about it at all. I had to teach my friend about periods myself when I was 12, and like ALL kids with parents like that do, she came to me to ask me a question one day. She had overheard someone use a certain word that started with the word master, and ended with ation.... she didn't know what that word was. She asked me. I told her. Of course I did! I was a GOOD friend who KNEW THINGS! Also she already knew what... that particular action was, she just didn't know the WORD for it. After I told her, she suddenly paused, her eyes went wide, and she looked over at me and in a breathless, devious voice, she said "Watch *this*." She got up, went out to the kitchen where her mom was working on dinner, and in the sweetest, most innocent sweet girl voice I have EVER heard out of another human being, she said, "Mommy? What's (THAT WORD)?" (censoring cause I know there are much younger kiddos on the channel sometimes). Her moms eyes just about BUGGED OUT OF HER HEAD! She gasped out loud, started spluttering and fumbling her words, and asking where my friend heard that from, ("Two boys on the bus said it and I didn't know what it meant...?") and then she managed to blurt out that it "wasn't anything she needed to know about" and to "go play with her toys". She came back into the room and we just started cackling, busting up with laughter. Pro tip parents... teach your kids about this stuff. Let them know what words mean. It not only helps them recognize innapropriate behavior from others, but also will help them communicate with you if they ever suffer any abuse. It will also teach them what's happening so they can AVOID IT HAPPENING TO THEM... My friends little sister, because she had ZERO education, ended up pregnant by 15. My friend had a kid by 18. Because they'd both not been taught anything, and had gone off to learn/figure it all out themselves. Teach your children about their bodies!

To be honest I think people overreact. I guess saying things like "mating" could be triggering for a very select few people, but then again, they likely wouldn't be at a zoo anyways. Or if they were, at that point, either they made a huge oversight or they had it coming. Lol. There's really nothing wrong with saying the word in public, in my opinion.

I only feel sorry for the girl for having parents like that as its unlikely she'll be able to get access to a good sex education which everyone should be entitled to for their own health. The only person who should embarrassed about their childish behaviour is the mother herself.

No no. I wished someone bashed the hell out of my parents for being crazy. It would have made me feel better rather than having everyone ignore their stupid behavior.

I am all for educating kids about sex ed from the very beginning. I still don't get why people think they need to be an appropriate age to learn something perfectly natural that almost all species do. If they don't understand the basics, how can you possibly encourage them to have ethics, health, and safety in mind when they hit puberty? I also don't understand how someone thinks they can keep their daughter "pure" when the girl in question does not even know what it is? That said, we should respect the mother's right to raise her child the way she wants to, because every child is different and matures at a different rate. It's not realistic to complain, but nothing is stopping her from steering her daughter away from seeing it.

... I'm tempted to suggest the zoo keep some pamphlets or cards with say sites about planning parenthood or scarleteen on them for occasions like this. Not for the parent, that likely won't help. Altho it would be funny. Just... Accessible. Tho that's above and beyond their purview

Besides, the kid was 14 apparently. From my experience, sex ed in school usually starts in like 7th grade anyway, so the mom was just being paranoid lol. Did she seriously expect her teen kid to not already know that animals do it too?

You would think she still would’ve learned about it by now, maybe from an internet source or whatnot. If she genuinely hasn’t, I feel bad for her for being sheltered this much. Young people like her not being allowed to learn about this stuff properly before they go out and do it is why the US has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies sadly.

Reminds me of my daughter seeing a video of an orca at seaworld tossing fish out of the water to bait the birds to come closer. The orca got a tasty feathery snack, and my daughter's eyes were so wide, lol.

She was also raised on a farm where they bred and slaughtered their own cattle and she has never been shy about telling me where our food comes from. When the seagull died she just told me that it was okay to feel bad about it but in the end it's nature and animals need food as well.

Imagine being mad about animals mating. On the one hand it'd be kinda rude to stereotype that as typical North American behaviour (I know they've got many, many subcultres over there), on the other hand I've never heard so many stories of people trying to be prudish about nature as I have from the US. Funny thing is that young kids won't even understand what the monitors are doing until the adults start acting weirdly. It could honestly have been an educational moment than an awkward one.

@@kwiggy5091 I’ve never raised quail before. It’s pretty hard with game fowl though because you have to keep all the Roos separate from each other. I personally love them the most out of the chicken breeds. I just hate what people used to use them for.

Well It's technically turning "spring" so the chickens start laying based off mainly the molts if they have finished and if they know spring will be soon-ish.

Schools in my area of the US close for extreme amounts of snow that the plows can’t clear to make the commute safe in a reasonable amount of time (a meter or so) or in temperatures too low for students to safely wait at a bus stop. Usually the buses also have trouble running at those temps because they use diesel fuel.

School only closes for extreme temperatures at I think -45°C in my area

It's definitely interesting how different places react to different scenarios. I'm from the south (southern United States). We rarely see snow and only drop below freezing a few days per year. Six inches of snow can shut down an entire town here. Possibly less. Mostly because we never see snow so when we do everyone panics. Even mention the possibility of snow and the grocery stores get wiped out like it's the end of days. I always found the last part funny because even the biggest snows are usually melted within a day or two, four at the absolute max.

It depends on the type of buildings and the area. Last year my whole region was shut down for a week because a weird week of snow and ice. Like it was in the -12Cs and there was no power or water in my apartment because we are built for the 30Cs . It was coldest it been in the area in over 75 years. Today we were 28.3C but tomorrow night we are suppose to be 4C. I'm hoping it doesn't freeze like last year.

How can they make kids go to school when its that cold? Classes get canceled here at that temp because its not safe for kids to wait outside for the bus. Not all kids have sufficient winter gear or parents that can drive them so they close in extreme temps usually.
