Clean your carb!!!
This video shows the step by step process of diagnosing a 2 stroke single stage snowthrower that simply “won’t start”.
In this video I cover how to disassemble the snow thrower to an easy to work on state, a full carburetor disassembly and cleaning, and the reassembly process.
Remember, just because the carb appears to be clean, doesn’t mean it is! It could very well have had a blocked passageway that was fixed with the cleaning process.
This is on a Yardworks 21” 5 horse power unit, however the process will be very similar if not the exact same on a comparable snowblower.
Let me know what you think in the comments!!!
-Dave

Hey Dave, if I was in your shoes, I would disassemble the whole carb completely upon cleaning (removing the spring, needle, rubber seat). I have sometimes found that any strong chemical cleaner can soften that rubber Tecumseh seat and cause the carb to not function properly. Just a recommendation. Don has a video on how to re-install the spring back on those tecumseh floats 👍. Really easy Remember that before you buy ANY machine, it's good to see it at least start when spraying the intake or adding gas to the cylinder. Also wouldn't hurt to carry a spark plug checker with you just in case. That can all be done before handing over the money 👍. Usually I see a carb access port on that particular model of snowblower but seems like it doesn't have one. Did you try to carefully remove the carb studs with a torx bit ratchet before removing the cover? Sometimes that works.

Hey Fill! Great points. All good info. I didn’t want to do a full tear down of the carb given this is an extra step far above most people’s level of capability. I figure if I can fix something with the least amount of possibility of error as possible, more people may be empowered to give it a try themselves. I do have to say, I haven’t seen that video - what a poor student I am! The sensor safe MAF sensor cleaner is also rubber safe, but I agree with you on that point. I did try to get at the torx bolts prior to removing the cover but it was a tight fit. I also wanted to clean up under the shroud to prevent rust in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting - I appreciate it.

That sparkplug looked really terrible, at first I thought the engine had no spark. And while the carb didn't really look dirty, as you found out, that leaves you in a false sense of security. Often times its the varnish you don't see, like in the main jet or emulsion tube. Good job cleaning it out, she fired up and ran real smooth after. I think the owner should be pleased. Good video!

Thanks for the info. I have a toro gas single stage and a toro 60Volt. This spring, I will be tuning up the gas one then sell it and buy another Toro 60volt. I’m getting tired of babying that carburetor! Most say u will spend more on batteries but battery tech is exponentially improving. Mine has gone thru 2 seasons and no problems whatsoever. Either waste time and energy (which is very important for an old arthritis laden man like me) or spend some dough for the “plug n play” ease of use of cordless. Which has now rivaled the power of gas believe it or not! (Talking about Toro 2 battery self propelled single stage)

Those little 2 stroke MTD snow throwers are awesome machines! I always same them when I can, and you get good money for them because they work well. The major flaw is that stupid baffle on the intake of the carb that directs the intake upward. Why they put it like that I cannot understand. I ALWAY put the baffle on pointing down. Most people leave the machine outside for at least some period of time and water/snow inevitably makes it's way in there and causes problems. You will not kick up any snow that will make it in to the intake of the carb with the baffle pointing down.
@DavesSmallEngines
@DavesSmallEngines 3 жыл бұрын
Wow that is a great tip. I will flip the baffle 180 degrees on the blower, and I will do the same on my blower too! I have a 5hp Toro (suzuki motor). Thanks!

Dave tell your buddy if he likes the older equipment such as the old Sears stuff, then he should look into The Gravely Brand Equipment like their, Walk byehind Machines, Riding Mowers/Garden Tractors and Attachments.. It's all gear driven and operated machinery... I'm a fan of John deere but Gravely was probably the best built Lawn and Garden Equipment as far as being powerful and long lasting equipment
@DavesSmallEngines
@DavesSmallEngines 3 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of that name. Was it available in Canada? He doesn’t like the older stuff - he just wasn’t financially able to get something newer - now he has this blower!
@goldhunter9641
@goldhunter9641 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavesSmallEngines Gravely was originated and built in West Virginia and sold all across America, from the early 1900s and I'm thinking somewhere around the 1920s up until the mid 2000s and they were a little Expensive When buying them New but definitely Worth the Money.. There is a lot of Gravely owners in Canada but I'm not sure if they were ever sold New by dealers up there.. Gravely is a very good quality built machine, that lasts a long time.. Nowadays, the Pre-owned Gravely Lawn and Garden Equipment can be fairly affordable in many areas but quite pricey in a lot of areas as well
