I’ve taken my Range Rover through similar conditions in the Alps. I started out with All Season tyres which are ok for general winter use but don’t really cut it in more extreme conditions; snow chains saved the day several times. There is no substitute for proper winter tyres; I now use Continental TS850 Winter Contact tyres and they are awesome; it’s like a different vehicle; haven’t needed chains since (but still carry them just in case.)

Nicely done, especially considering you had someone shouting in your ear the whole time. One question, was there any particular reason for fitting the chains on the rear? I was always taught to fit them on the front wheels (for steering.)

Excellent video. Pushing thru that snow, at a very reasonable speed, is not something that most vehicles can do...not for any real distance. It's one thing to push thru a short run with enough speed and momentum, but pushing thru long distances of deep snow is not something your average 4x4 or AWD "suv" can handle. Hummer H1's and Land Rovers...top of the heap!

@WheelsRCool
@WheelsRCool 12 жыл бұрын
@JacanaProductions That's probably more because most SUVs do not have locking differentials for the 4WD system, and as a result, the torque goes to the wheels with the least amount of traction (when you see say the left front wheel spinning and the right rear wheel or vice versa or only the left wheels or only right wheels spinning).

In deep snow it would be better to use mud and ruts (or even sand) setting since in gravel, grass and sand mode traction control is extremely restrictive (to prevent wheel slip) but in soft snow you need wheel slip.

If you're only using chains on two wheels, aren't you supposed to fit them on the front? (So that the vehicle goes in the direction you want it to?) But the rear is better than nothing I suppose.
@JacanaProductions
@JacanaProductions 12 жыл бұрын
@WheelsRCool Think it's more physics, search for some monster lifted trucks here on youtube with lockable hubs etc, they still get stuck if the snow is really deep. Even with shAWD where you can put 100% if the torque to a single wheel give the Acura deep enough snow and you'll get stuck.

@jwatwater Sure you can, My point wasn't about which venues the car fits in at. It was about the capabilites of the vehicles in snow. A subaru forester would plow through that with 4 season tires and you wouldn't need training from a Scary old man to do it without getting stuck. Range Rover $94,000 Subaru Forester $21,000 and its not a 2 day wait and a $800 price tag every time it needs service also the subaru is more reliable handles better it's better on fuel and is safer so make your choice

My Land Cruiser would do likewise on snow tyres, especially with chains fitted. It was a nice little demo but not enough to separate the Range Rover from its competitors. A real test would have been a steeper incline and descent will the HDC activated

Only one pair of chains? and yes it is necessary when OEM tires for this vehicle are All Season , not All Terrain M&S :) No worries, I have never seen a new one of these off -road ever in person and hardly on youtube either, that is why there is the Bowler! The all state police deal with rear wheel drive Crown Victoria's on snow and ice, yes sir! and they often pick people up from their ditched SUV's. Just a reminder winter is just around the corner!

Add a small incline or wet snow and NOTHING will get you through really deep snow apart from those speciality Toyota trucks with those $1000 per tire balloon tires (top gear polar special) . I see massive SUVs stuck all the time here in CO. People you can't defy the laws of physics. Of course snow tires will help on ice and keep you on the road but really deep snow, forget about it!

I had a RR. I got rid of it because I kept getting it stuck. My Jeep Wrangler can go in 2wd where the RR got stuck in 4wd. Don't believe me? Check my videos. I had 2.5" lift and 275/55/20 Good year Silent Armors on the RR. My Wrangler is a Rubicon with locking differentials and it is a BEAST.

***** Haha! Watch some of my Jeep videos with 14.5 inch wide super Swamper Boggers in 3 foot deep snow. The Jeep is an animal. The Range Rover was not my first 4x4, nor was it a bad tire choice. You can't put "good" tires on a Range Rover Because the massive road oriented disk brakes require a minimum 19" wheel diameter, but no one makes 19" off road tires. And with 20" wheels, the range rover doesn't have enough lift in the highest air suspension setting to accommodate 33x11.50x20 mud tires. I tried a bunch of combinations and the one you see is as good as it gets with a Range Rover. And even if you find a video with a Range Rover plowing through 24 inches of fresh powder on street tires, it doesn't mean It's actually an off-roader. The trails I go to have seen an accumulation of snow for months with no one else on them. The snow is crusty, hard packed, and hard to blow through. The Range Rover got stuck. The Jeep Wrangler just powered through without a complaint.
