This week we had a custom split sprocket to fabricate. I'll give you some highlights of the build plus some tig welding shots and discussion.
I take a ride over to my buddy Joe's welding shop to get some help with the cutting needed on the sprocket, so we use his nice big Marvel Mark 3 vertical saw. That's one awesome saw that I wish I had!
Joe and I also talk a little about the origins of the name "Abom".
Check out Part 2 for some more machining and fab work.
Don't foget I now have a store front for Abom79 and Shop Life t-shirts, always available all the time.

Always great to have friends that can help you out with projects! I can't believe they told them to leave that dozer blade half fell off with that dorked up slot, some people always just want to get by rather than fix. I think that is the same style of saw as the one Tom has, maybe just newer?

This may have been mentioned about the thread wires. I keep a ball of clay a bit smaller than a golf ball in my threading drawer. I just stick the wires into the clay at the appropriate diameter. You still need every bit of both hands, but it's better than the 3 hands you needed before.

@therealspixycat

Suggestion for your TIG welding Adam: cut the welding rod in half so that the length of the rod is much shorter and therefore much easier to control. You run a much bigger risk of touching your tungsten when working with more instable longer welding rods. Try to learn to feed the rod with your tumb (there are several different techniques) so that you can lower the hand that feeds the rod much closer to your tungsten that will greatly improve the welding rod stability. Jody will be able to give you some tips on this.

Always nice to hear the story behind a nickname. Mine came up on a Thailand vacation with a group of people, Thomas was to complicated and there was already a Tom in this group so I became just T. and in a similar setting like yours a Thai girl said _"you are so fun T."_ and boom *FunT* was it, for pronouncing reasons I made it to *Funty* and my love for some comic creatures called _The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers_ made it to Fab Funty.

Hi Adam, I've been a viewing your videos for sometime now. I am a retired machine shop owner in Sydney Australia. When I watched you counterboring the holes in preparation for tapping I wondered why you didn't't use a long series twist drill to drill the tapping diameter and then the clearance hole for the socket head cap screws That would have saved setting it up again after sawing. Just a suggestion fro an old machinist.
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын
+Alan Aldrich I was thinking that when I make the cut that it would not be perfect, and it wasn't, and I'd have a tough time getting the holes aligned properly but it all worked out ok in the end. I could have drilled the holes then hand tapped them after the cut.

Beautiful work as always, of course the machining work is excellent as always, but a machinist that can weld as well? damn, I never let the machinist's anywhere near my welding machine because I always end up with a dozen burnt up tungsten's to sharpen and a weld bead to grind out and make pretty again, good work mate! I just got done watching the episode about the hydraulic shaft machining where you stick weld that tab's back onto the butt plate and you've got the hand for the stick as well, especially with those Excalibur rods, they put down a nice hydrogen free weld but love getting undercut on anything even slightly out of position, Try to get the boss to swing you some Lincoln Conarc 49C 7018 welding rods, not as good on the hydrogen content ( 3-4 microns per cubic cm of weld metal rather then 2 microns for the Excalibur's) which really doesn't matter for anyone but Exxon mobile engineer's (I welded plenty of pipe together on LNG plants for other oil companies with 49c's and they've hung on no problem) but are a much smoother rod to weld with!

hey abom I've been wondering about that tig welder. iv noticed that the shielding gas blows for a long time, after you terminate the arc. Is that done on purpose or is that the lowest setting it has. it seems like that would get expensive losing all that gas.
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын
You have a "post flow" control and set how many seconds you want the gas to continue. You need it for a couple seconds to protect the puddle while it solidifies.
@barri131981
@barri131981 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know that post flow is after the arc is terminated and is meant to shield the molten metal from atmospheric impurities. What I was meaning is it seems like your post flow is set for what seems to be 45 seconds. Everytime iv tig welded post flow is at most 6 to 10 seconds. Now don't get me wrong I'm not trolling or trying to be an ass clown. I was just wondering if you had it set that long for a particular purpose or reason. Thanks for the reply.

do you prefer a thumb wheel over a foot pedal on the tig welder?

Foot pedal control for me. Better for bench work.

Adam why when you weld details are not sparks fly, and when the weld details at the end of the video, there are sparks flying?

Somtimes that has to do with whats on the steel, like mill scale on hot rolled. I may not have had the sprocket cleaned up all the way.
