Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

yes, you NEED chains. Clementine needs all the help she can get in that kind of weather, especially in deep wet snow. not only that, but it sure beats having to shovel her out. 💚💙🩵💜🩷 After all you dress up for Winter, shouldn’t you show her the same kind of love?

Here is my fave soup recipe, a pack of vegan chorizo sausage chopped, one medium onion, diced, two to three lbs diced potatoes, four to six cups of veggie broth or vegan chicken style broth, two whole bunches of kale, de-steamed nd cut into bite sized pieces. Salt and pepper to taste, tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp cayenne, and two bay leaves (I also add a couple dashes of oregano and fennel seed but they're not in the original recipe) To prepare heat oil of choice in a pot, brown the sausage and onion, add potatoes, broth and seasonings and bring to a boil until potatoes are almost fork tender, then add the kale and put on the lid( it will look like there's too much kale, but trust me, it shrinks) and simmer until the kale is cooked down. I like to serve it with a ton of parmesan cheese and crusty bread with butter

YAY! It’s winter! This looks so magical! Here is an Amazing Orzo soup recipe Veggie stock Flour Butter Soy milk S&P Garlic Celery Onion Carrots Orzo Take the top items and create a roux, then once it gets to a thick almost gravy structure take the second group of ingredients chop and sautee them in with the roux. Cook for 15-20 ( add water/veggie stock as needed to keep consistency good), adding the amount of water called for in the orzo package. Once the roux has thinned out to a more watery consistency, but still tastes good add in the rinsed orzo. Cook until orzo is soft. Serve with side of bread.

I’m 76 and live with a lot of cats. Watching your videos during my chemotherapy sessions made my life bearable. I’ve had my surgery and finished radiation. You two are an inspiration to this old lady. Watching you build your homestead has been awesome. I’d love a t shirt. Size large if possible, any color is fine. They are beautiful shirts and I’d buy one, but medical expenses have left me living check to check. I make sureI watch you every Sunday. I know it gets dark way to early. Same here in Indiana.

Hello - I’m 59, and going through my second battle with cancer (Colorectal Cancer 2015, Metastatic Melanoma - 2022). You are a true warrior to be going through treatment in your advanced (ahem) years. My hat is off to you. I too, have enjoyed watching them build their homestead. After watching them from the beginning of VANwives, I had no doubt they could accomplish great things together in the woods. Jaz/Crystal - I would like to offer to pay for Sherry’s T-shirt. All you have to do is reserve both an XL T-shirt, and an XL sweat shirt for me (I will pay for mine too). Who knows Sherry, maybe you/we will be the lucky winner(s).

Keep in mind, you can use the backhoe attachment on the tractor to pull itself back if needed. You can also push down with backhoe to raise rear wheels and then swing it over for a bit of directional control. Your first winter with the tractor, you’ll get the hang of it and all it can do.

He is being encouraging. He is trying to help them be more capable with their tractor. The first step would have been to check if the brake pedal is split you might be able separate the rear brakes and get traction by stepping on the brake to the tire that is spinning. If still stuck, look for and apply differential lock pedal. If you're still stuck, lower the backhoe out riggers to about 3 inches off the ground (as wheelie bars, put the tractor in neutral and use the backhoe to pull yourself off the ice. Just be super slow and super careful doing any of this. There is probably some youtubes of these procedures. Be safe, and good luck.

The joys of living on a lake, just being able to go a paddle when you feel like it(well when it’s still unfrozen) I used to live on the lake and go every morning with my dog. Once I left them behind and it was so upset with me, destroyed the cabin 🛶 As your have experience, and probably will keep experiencing until we get chains. They are useless without them in the winter, but once you have them, makes a world of a difference. Keep up the amazing work

I’ve been watching the two of you since you were full time vanlifers. I have been a full time vanlifer, RVer , had my teenager live in a tent for several months one year while my partner and I lived in a van, lived full time in a truck with cap & again, full time in a van. I’ve watched So many videos & while I've definitely done work in each of my homes, I've never done one up completely. You inspire me to really do a full renovation in my next vehicle (either a stepvan or box truck). I've got some skills but the electrical freaks me out...my van is my daily driver & I just can't afford to blow it up 🙁. And, we all know, run your electrical first... I'd be chuffed to wear Pack gear & spread the word.

my favorite soup: Take a pumpkin and cut it into manageable pieces (with skin, but remove seeds). * Boil the pumpkin in a large pan in low water. Add a stock cube to this. Let everything cook until the pumpkin is soft. * Now puree everything into an even mass. Add a cup of orange juice together with 2x a clove, 1x cinnamon stick, some star anise, 1x cardamon, 1/2 teaspoon of Turmeric and a pinch of saffron. Let this simmer gently for about 2 hours. * Finish with about 1/2 liter of cream, salt, pepper and some sambal to taste...

Hi Pack Leaders. My name is Joseph C. Yarbrough Cemetery archaeologist. I been watching you guys for 2 years now. I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised on the bayou. Lived there for 30 before moving to Pearl River, Louisiana in 1988. Yall asked for new soup recipes. Well here on the bayou we eat something called a GUMBO. You need chicken, sausage, ham slices, shrimp crab and oysters. Salt pepper garlic onion parsley gumbo fila and flower cooking oil and water with rice. you start off by making a RUE. Put several spoons of flower in a pot and add some cooking oil. Stir on a medium heat til it turns brown . After its brown add water (3 or 4 cups. Stir until it all mixes together. Next add the spices to your taste. I like it mild. Then add the chicken seafood and other ingredients. Cook on a low heat for about 45 minutes to a hour. In a separate pot cook the rice. A cup should be enough. Serve the gumbo over the rice in a bowl. You can serve any kind of bread with it and some wine. You can also make a ice box lemon pie or lost bread. I know this must sound strange but this is all Louisiana food. Love what yall did with the property. Wish all the best.

I grew up in an off grid solar powered house as well. However, we had all sorts of quirks such as our water pump shutting off when we had too little or "too much" electricity, which is why it's so cool to see how you're making your systems work, and the improvements in technology. It brings me a little nostalgia to see that lifestyle again❤ (And also it's not the whole snowplowing experience if half the job isn't digging out your plow that got stuck lol)

Our fav cold weather recipe that’s so versatile is Salsa chicken! I make it in the crock pot but it works in any slow cooker or even Dutch oven. It’s just chicken breast, a jar of salsa, a packet of taco seasoning which has (1 tablespoon chili powder. ¼ teaspoon garlic powder. ¼ teaspoon onion powder. Pinch of cayenne pepper. ¼ teaspoon dried oregano. ½ teaspoon paprika. 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin. 1 teaspoon salt) and then at least one to two cups of broth or stock. When it’s done you can shred it and have it as taco meat, add more broth and veggies to make a soup, ect! This is a Texas home staple!!

Check to see if your machine has a Diff lock for the rear, ours has a button on the floor you press with your heal. This has saved my butt several times.

I love my weekly dose of the homestead and the girls. You take on any challenges that come along and I love that. I’m 67 years young and live in Montana. I cut my own wood and heat my small home on 50 archers that I purchased when I was 25 years old. I raised my both of my daughters here and look forward for when they visit come to visit with my grandkids. They Love it here. I hunt and fish and have a small garden in the spring and summer. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

We love having a queer couple to live vicariously through. My wife and I have been watching since the beginning of cabin life. We had a similar lifestyle in Kielder Forest (UK). We went there for our honeymoon and never returned home. We lived there for three years but had to move closer to civilisation due to complex medical needs. We’re pretty much housebound now as a result so really enjoy watching your adventures together. Its our weekly escape. Would love some merch as money is tight. Would you be interested in bartering? Hows a soup receipe for trade??😂 -carrots, parsnips, potatoes, squash/turnip and chopped apple (skinned). -Chop all, put in a pan with a dash of oil and very lightly brown the veg. -Add a jug of water and slowly bring to boil. -Once the carrots/potatos are soft grab a blender and blend the crap out of it all. You end up with a lovely thick winter warmer soup. -Add a dash of salt and pepper (chilli if you are spicy) and enjoy! With love from the north of England, Carrie & Lisa

What you have accomplished over this past year is nothing short of amazing. It’s like a beautiful winter wonderland there. You’re so inspiring and your joy is overflowing. Just always be careful because there are predators out there, don’t let your happiness distract you from the fact. Perhaps most of the Bears have already gone into hibernation, but there could be one around who is very hungry and aggressive. It can be dangerous for you and the dogs. So please be extra careful and seriously prepared, I love you all very much.

Love your channel and watching how you have transformed your homestead. Next time you’re stuck use your backhoe to pivot the tractor back on to the road. Extend out to the side, bucket down till the tires are off the ground, the pivot tractor back on to the road. All with the out-riggers up. Then back out to get the front on the road. Easier and safer than trying to use a strap/chain and a second vehicle.

My grandmothers Lentil Soup: 1 bag of lentils (soaked overnight), a ham bone works best but 1/2 pound of bacon works great too, one LARGE onion, 6 carrots peeled and halved, 6 stalks of celery cut into 3rds, 3 quarts of stock - beef or chicken (I prefer two beef and one vegetable stock), 4 bay leaves, salt and pepper to taste. Simmer till thick. This will thicken even more over night so just add some water or more stock when you put it back on the stove next day and of course you know soup, like stew, is always better the next day. ENJOY! Wishing you a magical Christmas and 2024.

Per your request: Sausage/spinach Tortellini soup You’ll have to get these ingredients at the store. But worth it. 2 tbs olive oil 1 med. onion, chopped 3/4 lbs sweet Italian sausage Salt 6 cups chicken broth 1 lb. Cheese tortellini 5 oz. Baby spinach chopped 1 can petite tomatoes 1/2 can garbanzo beans (optional) Brown sausage and onions Add broth cover - bring to boil reduce heat. Add in tortellini - simmer til tender Stir in spinach, tomato’s and beans Serve topped with grated Parmesan I cook this in crock pot for a couple hrs before adding tortellini for another hour. I think you could let this simmer on your wood stove and get the same outcome. This also tastes almost better the next day as leftover soup. Enjoy

Chickpea Stew 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 1 Large Onion, chopped 2 Garlic Cloves, sliced 1 Bunch of Scallions 1 Can Garbanzo Beans, half smashed 1 can Tomatoes, pulp only 2-3 Cups Vegetable Stock 1 Bunch of Kale/Spinach Sautee the vegetables in a pot with olive oil, add the tomato pulp, garbanzo bean smash and whole beans and the vegetable broth. Let simmer, adding the leafy green with proper time to cook thoroughly. Vegan (or carnivore) sausage makes a great add, as does tortellinis.

Another lovely winter soup (I make mine a soupmaker) Broccoli & stilton soup A smooth, blended vegetable soup with blue cheese good for a comforting meal. Ingredients 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 stick celery, sliced 1 leek, sliced 1 medium potato, diced 1 knob butter 1l low salt or homemade chicken or vegetable stock 1 head broccoli, roughly chopped 140g stilton, or other blue cheese, crumbled Method STEP 1 Heat 2 tbsp rapeseed oil in a large saucepan and then add 1 finely chopped onion. Cook on a medium heat until soft. Add a splash of water if the onion starts to catch. STEP 2 Add 1 sliced celery stick, 1 sliced leek, 1 diced medium potato and a knob of butter. Stir until melted, then cover with a lid. Allow to sweat for 5 minutes then remove the lid. STEP 3 Pour in 1l of chicken or vegetable stock and add any chunky bits of stalk from 1 head of broccoli. Cook for 10-15 minutes until all the vegetables are soft. Recipe continues below advert STEP 4 Add the rest of the roughly chopped broccoli and cook for a further 5 minutes. STEP 5 Carefully transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth. STEP 6 Stir in 140g crumbled stilton, allowing a few lumps to remain. Season with black pepper and serve. You weren't stuck, that's a backhoe! You're front tires are traction tires indicating you have 4-wheel drive. Put it in 4-wheel drive for better control. As far as being stuck, simply claw yourself out. The hoe has enough power to pick your back wheels completely off the ground. Either pull yourself backwards, or swing to the side. Additionally the front bucket can be curled and placed onto the ground, and using the curl/ uncurl control, schooch the tractor a little forward or backward as needed. Lather, rinse, repeat! You gals are smart, you got this!

My favorite soup is a reminder of holidays, my dad always made it after we ate our holiday ham. Ham and Bean Soup made from leftover xmas ham. Simmer ham bone with some onions, celery tops and a bay leaf after few hours strain liquid to make broth. Saute onions, carrots and celery in a pan. Add potatoes to broth and boil, when potatoes are nearly done add the onions, carrots, celery, 2-3 cans of great northern beans and diced leftover ham. Lower heat and simmer for awhile. Last few days it's been in the 80s here (28.5ºC). Doesn't really feel like winter or holidays.

oh my gosh...my favourite soup ever! This is an easy no fail recipe. Saute' some onion and celery...throw in an entire head of cauliflower, chopped into 2 inch pieces, 4 potatoes chopped roughly. Add veggie stock to cover by 2 inches and add some Mrs Dash garlic and herb seasoning, dash of salt and pepper. Simmer til tender, and use a hand blender to puree. Here I add some cream or a can of evaporated milk...but you could add cashew cream if you like. Taste for seasoning and serve it with some homemade garlic croutons and some vegan cheese shredded. This entire process takes under 10 min prep time and 1 hr simmering. Also, You could easily make a version of Zuppa Toscana by using vegan sausage as well which is another super easy recipe. This video makes me miss the snow so much...Toronto has didly snow and I don't think any is expected for Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a safe and exciting New Year.

Soup Recipe In a big pot : Glob of veg butter/ substitute 2 heads of fresh glaric crushed Half a large onion thinly sliced and chopped 2 large carrots thinly sliced 4 stalks of celery thinly sliced Season with : Garlic Powder Onion powder Rosemary Salt & Pepper Cook this down till carrots are bright orange and celery and onion are translucent. Slowly begin to add in Veg stock - I also like to add the “chicken” bouillon that is Vegan. Once your pot is 2/3rds full of liquid and the veg add: 1 large can of diced tomatoes w/ juice 1 cup of uncooked pearl barley 2 potatoes cubed to small squares. Once this is all in the pot, top off with water and let it simmer most of the day, adding liquid and more spices as the barley and potatoes cook and absorb water. SEASON as you go!!

Crows and ravens are very intelligent, if you chase them (or worse hurt one) they will tell the rest and you'll have a *problem*. If you treat them well they will literally tell their friends and you'll end up with friendly birds popping by. We're in the city in western Canada and I've been trying to make friends with the local crows in the last year since we moved into our new place. They're not acting scared of me anymore and will actually hang out in the yard with me. They're hilarious.

I used to love making the following soup “recipe” regularly. Now I can not, because I do not have a freezer available. It took me about 2 days, but I would be able to freeze around 30 portions to be quickly reheated in the microwave. That is an important factor when living alone. In a big pot of about 10 liter capacity simmer some 5kg of beef leg bone or tail with herbs, salt and peppercorns. You can add whatever herbs you have available and like and/or tolerate. You can also add onions, et.al. for a different flavoring of the meat. For a richer broth you can add about 2kg of chicken wings. Let this simmer for at least 8 hours. Putting the pot on your wood stove in the winter is a nice side benefit of heating your cabin. Once the broth has cooled down, set the pot outside so the fat can solidify on top and be removed easily. You could also experiment with other bony meat cuts like pork, turkey, duck, goose or deer. After lifting off the solidified fat, I strain the broth to remove all the semi-dissolved herbs. Then I remove the bones and fat from the meat. Meat and broth go back into the pot and on the heat. Now I add the other goodies, like: cubed potatoes, corn, peas, lentils, chick-peas and/or angel-hair noodles. Add water to fill the pot to the brim and simmer for a few more hours. At the very end add some chopped fresh green herbs like parsley and dill. Change and/or substitute ingredients to your preference. And this recipe can be either more liquid like a soup or more solid like a stew, depending on the type and amount of ingredients you add. Yes it takes some time overall, but you can do other jobs while the pot is simmering. And the extra effort necessary to prepare a 10-15 liter pot as compared to 0,5 liters is negligible. And if you have a good sized freezer, you do a big production once and have quick and easy meals for a month more or less. Depending on how many people are in your household.

Well if you get through this many comments, nice work. ❤ Look into getting some liquid put into your tires, for the extra weight. Also you have a backhoe on it, you could have used it to pull yourself out... maybe. The front bucket can also be tilted down to push backwards, and if you're leaning, swing the backhoe to counter it.
