The "airless" snow gun, is not airless at all, there's a compressor under the main cone. Fan blows out the the water, already mixed with water. There are different sets of nozzles, of which some are called "nucleators", which mix air and water and create so-called nucleation core, which creates a solid base for a snowflake formation. In fact, there've never been working "airless" snowguns, because it's impossible. There were some models using venturi effect, but again, it needed certain amount of air to be pulled into water nozzle in order to make it freeze. During the air expansion, the air temperature falls down to -30 or less (depending on the air pressure), that's why the compressed air is mandatory in snowmaking.

Thank you for correctly stating how a fan gun works. But the smi 320s were airless guns. Very neat concept of water freezing on the fan blades & shearing off.

Cool video. Check your facts. You have most of it. It comes down to two different styles of guns. Internal nucleation and external nucleation. The closet thing to an air less gun is snow logic, and hkd vipers. They operate on as little as 5 psi. The SMI pole cat fan gun in your video that you refer to as air less is in fact very different. They operate with a water source that is mountain provided and have a on board compressor that generates the air necessary for the nucleation process. Snow making companies around the globe strive to reach as low of a PSI that can pump through the machines to create snow as air is the most expensive component. No air less guns on the market as of now being march of 2016. Thank you and god bless snow makers world wide. More then happy to go further in depth.

+bosh boy Well said, actually, there is one producer on the market called Nivis, they use a special nozzle with a tiny chimney, using the venturi effect to mix the water with surrounding air. This seems working, however the snow production is aroud half the volume of a standard on-board compressor equipped snowgun.

Joel I study ski area operations in Leadville Colorado, and interestingly enough we have a truly airless and powerless gun. its called the York water stick. it is old and inefficient and the snow quality sucks and requires a temp of 14 degrees or lower. I also make snow for Keystone Resort and in speaking with my controller i have learned that our HKD tower guns will also make snow with only water (no air) in 9 degree or lower temps. all temps are wet bulb measurements.

@ftwcm - You have an eagle eye! Yes, the fan gun that we used in the video does use compressed air, though we wanted to use that gun because it looks similar to an airless gun and we didn't have easy access to a true airless gun. About the expansion of the compressed air, that works in tandem with evaporational cooling to chill the air, but I didn't want to lump too many concepts into one video. Thanks for your comment! JOEL

not true... both guns require compressed air and water. the fan gun has an on-board compressor- the center nozzle is air + water and the rings of nozzles are just water, the fan is just for throw/ hang time

If you use a wide fan spray power washer nozzle on the end of your air water gun & wet bulb is 24 or colder with a water & air psi of at least 60psi you can make snow. Best is air at 80psi & water 0ver 100psi. Using a power washer & air compressor will allow you to go as crazy as you want.

+association330 real snow is the same as snow they make.... unless you live in a warm climate some snowmaking systems push "snowmax" into the water to help the snow form before it lands.
@LukeSnowmaker
@LukeSnowmaker 8 жыл бұрын
+ore knot It's called "SNOMAX" formerly developed by York and these bacteria-based additives are not intended to push the freezing level higher, but to increase the quality of snow where the climate conditions are wet therefore producing sticky snow and to form a proper nucleation core where the water is too pure, having problems to freeze.
