So here in the midst of July 2020, and a summer full of suck (no live shows, no parties), we are hit with the loss of one of the most amazing frontmen in punk rock - Ken Chinn (Mr. Chi Pig). Thank you, sir, for the music, the memories, and the laughter. Bye, bye, bye.
And to those in the afterlife (or the ship that arrived to take him back) - I hope you poor bastards are ready for the Puffed Wheat showers, and the high-velocity raw hotdogs delivered via tennis racquet! You have been warned.
Growing up in Calgary and Edmonton, I saw this band numerous times. The very first show I saw was at Ten Foot Henry’s (Calgary, early 1985) and prior to the release of their first album. The only song I really knew was Victim’s of the Womanizer from the classic BYO compilation Something to Believe in -and they truly were.
On Thursday, July 16th, 2020, when I caught the news of Ken’s passing, I dug through several boxes of cassette tapes to find this treasure. Earlier this year, during an SNFU binge, I also managed to find the original gig-poster from this show that I had buried away. For years I had been thinking of putting these together, cleaning them up, and sharing them with friends and fans - young, old, and those to come.
Perhaps it can also offer a THANK YOU that I never got to say to the guys (Marc, Brent, Curtis, Ted - heard here at the height of their superpowers. I also extend thanks to all the other members who contributed to the legacy. As fans, we had no idea how lucky we were as these performances were going off right in front of us. What a way to grow up.
Hopefully, the sharing of this performance brings back memories, energy, a crack in our voices as we sing along, and very likely a tear or two - out of sadness, out of madness, out of happiness.
Enjoy!
