Hi Chad, All you did was run out of fuel. Its the sme thing when you change you fuel filter. Simple fix Do Not Try and Start! Just cycle your fuel pump 6 six times. No foot on brake, Push to start listen for the fuel pump to cycle six times when it is done cycling your fuel rail pressure is good and should start. This condition is no different that when you change your fuel filter. Hope this helps. Maybe see ya on the road. P.S. Ret. USCG Later Dave

I’m 4:44 in so far and when you tried to crank it after putting fuel in it, I literally got out of my seat to stop you LOL! Don’t EVER fire it up after running out of fuel. Press the start button a few times and let the fuel cycle through the truck - same process as replacing fuel filters. I really hope you don’t have a CP4 injection pump in that truck!

Someone else may have said this…but we carry a 5 gallon can of diesel fuel in the bed of our truck. You never know when you might need it, whether you estimated wrong or just find yourself in the middle of nowhere…or helping someone else. Every once in awhile, I empty it into the truck and fill it up again to get fresh fuel. It’s also a nice piece of mind to know I have an extra 50 miles (more or less) available in case I need it.

Just a tip Chad...just about all of our later built vehicles have two fuel pumps. One is a low pressure pump that moves the fuel to the high pressure fuel pump. There are many designs but the basics are the same so the last thing you want to do is to run it out of fuel because the fuel acts as a LUBRICANT & a COOLANT for the pumps. When you run out of fuel, the fuel pumps and lines are then full of air so when you fill the tank back up, all of that air has to get out of the system which is a cluster and the only pump to do that is the low pressure or "lift pump". There's no need to run the starter on the engine when this happens, simply turn on only the ignition or run and cycle off then on then off about 4 to 5 times to get the air out of the system. Once that is performed, the engine should start up. Others have mentioned this as well. Too bad there's no section in the book about this. Note, its not a good practice to run the tank down that low often...those lift pumps depend on the fuel to keep them cool and lubricated so when you are down to a few gallons, the pump is not submerged in fuel as much and begins to heat up thus reducing the life of the pump. So, when the tank is about 1/4 full, its best to fill up then vs. later. The same goes with the high pressure pump which is very expensive in parts and labor to replace. Its not worth it...fill up sooner vs. later and change the fuel filters more often than the book says as well as the engine and transmission and transfer case fluids. Lube is cheap...repairs are not. Don't forget the axle lube as well. Lucky for you this happened where it did vs. a couple of miles away.

After watching the out of fuel episode, and owing a F450 and being a master auto mechanic with Ford certification; you need to be aware that u have a Bosch cp 4.2 injector pump on your 6.7L diesel. It is extremely vulnerable to catastrophic failure which you have set in motion by running the truck out of fuel/lubrication. You will at some point experience continued damage to your high pressure injection pump, which will leave you stranded and cost over 8 grand to repair. To stop this from happening (and it will happen and leave u stranded), I recommend a DCR replacement injection pump kit from S and S diesel motor sport part # 6.7F-DCR. It costs us about 2000.00. I put one on my F450 and have no worries as it can sustain running dry or contaminated fuel. Also recommend changing your cold side turbine tube. The cold side turbine on your vehicle has extensive history of blowing apart and leaving plastic fragments all over the engine. Replacement for for turbine cold and hot side can be purchased from sinister diesel for about 750.00. If you are in or around the Texas Hill country near Blanco Tx stop by, and I can show this to ya and how to install. Questions call me 210 8436808, Mark.

Chad, your truck like most diesel trucks has 2 fuel pumps. The lift pump in the fuel tank delivers fuel through the fuel filters then to the CP3 engine driven high pressure fuel pump which boosts the pressure well into the thousands of psi for the high pressure fuel injection system. One risk of running out of fuel is the possibility of burning out the lift pump. It relys on fuel in the tank to keep it cool. When you're outside the truck and near the fuel tank, have someone turn the ignition key to the on position and listen for the hum of the lift pump. It should run for a couple seconds and then stop.

Same thing happened to me on a test drive of a brand-new truck! Back in January 2020, I test drove a 2019 F-350 Platinum DRW located at Greenway Ford in Orlando, Florida. The truck showed 20 miles until empty but stalled on a busy highway, Colonial Drive, directly across from the dealership. It was embarrassing because I was directing traffic around the disabled truck until someone from the dealership came to pick me up. The crazy thing is that I ended up getting a great deal, and I bought the truck! I now tell everyone I bought a brand-new truck that broke down on the test drive. My friends and family thought I lost my mind. I learned a valuable lesson from that experience, and as soon as the low fuel indicator comes on, I immediately fill up.

I'm pretty sure Ford is the only one that still uses them. However, Ram and GM really failed with the low pressure side, which made it worse for their applications and was the reason for many of their failures. Ford did a much better job in this respect, but they are still susceptible to failure, and especially when treated the way they were in this video. The best thing to do here is to replace the CP4 with a S&S DCR pump.

As a 22 F450 owner I would NOT want to run it dry like that, EVER. Our CP4 pumps NEED fuel to stay lubricated. That is so hard on them. I always carry two 5 gallon cans of Diesel in the back for emergency. Even if they are not always full just having my own clean cans that I know what is in them is so important. Friend of ours ran out once and a "helpful" guy dumped some nasty fuel in that took out his injectors not too much farther down the road. Then he had a bigger problem. We tow around a 397 fulltime.

We have a rule to start looking for fuel at 1/2 a tank and we carry 10 gallons of diesel on the rack of the camper especially on Western trips. There are roads out there where there are no fuel stations for 150 miles (El Paso to Carlsbad US 62). Diesels do not like to run out of fuel and I know my truck could have $5000 damage easily. If a station does not accept my discount cards, I pay extra.

Les Combes is a great HH stop. We usually make it a stop on our way to Arizona for for the winter. Easy in and out with plenty of wide open level parking. Food and beverages are wonderful.

About 10 or 12 years ago, we were heading to a family reunion on Possum Kingdom Lake. I was driving a diesel Ford Excursion pulling a travel trailer with a wave runner behind it. I planned on filling up as we got closer to the lake but there was no where t fill up on the rural route we took. There was a station at the campground we were staying at so I thought I would make it with the miles to empty. I ran out of diesel with the campground in sight and was able to coast to the diesel pumps with all I had in tow. That’ll never happen again.

The "remaining range" sensor on the Super Duty trucks must have been made by the same people who make black water tank level sensors. When I first got my F350, I thought I could make it home a couple of miles when it said I had 13 miles remaining. Ran out of fuel. Fortunately, Ford's roadside assistance came to the rescue. A couple of years later, got caught in Kansas while towing, and the towns and fuel stations were 50 miles apart. Started looking for a station that we could fit into when the range indicated was 100 miles. I found one when it indicated 20 miles remaining, the "low fuel pressure" alarm came on just as I got to the end of the freeway exit, and the engine died just as we made it to the pump. The P087 code is a transitory code, and clears after a few startup cycles.

Easy for me to say you should know better! Especially after you've put so many miles on the road over the years, but it happens to most of us sooner or later. Really nice to see folks trying to help. Also interesting to know you needed more than a couple gallons to get it fired up again. Wishing you safe travels and no more drama.

Same thing happened to us except we were stuck on the freeway. You can’t trust the gauge regarding total miles left while towing. Mine showed 50 and my truck died. I realized when towing the gauge doesn’t calculate for that. Also don’t try to start it after it stalls or as soon as you put the fuel in. Check your manual on how to turn on your fuel pump. I have a Ram so it would be different. Wait for about a minute or 2 then try to start it. Love your videos. I love the experience videos.

Look in the settings on your dash and you can change the way it calculates the distance to empty. Or at least on the older Fords you can. I keep mine on tow mode for distance to empty.

I use to own a new 2007 Fleetwood Gearbox toyhauler. It was a small one but I was able to put both of our Harley’s in it. The first trip we made in it was from Leavenworth Kansas to La Grange Wyoming. I was pulling it with a 1999 Dodge Ram with a 360 cu in engine. I got 2.2 mpg on that entire trip! 65 miles to a full tank of gas! I normally got around 24 mpg without the trailer. That was the longest 615 mile trip each way! Ten tanks of gas each way!

Great video and log of your long trip. I noticed you struggle on the deck with the wind. I open the patio door and drape the cable over the door and wrap in through and around the ramp cable to hold the deck screen and the door in place. Works great, especially when loading/unloading.

I have a similar size 5thwheel, New Horizons Majestic and a 2020 F450 same color as yours . When we travel in unfamiliar areas I carry a couple of 5gallon can of diesel just in case . I think you should do the same start up procedure as when changing fuel filter . You just cycle on off about 6-8 times with out trying to start it . That will purge air out of the lines before trying to start .

Don't believe the fuel miles remaining when driving I-10 west of San Antonio all the way to the California border. Head winds will get you every time. There are no external "tells" that you are driving in a steady 20mph headwind (no trees to blow around). Meanwhile the truck is burning fuel like you are going 80 mph. The only real indicator is the turbo boost gauge.

This was my fear as I made my first cross country full time. I used the rv life app to help identify when I would run out of fuel. I was expecting 12mpg with my 40fter but it turned out to be closer to 7mpg avg. I was able to update the app with my fuel economy and found I would of been cutting it way to close to empty at many stops. I was thankful for the app! I used your code when I setup my rv life account thanks for the discount!

Chad!, bro. NEVER run a Ford 6.7 diesel out of fuel. The CP4 injection pump doesn't like it lol. If you do accidentally run out of fuel, don't crank the engine when you put the fuel in, hit the switch and let the low pressure fuel pump prime the system back. Prime it back at least 10 times. Safe travels!
