There needs to be a conversation focused on men regarding how they are not brought to understand consent and how consent is not absolute or a contract i.e. if one agrees to foreplay, it does not mean they are ready for intercourse. Every allegation does not need to be as serious as rape for us to have this conversation.

There are implications to turning an awkward situation into an obvious conflict. These implications become heavier when there is also a tilted power dynamic in play. Which is why it is important that men understand the difference between an aggressive advance and asking for consent. The case with Aziz Ansari reflects poorly on an entire generation of people and how we've failed to educate our boys on what consent looks like. A woman shouldn't have to shout out a no with her heels in her hand for a man to get the point.

Leena Krithan I get what you're saying, its not that I don't. Ideally everyone should be aware of the other persons feelings and not only in the sexual context. My points are 1) some people , or id say most people aren't really that empathetic all the time. I am talking about honest mistakes. Like when you keep on blabbering even while the other person is clearly bored. It would help if the person mentioned that in a decreasing order of subtlety. 2)ideally men should be able to heed the cues the woman is sending out, at the same time.. women should also understand that saying things out loud makes things clear. While raising everyone to be empathetic would lead to a better world, I'd also wanna raise my daughter to speak up for herself. Won't work on rapists and all, but wherever there is genuine lack of communication.. what are YOU doing to rectify the situation? At what point do I relinquish all responsibility for what happens to me? 3) this stand assumes all women to be demur infants. I'd think that's offensive to women. Women can and should speak up.. with varying levels of subtlety to ask for what they want or to resist what they don't want. Let's look at the alternatives 1)any woman can always turn around and accuse a man of mild assault or whatever.. cos whi knows what signals she was sending out. This would then require explicit contracts before even kissing.. I belive there are apps for that now.. thats just sad that people have come so far in their distrust that they need a signed contract for something so basic and intimate. 2) where does this end? At what point do you ask a woman to show some sign of not adhering to this gender role and become a responsible adult. If I was conned , surely some responsibility lies with me, of being naiive ?
