I've seen a ton of reactions on this song but no one quite got it right the first time like you did. Kudos. Anything Stromae touches is done to perfection. An artist in every sense of the word.

I second that. Thank you for your elaboration and discussion behind this. As a Christian I’ve always wondered why my “community” fails to understand the concept that we all sin, although it isn’t discussed, is why we have no room to judge or look down, but rather to love our neighbors equally. Very well done!👍

Wow the video was epic, and I liked the baroque style mixed with modern music. I bet that was purposeful, because this is about the oldest profession. Either way it's a good message from Stromae. Everyone deserves respect and dignity, no matter what walk of life they are in. I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you 🙏 I don't know what your beliefs are, but speaking as a mother myself, I am certain your Mum is so proud of you and she knows how much you love her. Sending hugs and love ❤

Great analysis! Fun fact, his wife came up with the video concept. Some other things I find interesting in this video (warning, long-ish and potentially pretentious af): 1. The juxtaposition between the military setting (typically, a very masculine one) and the theme of sex work (typically associated with women). 2. The musical juxtaposition between the strings and the drums. The strings give the song this high-brow air, while the drums are inspired by baile funk, a Brazilian musical style typically associated with marginalized groups and those from the “lower classes”. Combined with the feminine/masculine theme, it makes for a really interesting contrast between sex-working women - one of the most stigmatized groups in many societies - and military men - viewed as brave heroes ready to die for their country/what they believe. This in spite of both groups oftentimes being in very dangerous situations and, as you said about sex-workers, putting their lives on the line. 3. The ambiguity of this being a fictional country, while also incorporating imagery from the real world. For example, the female soldiers are doing a Riverdance inspired routine, and the carrying of the casket is apparently inspired by actual funeral rituals in Ghana. I interpret this as a way of showing how this power-imbalance is everywhere, regardless of geographic or cultural setting.

Your analysis of this video is just brilliant! Thank you for that, it's a pleasure to hear you speak. 🙏🏽👌🏽 The story of this video is very touching and stomae wrote it after seeing a TV show on the subject of sex workers. In this program, the son of a prostitute came to tell his childhood story and how a man who was his mother's client came to tell him that he had slept with her. The boy didn't take kindly to this and replied that he needed a new PlayStation, so the man could go back to sleeping with her. Stromae was shocked to see the lack of respect these women suffer, and how the whole of society has an opinion of them, denigrating and insulting them as they do what they can to survive and educate their children as best they can. He decided to write this song as a tribute to these women and to the courage of this little boy who stood up to defend his mom and her dignity . It's so beautiful, so powerful!❤️🔥 Stromae is a man of the people and has great emotional intelligence. I'm proud that he's Belgian, that he's such an incredible, sensitive human being. We need more people like him. ❤🙌🏼

Thank you for this perfect reaction to this Stromae title. I've seen a lot of reaction to "Fils de joie", but you managed to nail this title brilliantly. It seems so well understood, it feels like you've already listened to it over and over again. But it seems not, it was your first listen to "Fils de joie". Well done !

First, I've gotta say, I'm throughly impressed that you got so much out of a first viewing, Stromae is a very subtle artist who likes to play in words play and hidden meanings, layering them on top of each other until it's hard to get all of it. The translation is sadly a bit lacking in this video, for some obscure reason. A lot of what is lost is of course iq word's play as it is Stromae's forte (the title itself is a word play), and they won't work in english. But even some simple things have been changed, for example in the intro, it says that the sex worker is dead in French, and missing in English. I think what the client meant by 'being judgemantal is easy' is that it's easy for people to judge him for going to a sex worker, as he continues to say 'Especially if you've never tasted it (tried it), and being alone for a long time is hard.' He wasn't talking about him judging her, as it is obvious that he didn't even consider her enough of a human to even judge; he was just using her as an object (which is why the son speaks about dehumanization, the others didn't dehumanize her : The pimp simply thinks of her as lesser, and the cop seems to pity her (it's translated as "you're pathetic" but he actually says "you poor woman", and he let her go free even though she's an illegal sex worker (as hinted at when he says she doesn't pay taxes)) I'll try to explain some of the hidden meaning of the song, as it goes above the lyrics and has mostly to do with the title. "Fille de joie" is an old euphemism for prostitute (meaning daughter of joy), the title is '"Fils de joie" or "Son of joy", which doesn't mean a male prostitute but rather is a reference to a popular insult in french speaking countries : "Fils de pute", which is an equivalent to 'son of a bitch' but would literaly translate to 'Son of a whore". Stromae is trying to denounce the use of this slur, by literally making a song about the son of a whore saying that even if his mom was a prostitute, it doesn't give anyone the right to insult her. The broader meaning is to say that whoever your mother is; she gave you live and you should respect her, and all mothers; and insulting someone by insulting his mom is not acceptable. Also, during the last chorus, as you say, the son is trying to make people listen, and he somehow succedded when the crowd rose up, singing 'Eh-OH!" in opposition to what the cop was saying, but as he continues singing, fewer and fewer voices are heard, showing only the other 'prostitues' singing along when he says 'she's a hero", and by the end of the chorus, there's no one left singing a long with him, signifying that he did not convince them fully.
