@@aaronnewman7573 I'd say it's much more frequent than one in a billion, because it's something that can be practiced, just not many known artists practice that, mostly by choice, because they don't really know how they would use that (rightly so, it's mostly a way to show off, and jazz/scat offers the freedom to do that), or possibly because they don't know about it. The basics of this is she uses her tongue to isolate overtones (basically creating resonance cavities in her mouth). That's one way how Tuvan "throat singers" create the whistle tone in their polyphonic music. They have other techniques, but this is one of them. All in all it's not all that hard to do provided one knows what they're looking for as far as physics/mechanics of singing go. To push the principle to the absolute extreme, when we sing a note, and form a vowel (let's say 'o') instead of another (let's say 'i'), it is the same thing as what she's doing. If you try it you will eventually hear it, you will have the note you're singing, then if singing an 'o', you will ALSO have an octave above, or maybe octave+fifth, and if you sing an 'i', you'll have a note that is much higher, but each time, you are producing two notes at once. Also check out Alex Glenfield 's videos about it, he's studied Tuvan "throat singing" and also explains it pretty well. He also covers the Tuvan techniques to have that Mongol sound on the fundamental. Of course Hathaway is doing it masterfully and it's extremely impressive, especially formulated like that, "harmonizing with oneself".

@@tisa7997 That's not thoat singing. Tuvan throat singing creates overtones using your mouth and lips to resonate. What Lalah does is called Polyphonic singing, which is done enterily by her voice, and it is a perfect balance between your Head voice and Chest voice. That creates an entire chord from 2 to 4 notes

It's not throat singing. Tuvan throat singing uses overtones. This is true polyphony- she's actually singing two notes at once by stressing the break in between chest and head voice and manipulating vowels to alter the extra pitches.
