I love the look on your faces when you realize this is live! And not only live, but recorded after just a few days rehearsal. You should check out the behind-the-scenes video. The studio owner in the Netherlands had never heard of them either, and was amazed at the transformation over the weekend. He said that Michael League (leader, composer, bassist) came in from the airport and sat down at the piano to *start* composing immediately since most of the songs for the session hadn't been written yet and there were only a few days to put it together. He didn't even take off his backpack before getting to work! And equally amazing… the drummer who was booked for the gig had visa problems, so they called in the god-like Larnell Lewis who learned all the songs from rough demo tapes on the seven-hour flight to Europe. Echoing what others have said… you really need to break your rule of listening without visuals, because "We Like It Here" was conceived as an audio-visual work. Seeing these geniuses play will take your enjoyment and respect even higher. Next… Lingus. I really resist naming "bests"… but Corey Henry's solo in "Lingus" is certainly one of the very, very best keyboard solos I've ever heard.

I know you guys don't react to the videos, just the music . . .but, the video for Lingus is a live recording in front of an in-studio audience who were all listening on headphones direct from the mixing board. Seeing them gelling together as a band is amazing, then...Keyboard solo! At one point, the dude sitting next to the guy soloing just is so blown away, that all he can do is just start laughing. Highly recommend!

As a 70yo I never thught I´d ever find music that is totally new to me. How someone can take a kind of Nth African theme, throw in the jazz groove and fill it up with a funk rhythm ?????? how anyone can write something like that is beyond me..... Michael League is in a league of his own! In all my years Floyd has been the only band I can listen to every day without a second of boredom.... Snarky joined that original list of one a few years ago when I first heard them. Brilliant musicians all, but must make a special mention of Larnell Lewis :) His kit becomes like a one man orchestra that runs round the band supporting all these amazing muzos as each piece they play unfolds...brilliant!

Just wow, what a fantastic discovery. I'd heard the name before but always assumed with a name like that they must be a thrash or punk band. The trumpet was like fusion era Miles and then they funk it up in the second half and it's like the vintage Tower Of Power horn section. The other comments are right as well. You really need to break your rule and watch this live as I just did. Also Lingus which has an amazing keyboard solo. Haven't heard fusion keyboards like it since Jan Hammer. What an incredible bunch of musicians.

What’s really awesome about this album is that it was recorded live, and the drummer Larnel Lewis had never played these songs before and learned them on his plane flight over to the studio and recorded them the same day. He’s and absolute beast of a drummer.
@buddystewart2020
@buddystewart2020 2 жыл бұрын
He had played two of the tracks with the band before, the rest he learned. He already knew Lingus and What About Me. You are correct that he's a beast of a drummer though. I like the drumeo video where he listens to a track twice and write a drum part in his head then records it. He's a serious player.

Definitely watch the videos if you do any more of their tunes... they recorded this album and "Ground Up" in front an audience to get that "live" feel. While you're checking out the rest of the album, give a listen to "Quarter Master" from an earlier release. Totally different vibe! Where "Shofukan" has kind of an exotic, ethereal feel (dig that unresolved note at the end), "Quarter Master" is FUN. "Even Us" has a darker, spiritual feel to it; and "Embossed" has a kind of a desperate urgency going. Good stuff from a great band.

Snarky Puppy are amazing musicians. Have not heard anything I didn’t like on any of their albums. Check them all out. Check out the videos showing the live recording. They wrote and learned all the parts and recorded it all in under a week. Yep - No sheet music! The part you thought was base at around 10:10 is a synth. It’s recorded live - in studio, with very small audience all sitting with the band.

One note about the "live recording (but in a recording studio?)" - Snarky did this for three albums (Tell Your Friends (2009), Ground Up (2011), and this one We Like it Here (2013/4?). They basically book 3 or 4 nights for the live recordings, do 2 sets a night (with audience), so they get the best of both worlds. The technology of the studio means they can capture all the audio really well (and mix it later), but it's all live takes, no editing - but they do 6 or 8 takes of every tune, so they can pick the best one for the record / video. Very cool idea. Their last 2 albums (Culcha Vulcha and Immigrance) were done in a more normal studio environment, but SP is supposed to be recording their next album live w audience again (in Dallas in March, and I managed to score tix for one of the sessions, woo hoo!)

Welcome to the excellence of Snarky Puppy. Every song on this album is a revelation and grips you from within. This whole album was recorded live in a big studio the Netherlands and they filmed everything as well and released it on dvd/bluray. It's a big band with many guest musicians. I really hope you react to "Lingus" and "What about me" as well. :) You are still Lingus virgins. After I listened to Lingus the first time I felt something change inside. My bar for really good and extremely well composed and put together music was raised another two notches with Lingus. It's made me slightly more discerning ever since.

There have been several times where people have suggested things to me in the past where I have thought to myself no way can that be worthwhile. I remember a friend telling me you have to checkout this group Porcupine Tree. I totally dusted it because no way can a band calling themselves Porcupine Tree be any good right? Fast foward to one night I was surfing KZfaq and I stumbled onto PT's Lazarus video. That led me to watching their 2005 DVD of a Chicago concert and PT becoming one of my favorite bands ever. Years ago I was told that I needed to watch a show called Peaky Blinders. Again in my stupidity I thought a show called Peaky Blinders has to suck right? Well after two other people told me to checkout this show I gave in and found out what I was missing. Fast foward to today and I must say I didn't have a lot of confidence that I would be singing the praises of a group called Snarky Puppy but this was a really good song and like you two I was shocked to discover that this was a live track. I had always been told to not judge a book by its cover but thank you two for once again proving this to me. NicknLex strike again.

I try not to judge a band by the name because…after all, there have been many VERY weird names of bands over the decades. Have you checked out Pineapple Thief? But yeah, Snarky Puppy sounds like a punk band to me…or alternative. Not this jazz, funk, Middle Eastern fusion. Very cool.

I better NOT tell you about . . . Spock's Beard* Pineapple Thief* Panzerballett Sleepytime Gorilla Museum Buckethead Strapping Young Lad (Devin Townsend's 1st band) Toehider Edguy Beer For Dolphins (Mike Keneally's side band) Office of Strategic Influence (OSI) Umphrey's McGee The String Cheese Incident (both UM and TSCI have played with Snarky Puppy) The Jelly Jam Behold... The Arctopus Casualties of Cool (another Devin Townsend side band) Bigelf Anti-Depressive Delivery (ADD) Attention Deficit (N&L have reacted to these*) . . . I'm sure I'm forgetting more. Various types of music from bands that I actually listen to 🙃. Never heard of "Peaky Blinders" though, I'll have to take a listen! There are a LOT of contemporary bands with odd or stupid names, but haven't listened to them or have, and sound ridiculous 😆. Edit: Is it "Peaky Blinders Duo"? Because apparently there is a TV series called "Peaky Blinders".

Also, if you will see them live, you should know that Snarky Puppy is a collective of musicians. So you never know who will be there. You will hear the same pieces, but they will be totally different. Solo parts are sometimes decided as they are performing by a nod from Michael League. In a lot of situations they do not have a playlist, but decide as they go. I've read that each of them have to learn all parts. All of which makes it more fun. Some concerts they record live, master it overnight, and it will be available (for sale) the next day. I've been a Snarky Puppy addict for years now. What got me hooked around 2011, I think, is a piece called Skate U.

It’s a studio album that was recorded live - in front of a live studio audience. And now that you know that you should react to the live videos of that album. It’s completely mind blowing. Every song features a new soloist and they’re all amazing. Any song you pick is a good one. But “What About Me?”, “Lingus”, “Outlier”, “Jambone”, “Sleeper” and “Tio Macacao” are my favorites.

If you like this, you're going to really enjoy Lingus, from the same sessions. But please, watch the video for that one, as others are also suggesting! Too bad you're not reacting to the video, which shows them at the session in the studio performing this with a live crowd sitting around the studio. Everybody in there with headphones on. This whole session was done that way. You should really check out at least two additional tracks from this same session, Lingus (with one of the best synth solos on it by Corey) and What About Me, with Larnell Lewis killing it on the drums. You shouldn't have any problems with copyright on these videos, there's a lot of reactions to them out there.

Michael League is the leader of the band (bass). He wrote a suite of music, SYLVA, and they recorded it with the Metropole Orkest. Probably The Curtain is the most heard piece. It is certainly worth a reaction. You will be moved again.

Great selection. You must see them on video. As sexy wonderful funky as this performance is you must (even if not on air) listen to 'Lingus'. It has one of the best solos ever played, by Cory Henry on keys. There are several others of note. Lalah Hathaway (daughter of Donnie) sings with them (think Grammy). In another, Jacob Collier is a soloist. This band is phenomenal, as you have noted. ps This is a studio live recording, as are most of theirs. Watch!

Really cool tune from a band whose name I have seen around for years but haven’t had the inspiration to look them up. I didn’t know Larnell Lewis was in this band. I haven’t looked up all your reaction videos but I’m going to suggest a local band who I don’t think anyone has reacted to yet. Please check out ‘Crack The Sky’ and their song Nuclear Apathy. Their 1975 debut album was Rolling Stone debut album of the year. You certainly won’t be disappointed.

Great to see you reacting to this, it's clear you both love great music. I understand you don't normally do video reactions but if you were ever going to break that rule, Snarky Puppy and this album is for sure the one you would probably want to bend those rules for. I do understand that watching a music video can detract from the musical experience but in this instance you will be watching and hearing the live studio session of the musicians playing their crafts and not some music video you would expect to see on MTV. You'll probably want to at the least look into it, going from how other reactors have used the videos from this album I suspect there would probably not by any copyright issues to consider plus you'll still be hearing the studio version of these musical pieces even if you wanted to close you eyes and simply hear the music.

So these guys are reminding me of: Umphrey's McGee The String Cheese Incident Whom I've only heard a few tracks. These were some of the bands that were mentioned from your "Grateful Dead" Reaction. I _think_ I've heard a couple of tracks from Snarky, but this was REALLY good! - Jelly Jam (formerly "Platypus", with Derek Sherinian on keys, John Myung on bass of Dream Theater, Rod Morgenstein of Dixie Dregs and Winger on drums, and guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor of Kings X) - Panzeballett (from Munich Germany) Would be the "Progressive Rock/Prog Metal" versions of these "Jam Bands", which you guys may like as well :).

WOW, how does someone in the US know Panzerballett ? They've done so much crazy but great stuff. I have a record called "Hart genossen - von Abba bis Zappa" and in between they "cover" songs of Klaus Doldinger, Rammstein, and the ESC winner for Germany, Nicole's Ein bisschen Frieden. In you tube you find 2 songs, that were reacted to, the newer typewriter and the Simpsons - do you know their version ? Ok, what shall we request ? :-)

This is only the 2nd song I've heard by them, and it makes me wonder why. The horns here remind me of the beautiful "Prince Rupert Awakes" (Lizard), which starts out with Jon Anderson singing for the King of Crimson, before the radical unleash of horns. And speaking of which. I have or had every single discernible record or tape or CD that you have on display...from the time of their release...so it doesn't surprise me that y'all would also love this original and energetic wonder band.
