We are back, join us for another great adventure as we wander up the Watkin Path but add to the route with a descent down the South Ridge to join the Watkin Path again at the top of the waterfalls, May 2023. Parking is at What3words ///trying.january.tastier
Sir Edward Watkin created this path from the existing quarry path to the summit of Snowdon to allow walkers to climb to the peak. The Snowdon Watkin Path was first opened in 1892 by Prime Minister William Gladstone in front of 2,000 people. This was the first official footpath in Great Britain, hence the importance of the ‘Gladstone Rock’ which you will see on the route.
The Watkin Path is one of the toughest routes to the summit of Snowdon with a challenging final ascent. The Watkin Path is considered to be the most challenging of the six ‘classic’ routes to the summit of Snowdon. Starting just a few metres above sea level, the route offers the biggest vertical ascent gain to the summit, as well as sections of steep and loose scree making the final approach very demanding.
The route has stunning views with a woodland section, fantastic waterfalls, and remains of old mining buildings.
Many claim the Watkin Path is the best route to the summit of Snowdon and certainly is a favourite of ours. Today we Combine the climb with a descent down some of the Rhyd Ddu Path and South Ridge heading back over to the Watkin path to join it again at the top of the amazing waterfalls for a quick swim before heading back to base.
A great adventure.
Here's a guide to walking up the Watkin Path, one of the routes to reach the summit of Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales:
Preparation and Planning:
Check the weather forecast before your trip. It's best to attempt the Watkin Path on a clear day to fully appreciate the stunning views.
Make sure you have suitable hiking gear, including sturdy footwear, waterproof clothing, and extra layers to accommodate changing weather conditions.
Carry essential items such as a map, compass, mobile phone, snacks, water, and a first aid kit.
Start your hike early in the day to allow enough time for the ascent and descent.
Getting to the Watkin Path:
The Watkin Path begins at the small village of Nant Gwynant, located on the A498 between Beddgelert and Pen-y-Pass in Snowdonia National Park.
If you're driving, there is a small car park near the path's starting point, but it can fill up quickly during peak times. Alternatively, consider using public transportation or arranging a shuttle service.
The Initial Ascent:
The Watkin Path starts with a steep climb through a beautiful wooded area known as the "Goblin Forest." Follow the clearly marked trail and be prepared for some strenuous uphill walking.
Take your time and enjoy the surroundings as you make your way up. There are several waterfalls along the route that offer fantastic photo opportunities.
Quarry and Waterfall Views:
As you continue ascending, you'll reach the disused quarry area known as the "Giant's Staircase." Take a moment to appreciate the views of the surrounding peaks and the distant coastline.
Follow the path as it zigzags through the quarry, keeping an eye out for the signs that guide you along the route.
After leaving the quarry, the path follows the course of the Afon Cwm Llan river, and you'll encounter more waterfalls, including the famous "Gladstone Rock" and the impressive "Cwm Llan Cascades."
The Summit Approach:
As you near the summit, the terrain becomes steeper and more challenging. Take care with your footing and follow the trail markers to stay on the right path.
You'll eventually reach Bwlch Ciliau, a col between Mount Snowdon and Y Lliwedd. From here, you'll have panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
At this point, you can choose to continue your ascent to the summit of Mount Snowdon via the South Ridge route, or you can retrace your steps back down the Watkin Path.
Descent:
If you decide to descend via the Watkin Path, take care on the steep sections, especially if the ground is wet or slippery.
Remember to take breaks and stay hydrated during the descent, as it can be physically demanding on your knees and leg muscles.
Safety Tips:
Always let someone know your hiking plans, including your expected time of return.
Stay on the marked path and be mindful of your surroundings to avoid any potential hazards.
Be prepared for changing weather conditions and be willing to turn back if conditions deteriorate.
Check for updates and any safety information from the Snowdonia National Park Authority before your trip.
Remember, the Watkin Path is a challenging but rewarding route. Take your time, enjoy the journey, and stay safe throughout your hike.

Your getting outside the better weather seasons window now. Rain, heavier winds and it being more cloudy restricting the views is more of what you should anticipate from now until spring. It is a great route.

Not a bad idea, on a clear day you have lines of sight to summit and both paths so easy to navigate. Thanks for watching.
