Five tips for learning how jump on your snowboard. If you can ride confidently and with some speed, then you're ready to get your board into air. These five tips will help you to learn with good technique, at your own pace, and in a way that keeps you safe.
The first tip is to start small. There are all kinds of natural side hits and rollers to jump off outside park. Get into the habit of spotting places to jump and hitting them every chance you get. Even inside the park, you can skip the takeoff and jump off the knuckle.
The second tips is to set up your approach to the jump. How you set up for the jump will determine your landing, so you want to make sure you get it right. Set yourself up with your knees bend, back straight, hands over your nose & tail, head looking forward, and board running straight and flat.
The third tip is to decide how you're going to get into the air. Your options are to ollie, nollie, pop off both feet, or coast and let the jump do the work. I'd recommend to coast or pop off the jump to start. Then once you've mastered those learn how to ollie and nollie.
The fourth tip is to bend your knees in the air. When you're just starting to jump it can be hard to be aware of what you're doing the in air, but bending your knees is key. Bending your knees will help keep you balanced, keep your board level, and will help you absorb the landing. Bending your knees will also make it easier for when it comes time to learn grabs.
The fifth tips is to land straight. It's very common to want to slam on the breaks as soon as you land, but that can cause you to crash. Land straight and in control, then gradually turn to your heels to slow down. If you feel like you have to slam on the breaks, then you were probably riding into the jump with too much speed to start.
One bonus tip and it's the most important tip is the check the landing. Almost every snowboarder I know has a story of hitting a jump and there being someone in the landing. Always check to make sure the landing is clear and that you have lots of room to ride the jump out.
Have fun out there learning to jump guys! If you have any question you can leave them down in the comments. Check out the Trick and Beginner playlist for more videos. For even more bonus tips head over to my Patreon page where I'll be posting bonus tips for every video I make. Thanks as always for watching and I'll see ya in the next video!

I am pretty new to jumping and I would add a 6th tip: on take off scrub your speed before the jump and then commit. Even if you are on the jump going a bit faster than you wanted, stay committed and focused and don't try to scrub your speed on the jump face. From personal experience, scrubbing late just leads to crashing.

Agreed, especially when it comes to committing to it. Indecisiveness will only mess you up.

I've begun practicing jumping and got a little stuck with it actually. Very often I couldn't stay level in the air but started randomly turning to some direction, causing me to land too much on the edges or the nose/tail and falling. In one occasion, in a little bit bigger jump, I turned so that I landed on my back and another occasion on my face. Those hurt and could be dangerous, so I started exploring what I could do about it. I watched some of your videos Kevin and today when I went practicing jumps again, I took this one tip that was completely new for me: keep your hands above the nose and tail of your board. That really did it for me. I was able to jump bigger jumps with more speed than ever before and did not fall any landings. At first, it felt a little bit weird only partly seeing what's in front of me, because my chest wasn't facing forward anymore, but I got used to that pretty quickly. That tip just really worked for me. Thanks Kevin!

i know this is old, but also watch over your shoulder instead of turning in the air, it happens subconciously, so make it a point not to turn to look forwards, just look over shoulder.

Last session I've been trying small jumps all day, and the day ended with me breaking my ankle, so season's over for me. These tips are awesome, and here's one more from me: DON'T jump when you feel too tired. Your feet will stop listening eventually and one of the landing won't be pretty. I've been jumping successfully the whole day, so I said "meh, one more won't hurt", but my body didn't follow through and I landed on my ankle. So when you're tired, just call it a day. You'll do more jumping next time! :)

Where do you want the majority of your weight to be while riding landing? I know when you are carving you put a bit more weight on your front foot but when you are coming off a jump do you want to do the same thing? or evenly distribute your weight or put a little more weight on the back foot? Thanks! Love this channel!

My friend and I went to a beginner park this weekend and it ended up being a bad time for my friend. She wasn’t doing well and kept falling while I was progressing quickly and didn’t fall much. I skateboard occasionally and can do a few tricks, my friend is only able to ride. Didn’t realize the skateboarding helped so much with learning snowboarding as well. It was interesting, but I felt bad for my friend. She gave up, while I was having a blast.

Doesn’t rocket/camber play a major roll in landing jumps? I remember the first few times I snowboarded (2005), jumps were easier to land. The Boards felt stable. On my most recent trips, jumps where a lot harder. The boards felt less stable. Do you know if Burton rental boards went from being cambered to rockered over the years?

When I learnt how to snowboard 3 years ago nobody ever taught me which way to go goofy or regular so I went goofy and did it like that for 3 years. Although I am almost as good at switch as I am normal I was wondering if I should switch my stance. I recently got into park and because I skateboard I'm much better at tricks regular because that is how I skateboard. So do you think I should switch my stance so I can do tricks easier. Thanks
@aubreygarfield2910
@aubreygarfield2910 8 жыл бұрын
I have snowboarded for four years. The first year I rode regular and could barely get down the mountain. After that I switched to goofy and did a lot better, however I still do most my tricks regular. The only tricks I do goofy are tamedog and cork.

@sydneyrobinson6444
@sydneyrobinson6444 7 жыл бұрын
It's not necessarily bad, especially for beginner. To give your board a little bit of love, try the falling leaf. It's a great beginner skill, which relies on braking and maneuvering on heel side, that will help you transition into riding straight and ultimately carving and turning-- i'm sure there are videos on here that demonstrate it and could help you.

As said in the video, popping pushes you off the jump, and coasting jump makes you "fall" off the end of the jump. With coasting, you don't push off with your legs. You just ride off the end of the jump, tuck your legs, then land. Hope this helped! :D
