My first season as a content creator has put me in touch with many, many different snowboarders from all over the globe. The comments paint a clear picture: people want to be provided with knowledge to make good gear decisions and to improve their riding, and they appreciate it! Older riders are somewhat ignored by the snowboarding industry, whose language and advertising approach is still banking on hype and the 'cool factor' of any given product.
This is my season recap in regards to this channel and a few thoughts on the state of snowboarding as a whole.

Lars! I've said it before and saying it again: You have created the best snowboarding channel across all platforms, and the info you put out there is bar none the best, most useful, and caters to all ages and types of riders in the snowboarding community. Keep doing what you're doing, bud! Your work is very much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment! The thing is that it's all there! They just don't talk about it.... They don't do anything to 'invite you in'. From the outside it looks like snowboarding has one goal and one goal only, and that is tricks! Very strange! Snowboard instructors very much learn most things about how to help someone with their turns, yet there's nothing that demonstrates and promotes that. It'll change! ;-) Wait for it!

As a side note on the season. ‘97 was a dire season in Whistler and there was a series of seasons in the ‘80s where the Alps got very little snow. Seasons vary.

I am 47 years old and been snowboarding since the early 90s. I got into snowboarding as a transition from skateboarding. Back then both snowboarding and skateboarding were a culture. You didn’t just do the activities, you wore the style, listened the music, watched the videos. So much of who I am today is because of those defining things back then. Today I still find so much content I love for snowboarding. The Bombhole podcasts are incredible. There are many content creators (Tribute Lounge, Angry)that make good videos and information. I have never feared even at 47 walking into any shops. There is a lot of content out there still aimed at the culture of snowboarding. It feels like you are calling out the difference between snowboarders and people that snowboard. The type of people who prefer to watch Natural Selection vs the Olympics. We need to make it accessible for new people and older people to get into the sport, but there also needs to be acknowledgment that there are two different audiences and the industry targets one and that is not based on age and doesn’t need to grow up. You are just making content targeted for an audience that has not traditionally been at the core of snowboarding. Clearly there is a need for this content and that is positive but doesn’t mean what the industry, and content creators are doing is wrong or needs to grow up. Just different audiences based on if they look at snowboarding as a sport or a culture.

Thanks for that comment!! I really like it! I fully agree with you. We're the same age (46) with the same background. I watch Bomb Hole, too. You and I are in one way or another part of the core culture - me simply due to the fact that I've seen most of the history of the sport evolve as an active rider - I never felt that I was part f the culture all that much. I often didn't identify with what the culture dictated to be 'cool'. Anyhow, you're describing exactly what I'm saying, but from the other side! My criticism to the industry is that they make 90% of their money from the weekend warrior that is not super core but create an insider vibe where everything put out is aiming at the core... and that is exclusivity in an industry that is claiming to be all so inclusive, open and tolerant. You and I walk into a board shop with the confidence to possibly know twice as much as anybody working in the shop... Without our history and experience we'd be facing a fashion code, coolness factor code, weird lingo and a labyrinth of product that an 18 year old kid is trying to guide us through saying a lot of things without much content. This is of course not always the case, but I've seen it in action too often. I think we're somewhat saying the same thing. It all needs to exist simultaneously for the sport to really be the multifaceted thing it can be. Thanks for watching my stuff!! It's awesome to have these conversations with people like yourself!!

One comment I would make regarding the various age ranges and both the marketing and interest in the sport. I made it a point to introduce my children to snow sports at a young age and they have both thanked me since now that they're young adults and snowboard enthusiast. However, the majority of their friends do not snowboard/ski because their parents chose not to make the commitment of time, money, and patience to introduce them to the sport. The other factor IMHO is the huge increase in costs to enjoy this sport with equipment, lodging, travel, and lift ticket prices.

Just turned 60 this year. I could not agree more with your comments about age and the lack of good information for us “oldies but goodies.” Whenever I hear the word “shred” I shudder. I love a nice blue groomer with no bumps and few people. Nothing against younger people doing amazing things on their boards! More power to them. But the industry needs to realize that what you’re saying is indeed happening and that they are missing a big market.

"Dude, go shred!" Hahaha... ;-) Thanks for the comment! Yes, it's real! While at the same time beginner kids have seemingly stopped to come up, as many resorts are reporting ("snowboarding is dead" I heard an Italian board shop tell me this winter....) It's so strange! Is the industry really just thinking that snowboarding is done by advanced senders in their late teens and early twenties? I just don't get it! Seems silly!

I have had so many ah ha moments while watching your channel this season, so thank you Lars for the great content. You provided so much insight into gear design without just reading spec sheets and repeating marketing buzzwords. The industry seems to cater so heavily to the park and pow riders that there are just endless versions of the same twin or slightly directional twin shaped boards out there. I also see so many people on the mountain riding boards that are setup incorrectly with completely non functional stances or are riding boards way too small for their boot size. There is definitely a gap in knowledge out there and your channel has been so refreshing to watch as someone who would rather carve groomers than ride park. Looking forward to next season, cheers.

Lars: first let me say you are one of the very best snowboard youtubers, humble and really knowledgeable. I myself are a quite newbie snowboard hardbooter, but after 20 years of softboot riding, I appreciate all things snowboard related. One thing I would like to see is, focusing or as a primary goal of carving, if you could make a series on tips and general ideas based on terrain and conditions. Since most part of the riders have to challenge theirselves when carving with ice, slush, hardpack, steep, narrow, etcetera types of terrain, I believe it would be incredibly useful and a real legacy to snowboarding in general to have this series. How can we adapt for carving, when we should shift into power sliding, when we are more upright or race oriented, when can we press and/or lean more… as usual there are no mathematical truths, but you are a hell of a rider and once a rider got to an intermediate or upper level, those fine adjustments make all the difference and make the sport way more fun by being able to enjoy all conditions, because let’s face it: perfect mild homogenous corduroy happens very sparsely. Cheers from Barcelona!

Great comment!! Thank you very much! I will try to put out more carving content, for sure. I find part of what you're asking for is something that comes with experience.... miles in the legs.... I find it quite humbling to try to explain carving for different conditions, hahaha... I'm kind of intimidated by attacking the topic... But I'll keep this comment in mind! We'll see what I can do :-) Thanks again! L*

Thanks Lars, this season your channel became my favorite. My perception is that your communication skills are great blending humility, knowledge, experience, entertainment and a very positive and altruistic attitude. I get stoke to improve when listening to your videos, which is really needed when you are nearly 50 years old. My opinion about our community is that snowboarding is becoming old and not getting enough young blood. most of the riders I see in Sweden where I live, are over 30. The economics rule and the answers I get from shop owners in Stockholm and resort admins is that there is not enough market for snowboarding. Ski is winning more adepts and that is where the industry goes. I hope the snowboard industry reinvents itself or we will probably see fewer products offered, less quality, and the continuation of the snowboarding community being displaced by resorts (fewer parks, less snowboard friendly sidehits, less schools and lessons) and also the impossibility of getting a good snowboard boot fit.
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the very kind words!! :-) You're bringing up a great point. I have heard that in other places. Seemingly there's not enough young snowboarders! That contradicts my message in some way, but I also know that what I'm saying is also true. It's very interesting to think that both thoughts are true! I can only come up with a theory: A) Current kids have parents, who snowboard. Often kids DON'T want to do what the parents are doing once they enter the teenager years. So they switch to skiing or never even snowboard at all... * B) Parents keep sticking to the old idea of 'you gotta be able to ski first before you can snowboard!' - which I think is nonsense... Skiing for a 3-year old is clearly easier and requires less patience from a parent, but I've seen too many examples of tiny little rippers on snowboards to fully buy into this :-) * C) Skiing is easier to start with as a kid, and since skiing is now also 'cool' and contains park/freestyle, why would a kid later on switch to snowboarding?! Snowboarding comes with inconveniences, like strapping into bindings, no poles to push yourself.... Society is moving further away from any acceptance of effort for a certain gain... Everything needs to be convenient and work instantly... Skiing is easier on that end! * D) I believe that a good turn on a snowboard is something very, very special! A triple cork on skis vs. snowboard is kind of the same thing... But turning strapped onto a single plank with no poles vs. turning on skis is very different as a sensation. The 'surf factor', the 'glide factor', experiencing g-force sideways vs. face down the hill is quite the difference, and I have yet to meet someone, who - once it clicked - wasn't hooked on it on a snowboard. So maybe the true come back of snowboarding would lie in creating more stoke around the pure sensation of a good turn... :-) To me that is where the truly different experience lies between skiing and snowboarding. * E) People have simply been out priced and in general the entire winter sport industry is dying, because it is such an elitist sport these days. * Great topic! Love thinking about it. Thank you for bringing it up! :-)

Wow, just wow! IMHO, spot on!!! I started snowboarding in my late 20's early 30's (now 60). Everything was geared to the way younger crowd marketing wise (and by the way, no disrespect to the younger generations, they are all great and have my true respect). I grew up windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, and etc, thus was a gear nerd, and wanted technical details/specifications to base decisions. It was very difficult trying to find the correct information and gear when I decided to try snowboarding. The literature and sales were not to my demographic and they just didn't give you all the technical info. Your analysis of this situation really hit home!!! I dropped snowboarding after a number of years (mainly because of where I live), but hope to return sometime in the near future now that retirement is very close!

Thanks so much for this comment!!! Nail on the head! When I read certain marketing pitches, I feel like they're joking. One brand had a base material once that they called 'Sintruded' (Sintered / Extruded). Those are two different things. They may be together in one base in form of different pieces of base material, but they can't be together in the same piece of base material.... People in the brand asked what that material was, and the marketing team said "Doesn't exist! We made it up!".......... True story! The key here is not that the information is bad or nonsensical, but the 'why?'! What's the point? Why do they not allow the sport to be the technical thing it is where people benefit from understanding what they buy? When I started this channel I thought I might at some point receive emails from companies threatening me to stop this, hahaha... I figured that would be the point when I'm actually winning! ;-)

All the points you make are great. I’ve been boarding since the mid 90s and I found your channel extremely useful, especially when buying boots and bindings (I got NOW). As a suggestion I’d like an episode on viewing board, bindings, boots and setup as a system… I.e. matching all your kit for how a person intending to ride. Most reviewers talk about each piece of kit in isolation. Actually do a few episodes please on different set ups for different riding types. On the age thing, as a ‘57 year old teenager (according to my wife), there’s a lot to learn. As for the shops, they’re rarely useful. “Rad board dude” doesn’t tell me anything.

Lars; once again thanks for your insight on the industry much of what we also see on the slopes daily, which seems to be a common lack of knowledge. As for the groups we expect that with the very little ones and folkes just starting out! Our channel is also focused on educating them on equipment and how to use it whether buying or borrowing it from friends to start out learning. The largest group we deal with that is actually growing in size is between 45-80 as we are not exactly youngsters and of course the interest in this age group becomes more towards carving and speed control vice park an jibbing. So I also let them know about your channel also, all the best in the coming seasons!

Even though we are older with a pocket full of cash to spend, the young sales people always go straight to the younger customer, who most probably are just looking. 99% of the time. Thank you Lars, this is so true. Its really great that you are making technical snowboard content. I started in the late 80s and there was a time when snowboarding was diverse and had a positive healthy image. The industry then went fully down the skateboarding on snow path, with its negative and destructive vibe. The industry tried to eliminate all other types of snowboarding. For several decades turning was not cool. No wonder now, i see many on the mountain just sideslipping their way down, while i am having a ball ripping up the corduroy. People like you are needed to spread the knowledge, so people can discover again that you dont need to change to skiis to get around the mountain effectively, and with style and fun.

Best channel ever. 52 and this is my 40th season snowboarding. Thought I knew it all. Lars I can’t express how grateful I am for your insights. Also, I’ve now added 3 Stranda’s (Cheater, Descender, Makrill) to my quiver and the Now Pro bindings. This was based on my trust in you. This is the first time in my life I ever bought a board, let alone 3, without first demoing one. Now I’m a Stranda fan boy for life and Turing my friends in to them. These boards, especially the Descender, have made me fall in love with snowboarding all over again. I owe that all to you and thank you for answering my questions here to help me make those decisions. Riding that Descender makes me feel like I’m 12 years old and that feeling is priceless! Never realized I could be as in love with snowboarding as I was back in ‘86 when they finally let us use the chairlifts on Big White! If you’re ever in Bend OR (Mt Bachelor still getting dumps) look me up so I can buy you lunch! You deserve all the success in the world. Take care of that back! We need you!

@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel I ran an online snowboard magazine from 2000-2007 and did some gig work with some snowboard companies. I left the industry because all the marketing/media was aimed at 13-19 year olds and I felt I was aging out of the scene. It's interesting to me that so many of my peers are in their 40s now and were part of the 90s snowboard boom. We are much more interested in freeriding but most companies consider us a secondary audience with the freestyle crowd being the primary audience.

As a 45 yo, whose been snowboarding since the 90s, I find the sales people at my local shops pretty much worthless. I went into a local shop and the manager was trying to sell my friend a board that was way too small for her daughter. The waist width was way to narrow, toe drag would have been absurd. He got extremely frustrated when I tried to push her to a different, wider board.

Sad! When I worked at the shop I sold the most boards out of all employees for the entire 11 years I worked there - and I sent many people away when I didn't have what they needed. That approach built a customer base that truly trusted the shop's team's advice. Long term relationships are winning the game! Not all sales people understand this....

I started snowboarding winter 88' in Reno/Tahoe area.. it was great when the first resort allowed snowboarding!! Hiking was so time consuming. I left the scene when I had my daughters 2003/06 As they grew they had zero interest in snowboarding and neither did my husband. Now I'm 50y. Last year I dusted off my old gear... I had a 167 or 168cm GNU carbon fiber. I rode double black Dimonds at sugarbowl in Tahoe before moving to Las Vegas. I would love to share my experience getting back on the mountain and trying to get a new board for my riding style... love to carve +/+ I have had such a challenge talking to my local board shop and on-line experts in their 20s. Every day I went to the resort, I met someone on the lifts struggling with toe turns and carving steeps. I would give them some old school tips.. adjust their stance, and 2 runs later, they were amazed at their progression. I want to volunteer for potrol. I was an USAF medic for 8y prior to getting my nursing degree. Saturday, I took a board on a very icy black Dimond steep to rescue my friends gloves. I was able to traverse down it quickly cutting left to right. I have bought 5 boards this season.. I don't think I have "the one" for patrol. I have been doing my homework... I went off the deep end and bought a SuperPig.. I wanted the full camber, well built, appropriate for my weight and boot size.. I am so close to booting out on my "womans" board.. apparently, I am a "bigfoot" I haven't got to ride it. It came in Sunday and my last day on the Mountain was Saturday. It is the opposite of a flat based noodle my local shops pushed. I saw my local snowboard shop owner on the mountain... his bad advice made since when I saw him on skis🤦‍♀️ Your videos helped me so much. I would love to attend a tuning workshop with you.

@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel This video drop was perfectly timed with my end of season reflection and musing. You pu weirdly put voice to my exact thoughts on the older demographic that may be experiencing the same problems I experienced getting new gear for the first time in 20y. I get the impression you may be a little bit of a math/physics guy🤓 When I returned to snowboarding this season, I sized down the length of my board by 20cm. In theory, I felt that a smaller mountain +an older + a less muscular me, could best bridge the time gap by sizing down. It worked out. I rode like I had taken 1 season off instead of 18. I am going to take out my old gym journal and compare some variables... there has to be a fuzzy conversion formula for "then vs now" My strength, height, weight with my preferred board length, flex, profile and waist width (then) = X(now) Other variables to factor could be terrain, conditions, speed of base & effective edge... (still prossing and trying to understand effective edge and base bevel, appeals to my love of carving) prior level and style of riding. I went from a stiff, long, full camber board on steep, long runs with "tall" mogul feilds you had to slalom around. I had need for speed... now I'm older and not as muscular. My local resort is small. I think my new ride style is "ecletic" all mountain "cruiser" I am on everything big, small and in the trees. I stop to help kids and young ladies that have fallen and could use a hand up. (Usually there is a guy dow hilI watching her struggle) I also pick up and return gear when a whipe-out turns into a yard-sale. No two runs are the same. I hop on a lift with a stranger, alk lots of questions about their board tech specs . They usually offer to lead me on a run or two to assess their bord function and ride style. They show me on and off trail features that are unmarked and new to me. I plan on deep diving into all your tech videos again. I liked your take on :longer boards' stability. I was also thinking of taking my old GNU for a lap next season to compare all the new tech i have been trying vs my old GNU. I am going to try out the superpig too.. I want to experienceand gain a practical understanding of a volume shifted board. It is stiff with extra camber🤔🤓. What does the superpig super build feel like under foot? Gimmick or awesome sauce? Too much board for me? I invested $400 to find out... worth it for the first hand intel. I have already been asked by family and friends to take them snowboarding next season. Some are new to the sport and some haven't been in years. I want to be a resource to get them enjoying the snow as quickly as possible without the information overload they would not wrestle with. They know I will have been down every rabbit hole possible, overthought eveything.. settling down.. then point them right direction with precise resources to review👌

@@wendyp4557 I think you’re on the right track. A shorter board is easier to handle in variable terrain with less input. Long boards need to be soft-ish in order to not feel like tanks, which is hard to find. I think I will downsize again in my later years. Right now the added stability I get from length is much appreciated. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! 🙏😊

41 years riding here, 50 years old -- railing turns, race boards since '89. Most of the industry still markets to novice teenagers. They've been so entrained since x-games took the whole sport freestyle, in 1996, when ESPN introduced it to the masses, bringing masses-worth of youthful beginners to the sport. For example, who will be the first soft-boot manufacturer to measure in BSL? FFS, it's still, four decades later, impossible to know soft boot length absent boot in hand.

They know what they're doing there, for sure! The key, however, is that Stranda fully determine their own core profiles and cores. Mats has been told by the factory "you're the only person designing flexes (core profiles) like that these days!".... Core thickness and wood choice is a major contributor to those flexes. No finger joints in the core and ash wood makes things more expensive, longer lasting and really just better. The GP87 epoxy adds a certain magic to all of their boards, too. Really wanna try a Cardiff some day!

Lars - Thanks for a great season of content! Learned so much and, more importantly, my stoke for riding grew so much through interacting with your videos. One possible topic: stance position on the board, i.e. "reference" versus "centered", and how moving up or back on the board lead to different advantages or feeling in carving, and turning in general. "Slammed to the back for pow" is easy to conceptualize, but I'd love your take on the nuance of position within available mounting positions. I tend to have a narrower stance, and that can lead to feeling more restricted on where I can place my stance because my front foot will be all the way back or my back foot will be all the way forward (in what the mounting screw positions allow at each foot). This could also expand into how board setback (as stated by the manufacturer) plays into this topic. For example, I ride a Jones Mind Expander 162 with 0 mm setback... how should that inform my best position for carving? Cheers!

@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel 18 күн бұрын
Thank you kindly!! Back knee issues mostly have two or one of the two reasons: - The natural tracking of your knee/ankle isn't matched within its tolerance by the binding angle. So you put on an angle that you're technically working against, say -6° in a riding style where you're pushing the knee inwards/towards the nose in a heel turn or maybe at all times... If you ride duck, keep that knee somewhere over the toes - almost by pushing it towards the tail a bit... - Too much pressure on the back foot!! If you're 90% on your back foot, you may need to change that... I'm predominantly on my front foot, and if I'm more on the back foot in really deep powder where a rocker nose is just not enough, it's easier on the knee with a forward angle. I might do some summer video stuff on this. Good idea!!

Great channel Lars. I've watched most of the videos this season and passed them along to other people. I got a Stranda Treesurfer this season inspired by you and love it. The ride is amazing. I plan to get a Biru for next season and keep my previous resort board as my "rock board". The snowboarding industry is definitely missing out on a sizeable market of riders with money to spend. Unfortunately they've decided that segment is not cool and I feel like we are barely tolerated sometimes. A younger rider saw my posi posi setup and commented "Wow those are some high angles. Why do you run them?" My answer "Because the mounting discs won't go any higher." His eyes went wide and to just rode away. I laughed. We are a strange breed! I'm thinking about getting a hardboot setup for next winter. Primarily for my splitboard, but I've enjoyed hardboot resort riding in the past. They were the most comfortable "snowboard" boots I have ever used...they were actually AT ski boots. So they'll see resort use as well. Keep up the good work. I can't afford to fly you to where I live for a lesson, but if I run into you on a visit to Fernie I'll give you a piggy back to the bar for a pint or two.

hope i'm not stepping on toes here Lars, but if i may... define "cant". angle/raise outside of foot? angle/raise heel? angle/raise toes? some may disagree, but canting for softies is almost pointless. marketing, just like this "volume shifted" board trend IMO. not kind of pointless. absolutely pointless. performance wise. although a volume shifted board could be a niche quiver board i suppose. sticking foam wedges to the foot bed of a binding can also be a "cant" if you really want. however, if certain medical conditions exist for the rider, canting may be helpful. with the flex of a soft boot (any stiffness), this truly has no major benefit like as if you were riding a more rigid hard boot. catek is long gone and dated compared to modern equipment; just like all the older hardboot stuff. get modern stuff if you want to enjoy it more. bomber power plates do offer cant options (0, 3, 6) and the design of these plate systems are originally intended for hardboot/alpine riding. they are heavy. when i rode them, i ran 0* cant front, 3* rear. when canting is used with hard boots, a general rule of thumb is that you can also spread out to a little wider stance due to this stance position/settings. canting on front toe rise and rear heel rise is another basic rule of thumb for hardboot. again, not necessary for softboot. i've ridden these bomber plates, JJA plates, donek bx plates (disco'd) and Apex gecko cross plates (disco'd). they're all flat except for the bombers. favorites are the geckos and a similar version can be found at virus snowsports in Germany if interested. given that, canting can help with a mental aspect of progression if that's the goal. try it. like that "new board" feel. it goes away eventually. one must ask, why cant? see above. this is a page out of the alpine book (plus 38yrs experience) and it seems that some softboot companies got on the bandwagon as this may be something to market. the theory is there. this practice with softies just doesn't fully jive. purely my 2 cents, but some may say facts.
