A big part of the reason why all of the sketches are cut up is because of copyright issues. Any clip more than 30 seconds is liable for copyright strike and will take down the video. I personally like to scatter the clips because I like to make them as out of context as possible. It makes it funnier in my opinion though I know not everyone thinks like me.

As much as I love SNL let's face it, out of every 4 minute sketch there is about 3 minutes of filler and one of gold, these just cut the wheat from the chaff.

my theory is that a lot of problems with sketches come from having to spend a lot of time building context before getting to the point? sometimes on snl they’ll remedy this by moving the funny character from a sketch that didn’t work to weekend update(like stefon), doing essentially the same thing as these clips- removing fat to get to the meat. ideally sketches are written well enough that watching them in full adds to the experience and has payoff, but that’s more rare from snl unless it’s been worked on for longer than the few days they get. the growing brevity of gen z’s (and internet users in general) attention spans means we’re already tuned into quickly absorbing context from visual cues like costuming, set, or even just the style of filming, and context taken from within the joke’s setup or even the joke itself. we’ve been training for snl compilations since vine
