To all the twitch and YT comments talking about the "early 2000s writing" of these games, specifically the misogyny and fat jokes, let me say this: The time period is an *explanation* for the shitty jokes, not an excuse. It being written then instead of now doesn't make it any less yucky and hard to watch, and Penny is completely allowed to react accordingly (I myself was very much cringing or out loud complaining cause some of it is ROUGH). There's plenty of games/media written around that time that don't do this and are still funny! And having nostalgia for these games doesn't remove how uncomfortable the jokes you didn't get as a kid are. All the same, you are 100% valid in enjoying these games. Just remember that people are entitled to their opinions and Penny is allowed to not play games on stream because she doesn't want to. I understand someone not fully enjoying something you love can be upsetting but you cant control how they feel, only how you react to it. I dont wanna sound too preachy tho so just anyone reading this take care of yourself and others, and if you love these games, fuck yeah, more power to ya

What I've come to realize is an important part of media consumption is recognizing the flaws in media you enjoy. It's fine to like these games as long as you don't claim that they're perfect in every way, because nothing is, and if we don't recognize that we can't improve as a society.

I 100% agree. I personally found some of the jokes funny because I always viewed Daxter as a purposely douchey character, but yeah. The writers definitely took things too far in some cases. There are good ways to write misogynist characters (Johnny Bravo is the shining example of a character who objectifies women because the audience is supposed to see him as the bad guy.)

Was really interesting to hear your fresh takes on this series, sorry you didn't enjoy it so much. If you are interested in seeing what people love so much about this series, there's videos from Breadsword and The Gaming Brit Show that are super high quality and very well written. (Though I can't really excuse the misogyny, didn't click just how bad it could be until I heard you talk about it). Edit: also just wanted to say, I think these games did a lot right to warrant still being considered good outside of nostalgia. I think Jak 2's approach to combat and level design is really well designed, and as a trilogy, there's truly nothing else like it

My nostalgia is probably too strong at this point but I like how it felt like there remained SOME charm to the characters even as the tone shifted. Like....I guess I enjoy that there's a clear good/evil dichotomy? I like that Torn is an edgelord but very much a good guy? Again there's no escaping that it's so far removed from the first game so I wouldn't try to turn Penny on it. It's also a shame that the shitty vignette compilation that was the Jak 3 movie didn't show off the environments of the wastelands. Spargus is beachside and it brings back the sun and some colors and it's a neat looking city. The scale of the driving segments on the god damn PS2 also need to be witnessed to be appreciated.

It's actually kind funny, because Seem actually tells Daxter "Thank you for letting me see the face of my creators" at some point (i'm so sorry i can't find the time stamps) which entirely would spoil the plot twist, except most likely it's not a line you pay attention to, and if you do you're only like "what the fuck" until the reveal happens She also says that Daxter "Bears the colours of the precursors" when Jak first meets her, so there's been hints through the gone, which just makes it all the better that Penny did not expect it
@bigbadgammagnome2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it seems like a well set up plot twist. I'm a sucker for twists that have (at least) one extremely clear hint but you don't get it at the time, either because you're distracted or it's a throwaway line. It creates replayability in the sense that you'll watch it back and be like "how did I miss that??" And if you DO catch it, you can wait in anticipation to see if you're right and get the validation of being correct at the reveal. More media should risk the possibility of the audience guessing the twist because I think people will appreciate a set up twist over subverting expectations just for a cheap reveal any day.

I don't like anything about it, it turns out. I uh, tried it after this, I really, don't like it. There's cool story moments though. Spoilers, I guess, if literally anybody cares. Okay but it actually was kind of twist there in Jak 3 because I was assuming Damas was aware that Jak was really his son the whole time but no he just doesn't know it! I thought he was just doing a really really bad job at hiding it from him but no he just really thinks it's all a coincidence!

Also like many said that jak 3 cutscene compilation makes everything confusing , a lot of the dialogue and context is given outside of cutscenes with voicelines but the plot does inded makes a lot of needless trip betwen haven city and Spargus . Also jak X has a killer soundtrack

I'll be honest, you are partially right about Jak 2 and 3 love being nostalgia. For me personally, I have very little positive things to say about Jak 2 and I can definitely admit that my love for Jak 2 in particular is mostly nostalgia. In fact, I had actually a few months ago went and replayed these games and I made the conscious decision to outright skip Jak 2. Jak 3 however, I genuinely think that Jak 3 is a good game. It's not a flawless one by any means and I will absolutely play Jak 1 over it any day, but there is so much about Jak 2 that Jak 3 fixes. Even if the story is a little bit more disjointed or hard to follow, playing it is actually incredibly fun and honestly I could even make some comparisons to Ratchet and Clank with some of the weapons it gives you this time around. Plus, the presentation for 3 is definitely a step above 2. One thing to note in particular is that the soundtrack was a proper composition with streamed audio instead of using the PS2's midi system. Granted that does prevent them from making the soundtrack dynamic, but then again that was the last straw for you in Jak 2 so it evens out :)

Penny, you do realize that Daxter is supposed to be an unlikable asshole, right? There is a reason no one takes him seriously. I say this mostly because you and especially commenters treat Jak 2 as having some kind of "early 2000s misogyny" when really, that whole era of writing would not bother writing Daxter, it would treat these things as the norm rather than the ramblings of a guy the game beats on and makes fun of consistently. Wonder why anyone you are actually supposed to respect never acts like this? Simple, cause it's Daxter being a prick, the character Andy Gavin (iirc) said was the hero you don't wanna be. Not exactly a role model. Like, I don't wanna throw out "media illiteracy" here but you're making it a bit hard. I mean I'm not gonna pretend it's some progressive masterpiece, but I'd argue it's honestly more than what some other series did and still do. Hell, Seem's gender ambiguous in 2004, for a supposedly canonical female character. That's basically the exact opposite of what you'd expect from a game supposedly enabling misogyny.

Dude I was not saying the game is inherently disjointed, I was saying that since the game’s structure tends to obviously delivers more information in between cutscenes that it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the compilation’s fault you don’t get every single bit of context. It does what it says on the tin, it compiles cutscenes, it’s not at fault for doing so. It’s just the nature of the game. A lot of games have that problem, and that doesn’t make them bad games nor does it make compilations bad.
