Trains battle heavy snow at Skykomish, Washington on the west side of Stevens Pass. Amtrak's Empire Builder limps into town after being stranded for several hours by a winter storm. Our film crew narrowly escapes a falling tree.
These scenes are from our DVD "Winter on Stevens Pass" which is available on DVD, Blu-ray and in 4K with Vimeo on Demand.

While My memories of that area only go back to the mid-'70s. I can recall the huge power station, left from when the line was electrified over the pass to Wenatchee. And the three engine helper units idling away while waiting to boost the next eastbound over the pass, listening to the engine crews killing time over coffee in the Skykomish hotel. I hopped a few freights over to Wenatchee and back (and longer) just for the fun of it. This video reminds me of the massive snowfall in1910 that caused the Wellington avalanche

My wife came by as I was watching this fabulous video. She watched for a few minutes and said, "Are they nuts?" I get that some people may consider our hobby, and the lengths we go to enjoy it, to be a little outside the norm. OUTSIDE being the operative word here. Well done! The sacrifice of your comfort for the enjoyment of many is much appreciated! The Washington Travel Bureau wasn't out, but you more than made up for it!

As a railway employee in Australia I really enjoy watching US trains and these extremely high quality productions. The weather conditions there are atrocious to work in obviously but it does make for great viewing. Edit: watching those 3 BNSF locos run past reminded me of that movie “Runaway Train” with Jon Voigt and Eric Roberts 🤓

As a kid I worked as a Gandydancer (track laborer)and fire and slide patrolman for the great Northern Railway in the 1960s. It was wonderful to hear the references to East switch Skykomish or west switch scenic. It took me back to those places and those times. I loved the railroad and being around The trains and the equipment and the hard-working men.

Really cool. Love those trains. About 30 years ago I was skiing at Sugar Bowl mtn in Lake Tahoe and the gondola took you right over the train tracks. I was lucky enough to be on the gondola right as one of those trains with the huge snow blower in front went right underneath us. So amazing. I wish I had a phone way back then.

I watched a lot of this unfold live on the Virtual Railfan cam in Skykomish. I'm glad this snow event was documented, and I found myself thinking back to the winter of 1910 when the two trains were trapped for six days up at the top of the old Stevens Pass high line, as in the Wellington Avalanche.

Growing up around OR/WA, I always figured the Cascades were pretty mild for weather treachery compared to the big scary Rockies of Montana. Now that I'm a regional truck driver in this area, I can say I'll take Montana almost every time. There are a lot of routes between Seattle and Yakima, and all of them get GNARLY snow. Montana may be colder, but the Cascades are cold enough to turn the water crispy, and they get SO MUCH more water. I just looked it up as a sanity check - Snoqualmie Pass gets slighly less snowfall than DONNER, but Stevens Pass actually bears Donner on average. Good Lord. By the way, little-known fact. Snoqualmie Pass is named for an old Native American word meaning "tire chains required".

I and my then young family lived in Baring on the siding across State Route 2 from the Baring Store in the late 80's. My kids went to school in Skykomish. I organized a model train exhibition during the annual Skykomish Celebration I can't remember the name of the event in 1988 I believe. Beautiful area. Got to see The Portland Rose up close and personal.

I should note that the movie Harry and the Henderson's had segments filmed there at the old Quonset hut near the turn off to Index and around Index. I had to wait in traffic while they were filming a segment. Actors Don Ameche and John Lithgow were there. That was about a Sasquatch " Harry" and the family the Henderson. Great family movie.

I am a regular visitor to Virtual Railfan's Railcam in Skykomish. It's affixed to the Cascadia Inn there. I went to the site on KZfaq several times a day during the heavy snows of January 2022 to follow the drama taking place in that beautiful little town. This excellent video considerably amplifies and adds context to what we all saw happening in Skykomish. Very well done, 7idea Productions!

Wow, a real life drama, wrapped in a beautiful setting. Fabulous catch, and immortal efforts! Between all the laughs and smirks, you were at several risks, along with all them poor folk, stuck up there. It may not seem as intense as a hurricane, or as devastating as a forest fire, still, aunt Mara does not have mercy on those, who take her appearance lightly. It may not be heroic, but surely was daredevil, to get all that footage.

Much of the town of Skykomish was lifted up and the soil under it removed and replaced, it was contaminated with Diesel and Bunker C fuel oil from spills and leaking tanks when Skykomish was a fueling station and maintenance facility for 80 years. When I had left the project they had recovered just over 130,000 gal of fuel so far, 38,000 gal of Bunker C fuel recovered was clean enough that it was tanked and hauled down to Everett and burned in the boilers at Kimberly Clark paper mill. It cost BNSF roughly 100 million in cleanup and they have to continue constant monitoring

At 11 min in there is a mention of the switch heaters not working due to power outages. For anyone that has ever traveled on the Eastern corridors you will often notice the track are on fire, that is a safety measure that is common so they do not have to count on the switches working. The rail lines will often go out and set fire to the rails and areas close by to keep the switches clear of ice and snow. It is far cheaper to replace a burned tie than to hold an entire freight

As always, THANK YOU for your AWESOME professional videography combined with your professional quality voice narration. You must either be in radio or television production with that type of excellent voice. Skykomish is one of the very few places I consider as wonderful and day dream often about returning to for a visit. Lotsnof history here. I beleive it was where GN electrification started before going thru the Cascade Tunnel west of there.

Thank you for your kind words. Got into radio in the early 90's. When I started making videos I did the narration as well since it is a lot cheaper than hiring "professional" voice talent. Yes lots of history from Skykomish to the old and new Cascade Tunnel. The tragic Wellington Avalanche of 1910 wiped two trains off the mountain.

If not for getting stranded on the Amtrak train it must be something to be riding along in a snowstorm. As dangerous as it is while driving my tractor trailer in the snow I never really had a problem while on the interstates until the last ten years where the people in cars congesting the highways really took the enjoyment out of it. All you need to do is to slow down and enjoy the ride

I have to admit this is the best channel for RR information. The narration is perfect! I find myself trying to locate the areas you're talking about. I live in M.N. and I am not familiar with these areas. I then pause the video and try to find any maps that you're talking about. I don't know how difficult it would be when you are editing, but if you could do an overlay, a simple map of the area that would be much appreciated. Great work and thanks for what do.
