Finally a video where the camper know how to split wood. Great video. I get so tired of peoples trying to split wood with a knife and a chunk of wood. Every one wants to show off their knife and go into detail on why it was THE KNIFE.

I have the same tent and stove set up and will probably never change it. It's my fourth canvas tent and by far the best I've experienced yet for mobility and versatility. I use Moovit lubricant on the stove after it's been on a trip to keep it from rusting in the shed. It's non- flammable and food grade so no worries about the burn off when you're lighting that first fire up! Great video and great times!

Hi Justin, I really like this setup too. Its a nice balance of easy of setup, weight and space. I saw a folding titanium stove a while back that didn't look like a pain to setup that I may investigate however. I'll take a look at the Moovit - thanks for the tip!

I melted some citronella candle down and added some wood chips. You could use any wax ( unscented) but it makes a great fire starter. I saved a bunch of birch bark and fat wood and I'll bring a little bit of each, just in case I can't find any on site.

I have discovered the same distaste for Mechanix gloves while in the woods. I’ve recently switched to deerskin leather gloves, which I’ve treated with Obenhaufs. I prefer unlined gloves, which I layer with glove liners, so if they do get wet, I can dry everything out quickly. Haven’t used them a ton yet, but super happy with them so far.

Michael , I know you like you're equipment looking good so may I suggest a quick spray of a cheap can of high heat stove paint for your Knico stove . Mine had quite of bit of surface rust and one $6 can of stove paint later it looks great again. Also one trick suggested was that when putting the stove away for the season you spray the inside of the stove with generic vegetable spray to keep rust at bay, sounds like it would work.

I think I would get a full size cruiser axe or a single bit. You're making splitting harder than it should be. I do love the sheepherder stove, I have a collapsible one that fits into a space about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of yours. Mine is sort of a PITA to set up. You could make brackets for the back of the Argo to set the sled upside down for a cover over your gear. Love the furry hat!!!
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric - I'm trying to stay away from a full size axe (I have a full size epic splitting maul at home) as I want it to be useable for backpacking during the summer. In a later videos you will see my new 3/4 splitting axe which does pretty good. I try and split as little as possible by selecting the right size trees also ;) The sled idea is what I'm planning - I'm going to build a frame on the Argo to put a windscreen and canvas cover to keep me out of the snow. On the back I want a "upper" shelf with the sled being the "the shelf" that I can put gear and also remove for hauling wood once at camp. Haha - Me too that hat has won me over - its actually pretty amazing - very happy. Best wishes Eric and a happy new year - Michael & Esme.

The Emporium Outdoors: Ha! Yes, my Irish and English family all think peanut butter is nuts (my father immigrated here). Though an Irish vegan cousin eats other nut butters. You live in the Americas now, so maybe give it a go? It’s a salty, sweet combo that satisfies like no other. I look for nut butters that have two ingredients: the nut and salt. Anything else is unneeded. Perhaps let us know how you like it?

I like the Cossack hat very much. I wore something very much like it when I was an Air Force Security policeman at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. I don't know if you remember but we had a really bad snow storm both during the winter of 78-79 and 79-80. Both times the base was shut down for 3 days. We wore mukluks to walk around in and that hat really helped keep me warm overall. I really didn't care that, as you said, it looked a little silly. Function over form any day.

@davidclark4469 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors Michael, yes the Hat was standard issue in Air Force blue with the same faux fur. It seems to me that faux fur is just as warm as the real thing. Muk luks were good, and as you probably know they have about a three-quarter inch felt pad in the bottom, a rubber lower and a canvas upper with laces running all the way up to your knee. They're a little squishy to walk in but we wore thick wool socks. Bunny boots are actually better, however. They were a little bit more difficult to get a hold of because they were mostly for the Flyers. They looked like Mickey Mouse shoes, all white rubber or vinyl or latex or some combination perhaps, with an air valve to let the pressure off when you advance in altitude. Again you can wear them with thick socks and even though they are a bit heavy they are thoroughly toasty warm. You can stand in an icy stream all day and be perfectly warm in the feet. I've never investigated as to whether they are commercially available. Glad to hear about esmi staying warm.

Hi Jason, you cant go wrong with your new setup, its very convenient and can be used all year round. I had the Cabalas Big Horn III for a while (check my videos) and that was fine but nothing beats a canvas tent for winter camping. Also with a wood stove and camping in a forest I can't run out of fuel. :) Everything is subjective and my setup might not work for everyone.

Yes, Michael, you're gonna hear it: Mechanix Gloves (Mpact Leather). Check out their web site, they make more than one type, you know. And, for the stove... WD40 is for "Water Displacement". Clean off all the surface rust, wipe it clean... then treat it like cast iron cookware. Heat it up and rub a very thin coat of Flax Seed Oil on it, allow it to cool, and repeat a few times. It'll season it. Every time you use the stove, just rub a very light coating of the Flax Seed Oil on the stove as it's still too warm to touch, but not HOT. The oil will polymerize and harden.

Hi RatdogDRB - thanks for the tip on the stove - I'll give that a try!! Yea - I know the mechanix gloves come in more flavours but I was just very disappointed with the brand I guess. I'll take another look! Thanks again! Michael

Hi Michael; I'll have to check out the snowtrekker. Remember the BigHorn 3? Didn't hold up to show as well as advertised. Thank you Cabela's for lifetime guarantee! Convinced now that the only way to go is heavy, tough and steep. Looks nice up there. Summit of Mt Washington has had a little over 6 feet of snow/ice so far this season. I haven't been able to go camping or hiking for a while- house renovations going on. Seeing you and Esme made me jealous! You have a lot of remote area to get away from everyone. Winter's the best time in the Whites- a lot more solitude. Gonna have to check out your most recent vids- haven't had a lot of time lately!

Hi White Mountain Hikes - The Big Horn II passed the test and would be a solid winter tent for all the Canadian winter can dish out. However, I found packing away the tent solo after a good snow fall and ice was too much. The SnowTrekker is much smaller and easier to handle solo - also it being canvas helps with the general ice build up. Hope you find time to get out!!! We all get older every year and it get a little harder - no time like the present! ;). Love to see pics or video from your part of the world!

Hi James - there are some stakeouts but you are right - driving stakes is a non-starter in winter as the ground is like concrete. The skirts do a good job once the snow sets up and hold the tent firm.

Hi Lee, I have those mittens (I did a video years ago) and they are awesome for he winter and super cheap. I'm looking more for just work gloves, doesn't have to be warm as I have some Goretex mittens I use when the temp drops. You can get snow in Cumbria on the mountains in winter but it can get a bit sketchy if your not prepared. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Bet if you get a trailer or build one that can act as a bigger snow sled in the winter you could stay out there for a solid week. The one thing I like about camping is seeing how long I can stay out gear wise with a transport of sorts weight isn't an issue any more. Would just be cool to see a sled behind the Argo.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, I was thinking the same thing about the sled behind the Argo. I would need arms to stop the sled hitting the back of the machine when going down hill. The only limiting factor on how long I can stay out for is food and beer ;) I can hunt food but can't make beer :( lol. I do want to start making longer trips but work is a big commitment right now. I'm hoping this will slow down a bit next year.
