Tobacco, particularly in the form of snuff, is important in interactions with ancestral spirits, who are believed to be responsible for their living kin’s well-being or tragedy. At cultural ceremonies like Ukuthethela/Bira (to ask for intercession and guidance), the ancestors are usually invoked or appeased, and tobacco is ideally served. Additionally, one can use snuff when they are communicating and communing with their ancestors in a process known as Ukuphahla (taken from the word Umphahlo). In this documentary we get to explore the uses of snuff with the dimensions of African spirituality and look at the different types of tobacco used in Zimbabwe namely; Gasa, Hondo, Ibute, Umdombo, Chambwa, and Chikwarimba. Our guests discuss the work of snuff within the context of Ndebele, Kalanga and Shona cultures respectively.

~ About Magriza Made Me Cook: » Magriza is slang for uGogo (Grandmother in isiNdebele) and the name of the show is derived from Prince's inspiration for falling in love with cooking; his grandmother. The goal of MMMC is to document and serve Africa's diverse food culture, one dish at a time. We believe that Africa has got unique meals that ought to be talked about, and most importantly, cooked consistently. We believe in the values of Ubuntu, Respect, Creativity and Minimalism.

The snuff sold on shops is not used for ancestors but mostly the traditional one on the side of Botswana. Mostly by the Zulus and kalangas who reside in Botswana. Which is dry and is dark in color. Looks black in color. The snuff sold in shops is mostly used as an opening to speak to the ancestors. Followed by the traditional one. Even Zambia, mostly rural areas they mostly use the traditional one. Noticed that on my visits.
