The Crab Ride is one of the most powerful back attack systems in modern jiu jitsu. Espen Mathiesen and Tommy Langaker from Norway have innovated this position to become two of the most successful modern competitors in Jiu Jitsu. On top of their success they trained at a small gym when developing these systems through smart training. This video espen goes through some of the most important and foundational aspects of attack with this position. If you would like more technique from Tommy and Espen check out their website www.wulfingacademy.com

Great video, also at the end I realised that I had listened to your podcast with Tom Halpin, the inside position. So it's nice to put a face to the voice. 🤙

Love the tripod concept. similar to the Nick Salles video. No wonder these guys are masters of these positions!

Yeah the tripod concept makes a huge difference for me in keeping my legs tight in the crab ride. Use to have so much problems with people pushing the feet off.

Yeah, you know the rolling calf lock you do to the opponent from when the OPPONENT has you in de la riva (while you are standing), where you roll through and grab them.. that would be a good one to show, because I feel it's a fancy way to find the crab ride

Also, I'm pretty sure the reverse half guard (taught to me by andre galvao #namedrop) is where I started developing the hook switching and where people try to get there butt on the ground alot..

Hello Jon and Espen, I have a couple of questions for you relating to the crab ride. 1. How do you prevent leg attacks while being in the crab ride? 2. How do you handle being in the crab ride when they slam there hips down to the mat, I find it very difficult including with the pants grip. so I end up finishing the position with leg drag. 3. Does the tripod concept help deal with those situations?

This is the way I found that crab ride works best for me, with the head away, and tripoding. I learned a version that is a middle ground between the “wrong” way he showed and his own version, with the head closer but still tripoding. For me his version works best because you can really pressure into the back of their legs, making them much easier to manipulate.

Yeah I feel a strong tripod makes all the difference in being able to keep the pressure on the hooks. That was making a huge difference for me Immediately.

@jsl8461
@jsl8461 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly which position you're talking about, but I would note that for all the berimbolos and crab rides, the chance of getting leg locked is very, very low provided you spend the time and effort to learn how to defend them. I understand, in the beginning you do get caught in toe holds, knee bars, 50/50, heel hooks, etc. But at a high level, you will almost never see someone get leg locked while doing a berimbolo / crab ride, regardless of whether it's gi or no-gi.
