Snowblower Tune-Up: Get Ready for Winter

This video from Sears PartsDirect will show you what to do to get your snowblower ready for the first big snow storm of the season. You’ll need to do things like lubricate the auger shaft, the auger control and drive control. You’ll also want to grease your tire axels and check your tire pressure. New to having a snowblower. Should I do this after the season?!? Minus replacing the spark plugs and filling the oil and gas, that I would do before the start of the new season

Yes. Performing the tune up after the season except for replacing the plugs, replacing the oil and filling the gas tank would help keep the snowblower in top condition.

How do I determine the model number? I bought mine used and don't have the owners manual for specific details. You have at least two different color blowers in this video. I have the red one with a 26" auger. Or are all the parts the same for different models? Like the belts, spark plug, ....

You’ll likely find the model number sticker on the back of the lower frame cover. For the snowblower that we used in this video, you can see the model number sticker on the lower frame cover at 1:30 in the video. Craftsman snowblower model number often start with 917 or 247. Once you find the model number, you can search for the owner’s manual and repair parts on our website using that number: www.searspartsdirect.com/ You’ll typically find engine parts listed in a separate category on the parts diagram page for your model. If you don’t see a section for engine parts, let us know the model number of your snowblower and we’ll give you a link for the engine parts diagram on our website. Parts for snowblowers differ by model so you’ll need to use the model number of your snowblower to access the correct parts list diagram and order parts.

We don't have a KZfaq video that shows how to complete that repair. On a Craftsman 24-inch/5hp snowblower, you'll need to remove the auger housing and then remove the auger shaft bearing housings from the sides of auger housing so you can pull the differential gearbox out and separate the gearbox housing to repair internal differential gears. Use the parts diagram for your snowblower as a guide when completing this repair. The procedure varies depending on the model of your snowblower. This is a somewhat complicated repair so let us know if you need specific advice on how to complete the repair. Include your model number in your request for additional advice so we can see the type of Craftsman snowblower that you're working on.

Most brands of snowblowers, including Sears/Craftsman, don’t have air cleaners because the flying snow would clog the filter.

Great tutorial, but gas goes bad within 30 days, with stabilizer it stays fresh for about 6 months depends on brand.

Are you sure? I used a couple gallons of gas in my lawnmower all summer that I bought last January. The fuel stabilizer has kept it going.

your video wants people to use silicone lubricant and you show someone using wd40 brand silicone but in the links you show a link for silicone lube from sears for snowblower and it just takes you to a regular can of wd 40 oil not silicone spray

Looks like I basically have to spend 10 straight hours doing this yearly! If I would have known that, I would have never bought this thing! It's either do it yourself or spend $200 a year on maintance! not worth it!
