SNS 344: Monarch Coolant Sump Clean-out, Freddy Micro

We'll put the new Freddy Micro to work and clean out the Monarch coolant sump. It's been years since I last did it and as usuall, the coolant was toast and filled with tramp oil and chips. This was my first use of the Freddy it did not disappoint. It sucks up oil, coolant, water, chips, it gets it all. I can see how this machine is valuable and a time saver inn any shop that has machinery with coolant sumps.
After the removal of the coolant, I give the sump a good cleaning then top it off with a fresh batch of new soluble oil coolant.

I can give you a few tips Adam. I've operated tank tucks for 18 years. With a system very similar to your Freddy vac, just many many times larger scale. You want to make sure your hoses are completely unraveled. When your done sucking, with the valve open, walk the hose to the machine to make sure all your fluid is gone from the hose. Same thing when blowing it. I noticed how it was struggling to come up the clear hose because it was still hooked at the top. I don't know why they put the valve at the end of the hose on the evac line, instead of at the tank. Had they done that you would be able to evacuate the drain hose when it empties, so you don't have the fluid go back into the tank.

There is definitely something satisfying about vacuuming a vat of goo. If the coolant is filtered regularly it can be kept fresh indefinitely. This coolant was beyond saving but should be much better from now on if he also skims the surface oil. We have a Freddy Ecovac which is a big brother to the Micro+ Adam has.

Saw a thing a while back on how concrete bank vaults are made. In addition to typical rebar, etc., they'll often supplement the aggregate with old machine shop chips like these. They're ideal because they're all different sizes and types of metals and make drilling nearly impossible.

Let the hose lay a little flatter then your not blowin' it up through the loop hanging on the side of the machine. Or maybe put it up on that one cart that is like a small scissors lift and let gravity give you a hand. That's what I do when I help my Dad clean out his Machines at the shop he works in. Great video Adam !

I could smell that sump from here! I was out of engineering for 11 years between 2002 and 2013 being a police officer, but when I went back to aerospace, in the intervening years the coolants had undergone a sea change. The stuff I use now is more or less totally clear, and never gets and anaerobic bacteria or other nasties in it if left dormant for a while. The only reason it gets pumped out now is if there's a build up of grinding dust in the sump limiting it's capacity or it gets heavily mixed with tramp oil - but that's rare. While my machines lose a lot through evaporation and extraction in use (that's grinding!) so are always being topped up, they go some 2-3 years between complete pump outs now. Amazing stuff, and it NEVER starts to smell bad.

You need a young apprentice come in and do shop clean-up. That was one of my first machine shop duties. Learning from the bottom and moving up. Great experience and helps develop the fundamentals and all the parts of the machines. I started out a $1.10 an hour. Once a year the machines got washed down spic-span clean. Gave us pride when working on clean machines knowing we did it.

My machine shop experience started in 1966 so I was not surprised by what I saw. I can certainly see the value of a Freddy. Every small machine shop in the country should have one, regardless of the cost. The value of a clean machine goes far beyond just the appearance. Excellent video and demo. Art

I am a maintenance tech at a large shop. One of my monthly PM's is too clean out all the sumps for all the metal cutters. We have a Parker filtration pump that pulls the coolant into a 200 micron filter, then a 10 micron filter and then discharges into a holding tank. Once the coolant is out, I scape out all the chips and crap that accumulates. Then I return the clean coolant back to the sump and it's good to go. We were doing it every six months, but it's just too far gone and 10x harder. If you do it monthly it's not so bad. We do a complete coolant change out once a year. We use the Blazer semi-synthetic and add fungicide to keep it from getting rancid.

This is part of the hidden cost of machining that most do not understand! Cleaning the machine is part of EVERY job, be it daily like I have had to do when I was operating A 10 meter long Mill and some jobs were 3 cleans a day! It is part of the job at hand. Customer wants to bitch about cost then they can clean up the swarf/chips and save themselves a couple of bucks! It is called part of the cost of operating a Workshop! John, Australia.

Hey Adam, In the Shop I work in (Germany), we use a Systemcleaner for the coolant, that gets mixed into the old coolant and it kills bacteria and mould in it. Then the pump runs for a while, that everything gets "cleaned". After that we empty the sump and clean it with degreaser and Isopropanol to disinfect it, so that the fresh coolent won't get contaminated and that it lasts longer. Kind regards from Bavaria👍🏻

With this new idea of cleaning content you may end up doubling your subscriptions! Excellent idea on the glove change using the Freddy. Oh, this video should be shown to kids. In a world of entitled individuals trying to look glamorous, you are the example that EVERY job requires skill, experience and common sense, and there is satisfaction in EVERY job well done. So in essence this is glorious, I think. As always, congratulation and keep it up!

18:06 You could use a splash guard like the kind of thing they have on the nozzle at the gas pump. You’d probably have to make your own; it wouldn’t have to be pretty. You could take a piece of aluminum make the hole with a hole saw, and then TIG weld a couple of tabs on ether side of the hole to mount it to the nozzle with a hose clamp I think you’d be good. Added bonus it sounds like it’d make for a good video if you ask me. :)

Recommend you switch from buckets to poly or metal drums. One open top with a lid and a second closed top with bungs. 55-gallon size may be cheaper, but 40-gallon are easier to move and should be enough capacity. This will cut down on the splash back. Also a drum dolly would take care of hauling buckets by hand.
