We always show baby snakes hatching from their eggs, but we've never showed you what goes on after that exciting day. Getting baby snakes to start eating can take lots of patience, and sometimes some creativity. Enjoy watching us troubleshoot to get baby snakes to eat!

The frog scenting thing killed me. All I can imagine now is me sitting in my computer chair, minding my own business, and then somebody bursts into my apartment to wipe a whole chicken across my face: "It's human scented now" 💀😂

I found this trick to make ball pythons eat: Place a frozen roden in a plastic food container and close the lid so the scent can't escape. Wait till it's unfreezed, then put the container in hot water to make the roden warm enough for pythons. It keeps the food dry (a lot of ball pythons don't like wet food) and preserves as much scent as possible (some snakes wouldn't take food as it doesn't smell strong enough). Saved me a lot of time, upvote for Emily to see

I am proud to say that the "dirty pastel" from the hatching video, who was also labeled as "sassy" on her card, eats whenever food is offered, and while she'll give a bit of a hiss when she first sees the lid open, she's very easy to handle, and is a bit of a cuddle bug! She's enriched my life, and has so much personality. I appreciate how hard y'all work to make sure that the snakes not only go to good homes, but that the snakes are READY to go to new homes.

@@ashleykauffman3712aww! That’s awesome. Definitely try doing the tail to find out the gender. I got my baby banana female about 2 months ago, she was listed as male but I did it myself and saw no hemipenes. About a week later, I got an adult male pastel Yellowbelly! I’ll be happy to breed them together (hopefully) when she’s big enough.

I loved that little baby's very ferocious hiss, what an adorable little angry shoelace! Also, baby balls absolutely do prefer a certain temperature in their f/t meals or will ignore them entirely. A lot of mine really like their food nice and warm and if it's any colder than that, they refuse. Another trick for stubborn eaters is to feed a smaller size meal and more often, working them up to the correct size meal for their size and age.

I like seeing the personality through eating. My hognose always did well frozen thaw, but also is just a super ravenous guy. So younger if you drop fed (which he preferred) and he wiggled over it before finding it, he would smell himself and try to eat that... cause he thought he was the mouse, so he didn't get to drop feed for awhile due to the lack of brain cells

Hey Emily, I'm only about half way through this video and wanted you to know that whilst it would've been great for more of the snakes to eat on camera in the first half of the video, you and your husband more than carried it in terms of humour and just doing what you generally do. I love the way you treat the defensive behaviour of the "spicy" snakes as cute and almost "patronize" them when they get hissy and strike. It is nice to watch something informative as well as amusing and entertaining, so well done to the two of you.

Just a thought in case it works for someone else who can’t think what else to try ❤ some of my more picky eating baby snakes don’t like the water defrosting method, I think because the water washes off some of the scent, so for those, I defrost the rodent in sealed empty tupperwear (no water) in the fridge for a few hours instead - this reduces how much scent is lost and gets them eating! (I then switch to water defrosting later on) - I guess it makes sense but it took me a while to find this out with help from some other very kind keepers lol so worth a try if it helps anyone else with some frustratingly picky eaters like mine lol 😅

It'd be really cool to do a little "follow a baby snake through the process of being adopted out" and pick an individual to record clips of. Being put in its baby bin, first meal, prep for ship. As for what snake: maybe one that's really unique, the prettiest one of a given/special clutch, maybe patreon could get to choose a baby from a given clutch.. or they could record all the babies from one of the small clutters, where it's only 2-3 babies. Some of the footage they would already have, and the other clips could probably be outsourced to staff as they could be done on a cell phone.

@@MysteryTako - what on Earth makes you think I would tell her we could start looking for the right one if I didn’t believe she was prepared to care for it? She spent 2 years learning before I agreed to it, even though I owned snakes until I started college & med school. I bought her a baby banana pastel last month and she loves him to pieces. We are currently tearing down an old gun display case that SHE located on OfferUP to create a massive enclosure & she has drawn out all of the detail designs, down to the double waterfall feeding 2 pools. We hike in the desert every weekend looking for the right pieces of sun bleached wood & saguaro skeletons, and she knows exactly how to treat them in order to protect Monty from hitchhiking parasites, or any other concerns. She keeps track of his feeding schedule, she cleans his current enclosure, she stays on top of his health by periodically checking his gums & critically assessing his scales, she cleans & treats his water & is hyper vigilant about his lighting & under enclosure heating elements. She even learned all about the genetic combinations involved in creating his morph, just so she would know where he came from….but that probably has to do with her mother & I being doctors. I would never just buy an animal for anyone who wasn’t prepared in every way to protect & maintain its every need. I didn’t even get my own bees until I’d researched them for nearly 3 years & cared for wild bees for 2 of those years. She doesn’t live with me, so I got her parents permission first…even though he lives at my house. But, I bought the house next door to my sister’s & my niece’s fingerprint is programmed into the deadbolt lock…she comes & goes as she pleases & has her own bedroom if she wants to stay over. I assure you, despite this being a group endeavor (her mom had snakes when we were growing up, too…she’s my little sister, so reptile fever took her over in a nearly identical manner) she was beyond ready before she ever even held a snake. And she’s incredible with him.

I tried starting my baby balls on frozen thawed, but they can be such picky eaters that I figured out it was more important that they actually take their first couple meals because it isn't difficult (generally) to switch them later. So all of mine start out with live mouse hoppers, and after they've taken 3-4 of those, I can normally switch them to f/t within just a couple more feedings using fresh mouse bedding and making sure they're hot.

I heard many KZfaqrs say things like: ‘that one snake is so much calmer and sweeter off camera’ or ‘you were fine earlier, why are you mad now?’ While on camera. Many stressed out snakes also directly hiss and strike at the cameras. Anyway, I just hope that filming them doesn’t reduce their chances of taking their first meal!

I got my first cornsnake at the end of November, something that has been on my bucket list to do for over 15 years, so I was very excited. I was told by the breeder that as he was only 4 months old, he may be very nervous and may try to bite me. When he arrived after being shipped, first thing I noticed as I opened the box was that he was in blue, so I thought I was going to have lots of sass from him. Turns out he's a sweetheart... He started letting me handle him after 24 hours in his new vivarium. His setup is a little bigger than recommended for a baby, but he has loads of decor including 4 hides so plenty of places to feel secure and he now uses all of his enclosure. He ate for me 3 days after I got him, has had regular meals ever since, and he shed just before or just after he ate for me the first time, which came off in one complete piece. He has also never even tried to strike at anything other than his large frozen/thawed pinkies, which he takes so politely from tongs while being fed in a separate plastic box. His favourite thing to do when I'm handling him is to tongue-flick at my nose, then climb along my glasses onto my head. He is the cutest. 😂

Great video. They actually make scents you can buy and put on the prey. I’ve seen ppl use it in videos to get baby venomous snakes to eat that are frog and lizard eaters. They make quite a few different scents. I got three ball pythons in the past year and they were fed live. Once they got acclimated to their new homes I had no trouble getting them switched over to f/t. I always made sure the rats were very warm bc they really sense the heat. Those banana morph babies were so pretty. Bananas are my favs. Really enjoyed this video 💜🐍

I just got a chance to visit the zoo and it's FANTASTIC. My 18 month old son loved it so much. He's obsessed with animals and the guided tour (which for anyone who hasn't noticed on the website before is totally free with admission) was just the coolest thing to him. He doesn't grasp that Rex isn't just another kind of dog yet but we'll get there.

@snakediscovery @emily I love the video! I’m no professional but my personal BPs do not like wet mice or rats! The thing that has always worked for me was putting the mice in a sandwich bag before putting it in the water to thaw! I hope you see this ❤️❤️

Yep. When I worked with balls and boas, none of them liked wet food. Dry and warm was always the mantra. Boosting this in hopes they see it!

A tip I learnt with feeding Balls in general because they prefer warm food is to dip the head in hot water for a few seconds it also helps with aiming for the food My males were picky for a few months cause we love ball pythons and dipping the head works so well if they turn their nose up the first time I offer it to them

Our baby Ball was on live mice and we had to take about 2 - 3 months moving to frozon thawed. she has been on them for about 6 months now and she still is a little picky preferring a very warm mouse, we have offered rats and she never takes them. I have heard that is is common for Balls to prefer extra warm and mice, but I have heard all kinds of stories on other preferences. Our Reticulated Python (3 years old) takes frozen thawed rats easy peasy and hardly needs them heated at all.
