We're back again with the next "Doty, Take This Down" bonus track! This time we have a solo from the very talented Scott Matiland, who's been Grog in both of our musicals to date.
"So Big, So Small" was conceived very early on in the process of creating the show. While having Grog solo on a song originally written for a mom might not seem the most obvious choice, the lyrical content was what tied this one together. When Grog confronted Scanlan in Critical Role episode 100, Travis Willingham said:
"So, let me get this straight. You think you can go away for a year,
and come back, in a disguise, and apologize to this group, and that’s
going to be good enough for me? And then when I’m still pissed, you’re
going to give me a combo apology with Pike, and that’s going to be good
enough for me?
I’m still pissed. You came back in a costume. A costume! I’m not even
really that smart, it’s not hard to trick me.
And I’m a big guy, but you made me feel small."
Those last words really tied this part of the story into the emotional tone of this song. Hence, our version of this touching ballad was born.
