Before getting an AES (and a multi-cart) I used my CD2 more than you'd expect. Especially since it has no copy protection and i added a language switch to mine so I can flip back and forth between JP and EN. Now i dont use it much at all since getting the AES as well as the various other Neo units like the mini and the arcade stick which both can be hacked to play everything. But for its time it was something to behold. And one that many of my friends were jealous of.

If so, would you be interested on doing one regarding "Magician Lord" for the Neo-Geo. Such a timeless classic this very challenging game is. It also happens to be the game that introduced me to the Neo-Geo 32 years ago in 1990 and made me a buff even since. 8^) Anthony..

The reason why the cdz overheats is beacuse the vents at the bottom are blocked by the RF shield, so if you want to avoid that problem you need to take appart the console and remove it.

Front was preorder up to serial 30k. It wasn't discontinued due to faults as you said. Top loader was simply cheaper to make. It's nice that you have all 3 variants. I had the 2x version but the pivot that holds the inner ring of the cd broke so I sold it along with my games. I only bought games that have limited loading like metal slug, shooters, puzzle. I bought the big games for mvs. It would have been better to double the systems ram to 12 Meg or so.

definitely a cool little unit! shame it didn't get the chance to take off more here in the states, I'm sure $50 CDs would have probably done better than the $300 carts! apparently a few of these NGCD games have additional extras over the cart versions as well, like Neo Turf Masters apparently has a whole extra super challenging course? so I could definitely see them banking on 'stuff not found in the AES/MVS version of the game' as a nice extra. even if it's just something little like a re-arranged version of the soundtrack.

To this day, I wonder what the target audience of the Neo Geo AES actually was. Like you, my friends and I were all completely aware that the AES existed growing up. For some reason, the Babbage's at my local mall even sold the console and a few games (at around $200 each) for many years. And yeah, it was the Rolls-Royce of consoles. We would gawk at that console every time we passed by Babbage's, talking about how we'd buy it if our parents ever won the lottery. I did have some friends whose family had a lot of money, and even they couldn't convince their parents to get them one. Not only did I never know anyone who owned one, I never knew anyone who even claimed they knew someone who owned one. Crazy that the console apparently sold well over 1 million units. Back in the 90's, there really wasn't many adults into gaming enough to purchase an AES, so my best guess is the market was mostly *super* wealthy parents who could afford to buy their kids one. Seems like there are far more Japanese consoles and games in existence than English version, so I assume the market skewed towards wealthy Japanese parents.

It was always primary Japan in times where arcade culture was especially strong, SNK franchises were very popular and adults who actively played games and had ample disposable income were plentiful. Secondary, niche markets in other countries. I reckon spoiled children from anywhere made up a minute fraction of the units sold.

I think you're right, had the CDZ come in 94 in NA, you may have seen it do really well, I mean I know I was obsessed with Neo Geo as a kid, loved the arcade games and a lot of my friends knew about them as well. With the right cost, it could have carved out a nice little slice in the market. Plus it would have had a nice little lead on the PS1 and Saturn. Maybe they would have received good support from third parties. Imagine if Konami had made games for it? It could have blown minds!

I have a NeoGeo cd top loading with something like 80 games and playing on it has always been 1 a pleasure but 2 a real pain due to loading times you are totally right. Now there is a solution about this aside from buying a cd Z which will increase the pleasure even more (and cd Z are harder and harder to get nowadays). There is a modified version of the NeoGeo top loading where the cd drive is replaced (or sometimes cohabiting depending on the version of the modification board) with an sd card slot. Add a 64GB sd card to store all NeoGeo cd games and then a miracle happens... you get a NeoGeo cd with the equivalent of a 4x cd drive no kidding. The games remain 100% the same afterwards except ALL loading times are reduce x4 compared to the NeoGeo top loading and x2 compared to the NeoGeo cd Z. This is called the NeoGeo sd loader, it costs less than $100 but needs some setup (tutorials available on KZfaq). I was even able to buy one directly ready to go from a special store. It's definitely worth it.

Adam I'd like for you to test this theory with the Original NEOGEOCD Model: Boot up the system, walk into the kitchen, make a small grilled cheese sandwich & then, after eating the delicious grilled chese sandwich, go back to the NEOGEOCD to see if the damn thing is STILL loading.

Eh, it's not quite THAT long...the grilling is where it gets you. The rest is probably possible.

Eh, no. Too much time to spread. If you slapped some turkey and cheese on though, that's probably doable.

I was actually shocked you had a CDZ and thought you had barrowed it till you told the incredibly lucky story of it's acquisition. Not saying I think you seem remotely poor, just you do seem pretty adverse to lighting a pile of cash on fire to get something super desirable just because it's rare.

Isn't the CD drive in the CDZ still a 1x drive but with more cache? I had the luck to test it at the time and, even if much better than the regular CD model it was still a pain in many games... I remember we compared KOF 95 with the Saturn version and there was still too much difference in loading times were the Saturn version was almost instantaneous without much if any difference in animation frames... Unfortunately the Neo Geo CD was a really bad designed console, made like they never really tested. It was too expensive, too slow and a bad idea from every prospect because the Neo Geo games released after this were so much big in ROM size that the quantity of RAM mounted on the NGCD wasn't enough for arcade perfect conversions...

Finally eh, also i'd say the front loader is more rare than the cdz. The cdz is just over priced.
