You mention "fall line" once, early on. From teaching friends and family, that is a major, important concept. The common, natural thought is that "straight" means in line with the trail. But very often the trail is sloping left to right or vice versa, and downhill (for most things related to board control) means the fall line rather than in line with the trail. Not that it is an answer to things, but important for a beginner to understand the difference between downhill (fall line) and down the trail. This concept is tougher on a snowboard vs. skis since a snowboard is inherently asymmetric (one foot is forward), and it may be confusing as to why it seems easier to turn left rather than turning right - and both factors (left-right slope of the trail and one foot forward) may be involved in answering that. Great video as always.

when it is flat i actually do a tail press and little pops. doing a small trick is better than doing those tiny adjusting movements on flat base which make my legs go to sleep mode. not sure if others feel he same...

Agreed. Especially if it's super flat and I've slowed to a crawl, popping the board off the snow can prevent an awkward tipover.

Can you make a video on going straight on steep slopes? I always get scared when I’m looking down a steep run on a blue and I don’t want to go straight for more than a second and I instantly slow down or stop by cutting to an edge. And then what happens is I don’t have enough speed when a steep hill turns into a long flat because I’ve slowed down too much.

in my experience, If you know how to carve and hold an edge; try holding just your heel or toe edge on the way down. start with greens, and work your way up. speed is scary, but the more you try it the more comfortable it will get for you. some boards are definitely more stable than others at higher speeds, with those less stable boards it may be a little more chattery. Overall, pick an edge so the board doesn't pick one for you, and gradually get comfortable at higher speeds. make sure you're in control at all times and can stop/turn if needed. happy learning!

@@Dmcjixjdndncnc thanks so much! I did practice a few runs on green going straight on hills, but I think the fear of speed gets to me. And when I’m on a much steeper hill I’m more inclined to slow down or do wide carvings/turns, but it’s like a stop and go situation. I see more advanced riders go somewhat straight with really quick edge to edge, but they’re not turning or slowing down. Even just going straight and not having the instant reaction to want to cut deep into an edge is hard for me. Thanks for all the tips. Definitely practicing on greens helps!

@@s0fa274 same here! Like how do some riders change edge so fast they barely go diagonal at all??
@Dmcjixjdndncnc
@Dmcjixjdndncnc Жыл бұрын
@@dancexxchild it’s a more shallow carve; rocking back and forth between heel and toe edge, and not skidding your turns.

I'd avoid running flat on steeps because it's too easy to catch an edge and flip. You should be able to pick up plenty of speed by keeping the nose generally forward and switching edges with quick, shallow turns.

Nice tips! what’s a good way to pick up speed before approaching a flat ground? at times I’ve had to slow down to avoid a crowd in front of me but then not sure how to pick up speed again thereafter

Follow the fall line, try and hold your edge and avoid skidding any turns you need to make. Another thing I do is I watch riders who seem familiar with the terrain. When I notice locals bombing it on terrain that seems to be getting more shallow, I assume it’s because there’s a flat ahead, most of the time it’s worked, and if it doesn’t work, then who doesn’t like some speed!

Thank you. This really helps. I can't stand flat tight switch backs. Talk about leg burn. My board gets squirrelly on flats that are slushy can figure out why this is so hard for me. I can do blacks but this flat stuff sends me to a place I don't want to be. OK, I'm better now. LOL! Well, on flat slushy stuff it's hard to get the board on an edge...advice?

Surf the slush by staying on top with shallow, skidded turns.

@@darko714 OK thank you. I’m going to do that. I think it’s what you are saying because my board starts shifting back and forth underneath me like it’s controlling my ride rather than me controlling it. Acts “squirrelly” and then that freaks me out. I can do blue runs but the greens & flats occasionally are harder for me.

I do not snowboard much so I am not that good. I can link turns and jump a little but that is all. I I have noticed is that I can not have the board flat, ever. It feels completely out of control. What I do is your number "3", always have a slight edge (even if going straight) making minimal turns. Maybe I can not predict the fall line as much? I have catched my edge so many times that I do not feel comfortable having my board flat anymore. Any thoughts? When you say "flat" do you mean completely flat or do you still have your weight towards one side?
@darko714
@darko714 Жыл бұрын
You're doing fine. Staying on an edge is the best strategy. Riding flat is an advanced skill that requires practice. If the board drifts even slightly sideways, you might catch an edge and flip. I only do it over patches of blue ice.

The secret is keeping tension straight forward. This means pressure into the riding direction. Regular Rider: Left foot, pressure on the outside, Right Foot, pressure on the inside. Goofy Rider: Right Foot, pressure on the outside, Left foot, pressure on the inside.
