The trance-like effect of the drums and underlying melodies, and Robert Plants vocals (along with the fantasy/exotic lyrics) just reels you in. I can get lost in the song. Then the soaring peaks and cymbal crashes and long notes from Plant creates a feeling of exhilaration. They are one of the greatest bands ever, and my personal favorite.

Yes. Guitar is tuned in DADGAD. Drums played 4/4, while the rest play 3/4.

This song does a trick that you often see in prog rock and fusion. The music is in 3/4, like a waltz. The drums are in 4/4. They overlap each other to make a complete 12/4 pattern. That’s why sometimes it feels like the snare is on the downbeat. This is why it feels different without being overtly “prog rock.” Kinda nerdy but cool.

@@TylerAtkins64 Led Zeppelin did this a few times over the years. By doing that with the beat they create this amazing ponderous almost dragging feel to the song. Which is exactly what it needed.

Robert Plant once confessed in an interview some years later that while Stairway to Heaven was by far their most popular song his own favorite in their extensive library was Kashmir. It is by far my favorite too.

its mine family's fav zepplin song too as my grandpa was one of the indian guy with them who practices transdental medition with them and later they'll went to kashmir as well to see one old yogi where they camped in leh and did some mushrooms in form of Somrass tea. he has so many pictures in his albums

That’s probably because Robert was sick to death of singing Stairway all the time. I would love these two to react to In My Time of Dying - the slide guitar and vocals are unrivalled

I'd agree with that statement. Stairway's style was more of a novelty for Zepplin. This was much more blues & true to their style. Ranks up there with Whole Lotta Love & Rock n Roll with their best.

Sounds a bit like sensory dysphoria at play in her brain. Children when they are very, very young actually see sound as disruptions in their visual field, so it's absolutely possible for the brain to mix things up.

What makes these videos so entertaining is how Lex instinctively gets it with every song and has such an open enthusiastic appreciation for different types of music while Brad seems completely puzzled and unimpressed with everything. Watching him try to wrap his head around The Doors is hysterical. Also, I'm wondering if he'll ever realize that not every song has a specific literal meaning

I think Led Zeppelin possesses Lex's very soul every time she and Brad do a reaction, which is something that happens to a lot of people. But cut Brad some slack; you can't expect everyone to get it. I've tried with my wife for years and she just plugs up her ears and tells me how much her brother loves them and that I should go hang out with him to listen.

i agree. the more i watch these two, the more I think Brad is trying to overthink **art**. I say this as someone who used to have the same problem. I am a scientist, by training, so when I was younger, music needed to "make sense" to me. Later, I decided to embrace the other half of life : the non-math, the non-science....more magic. I started collecting art. Sampling music from other countries and languages - bought local artist CDs while I was in Europe. I started attending contemporary dance shows. My goal was to let go and see what i liked, not what I understood. It has been an eye-opening journey. I hope Brad can eventually see past the logic. If not, doesnt really matter. to anyone. at least he's enjoying himself.

You took the words right out of my mind. Lex is clearly absorbed in the music, appreciates and enjoys the musical nuances... Brad looks completely hypnotized by reading the lyrics, too transfixed by the words to even really experience the music, it seems... it is incomprehensible to me why anybody would want to experience new music by reading along and ahead with the lyrics, but to each their own I guess. But yeah he usually looks puzzled by lyrics that are obviously meant to be poetical and open to the interpretations of each listener... which is great, there's nothing wrong with finding the lyrics interesting, but it's all the more reason not to analyze the lyrics to death above all the other aspects of the music.

@@NondescriptMammal 100% agree...i, too, never considered reading lyrics while listening to music. it just never crossed my mind. maybe it's a generational thing. as a child of the 70s lyrics werent really an option if you only heard songs on the radio and didnt buy the album/cassette.....and even if you did, not all of them had lyrics. once the internet got off the ground, on of my first searches was the lyrics for a Jackson Brown song and the lyrics for Rainbow Connection (I couldnt remember the song Kermit sang in the Movie)

LZ was comprised of four of the most gifted musicians in rock history. The "orchestra" that you hear was actually just John Paul Jones on a synthesizer; amazing performance.

@@OriginalGhost So when they performed this Song Live on stage at Kenworth for instance. There is a orchestra behind them playing with them. This sound comes from Four People on stage creating Music. No violins,no orchestra at that time. Now did they an orchestra play this absolutely. After the fact. It took a whole orchestra to recreate that magic that was made by Led Zeppelin.

There's a musical reason that it sounds different. The bass/vocals/guitar are on 3/4 time while the drums are on 4/4 time, so they only sync up every 12 measures. It creates a very dramatic effect to the song. This song is a rock anthem for a reason.

Of course, it can simply be viewed as a syncopated rhythm in plain old 2/4 or 4/4. Not as difficult or unusual as everybody seems to making it out to be here, but still 100% mesmerizing, powerful, and effective. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

John Paul Jones, the bands bassist, was a classically trained musician who brought a lot to their sound despite being the least well known member of the band.

Not to mention he had about half a dozen album production under his belt when they formed....as did Paige. Between the two of them, they had deep knowledge of how to get the sound they wanted onto tape. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. all recorded and produced their own music at some point in their career and that's what separates their catalogs from many others.

My FAVORITE song of all time from my FAVORITE band of all time! To really get into this song play it again but first think about this: Robert Plant and Jimmy Page wrote this while driving through Morocco. It’s like a dream. Close your eyes and just let it flow. No drugs necessary!

Lex, you are timeless and priceless in your sensitivities and acceptance of the greatest, most creative and talented rock band ever. The bassist, John Paul Jones, wrote and composed the orchestral groundwork, but each of the 4 members of Zeppelin, display their almost unearthly talents that just mesh together there without compromising to get a certain sound. Not even the Beatles could match them in Performance and talent.

I have been listening to this song going on 50 years and it never would have crossed my mind to think...."they hit you with all this spice, and then every once is a while, a little sour cream to cool you down". It's a brilliant way to see this song, she is so intuitive.

"Battle of Evermore" is another "different" one for them. It's also the only time they used a guest vocalist for the album version.

Jimmy picked up Jonesy's mandolin, started plucking at it, and taught himself how to play while writing, "Battle of Evermore". His mandolin solo gives me chills every time.

A guest honored with her own Zep glyph on the album, Sandy Denny. Sandy had an incredible voice perfect for the folk rock going on at the same time. Not well known in US but treasured in UK and those familiar with her. Instead of the usual of her's mostly know in US by covers, try John the Gun, Wretched Wilbur, Fortheringay (about Mary Queen of Scots), Tamlin, and Banks of the Nile. (Her band was very disciplined on Banks of the Nile letting her tone and inflection come through so spot on it gives chills.) Sang with Strawbs, Fairport Convention, and her own Fotheringay. Stories for Brad and music for Lex.

Well ... Kashmir has tropical deciduous forests, but even more, it has temperate forests of oaks and pines, exotic plants, alpine meadows and snow capped mountains. If you want deserts with camels in India, you should go to the Thar desert in the Rajasthan state. The Kashmir song is not supposed to represent at all a Middle Eastern or desert area.It's supposed to represent a sort of Asian 'Shangri-la' green paradise in a valley hidden somewhere in the high mountains.

I would say it is probably Buddy Rich. John, though was in the conversation and an integral part of the greatest rock and roll band ever. Pert, Baker and Moon, all have their advocates. I'm sure their are a few drummers today that will begin to get some attention as their contributions are studied. I like Barry Kerch of Shinedown, but I am no expert. Maybe the drummers out there could chime in on that one.

Physical Graffiti was such an amazing album. So many great and varied songs. With Kashmir and Trampled Underfoot they really reached beyond their usual formulae of blues based rock and In My Time Of Dying was a complete masterpiece even if they stole some old blues songs to get there.

I saw them in concert back in 1972 after I got out of service. They played this and about all their songs. Was so wild because they sounded the same live as they did in studio recordings. One the best concerts I've ever been to and I have seen A LOT of them.🤗

Been listening to the mighty Zepp since I was a kid (I’m 61 now). They’re the greatest band of all time. GREATEST! There are other bands I like, but nothing compares! I was too up f to see them in the 70’s, but I got to see Page/Plant in October of 95’ (I was 32) and I literally cried when they came on stage. They didn’t disappoint! I love Robert Plant and he’s the best singer ever

The reason it sounds all over the place but it works is John Bonham's drums here are played in 4/4 time. But the string arrangement is in 3/4 time. meaning they only synch up on ever 12th beat

they're amazing, with great songs, i just don't think they have the consistency of some of the other greats. Beatles made about 5 albums of quality material FRONT-TO-BACK near the end of their career. With Led Zepp i find myself skipping tracks. They're still legends though.

This is my favorite Zeppelin song and one of my all time favorites period. The soundscape can get so complex, the drums are amazing, and then add Robert Plant's vocals on top and it's just beautiful. Kashmir the place is in the middle east so it has that kind of a feel to it and I just love when orchestras and rock mixes and it does so perfectly in this song. I could play this on a loop and, even though it's like 8 minutes long, I would never get tired of it. Every time I listen to it I hear something new.

To me one thing that made Zeppelin so great, is the fact none of their songs sounded alike at all. You knew it was Zeppelin but hardly ever confused one song with the other. They were masters of different sounds, just my opinion.

That sour cream reference at the end was actually the most perfect way to explain Kashmir, and what they did to make this song great. Whether you are a professional musician or a Mixing engineer, you would really love what she said. That's what everyone has been trying to accomplish since this came out 40 something years ago. Insightful reaction, guys!! They had travelled to Mumbai the year before (1972) and they had worked with various Indian musicians that later translated to the Eastern flavor of this track. Their most Epic tune IMO. Not necessarily my favorite one, but certainly the most EPIC. Their version of this song at their one gig 2007 reunion was amazing, with Bonzo's son on drums. Worth checking out. Cheers!

That riff is often used at various sporting events, as Lex said, it sounds like going into battle. Led Zeppelin’s music is never the same twice, listen to Dazed and Confused, Rain Song and Since I’ve been Lovin’ You, all completely different. They ARE very blues influenced though.

I got this album 'Physical Graffiti' on 14th May 1975 for my 17th birthday. It was a present from my girlfriend Janine. Great album, in fact the last of their truly classic albums. You should try 'Trampled Underfoot' from this album, it's pure funk with very suggestive lyrics.

Led Zeppelin had a way of making you feel just what inspired the song, even without the lyrics. Geniuses at their respective crafts, and one of the few bands who were truly driven by the drums. The things Bonham did have never been equaled, IMO.

This song has always conjured images for me of gathering storm clouds or a gathering enemy army on the horizon. Tense and foreboding, and they use the middle eastern minor scales with great effect. Could easily be backdrop for the crusades or a gathering sand storm. Either way, it's epic.

Here's a neat tidbit that I found online about the instruments on this and other Zep songs "John Paul Jones used a Mellotron for a lot of Led Zeppelin’s recordings. Basically it is an early form of a sampler. A mellotron is a keyboard instrument, that uses magnetic tape for it.s sound bank. Each key has a magnetic tap head, and the tape uses prerecorded sounds like a string section for example."

This is an amazing song to watch them perform live. NFL is well know for playing Zeppelin songs. Read about it in the newspaper a long time ago... there was supposedly a scientific reason for it, but it also had to do with $.

"This song is orchestral" (watches John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and Jimmy Page grinning wickedly and giving each other high fives) Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time. They could do anything with anything to make a sound and make it sound great. That is why they are rock gods! They set a mood in their songs, and with "Kashmir", the beat sound is like heavy footsteps through sand dunes, while the "orchestral" sound is like sand flowing away from those heavy footsteps. You get a sense of weight from each of those footsteps, but you aren't left exhausted from the journey at all. It's a brilliant song, and not quite as complex as it seems, and Jimmy Page showed The Edge, and Jack White in a video I believe called "It Might Get Loud" where he showed he showed the chords to the song.

The song took 3 years to complete and all members of the band consider Kashmir to be their crowning achievement. Bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones composed the orchestral part, horns and strings, and session musicians were brought in to perform. Also, Jones used a Mellotron for the organ parts which give off a Middle Eastern vibe as Kashmir itself is a region of Northern India.

@@steverobinson8214 this is MUCH harder. There's a lot of subtle swings on the kick pedal, lots of double and even triple kicks, that some professional drummers still doubt Bonzo played without echo or overdubs. Of course he played it raw.

Brad is out of his mind. The NFL never used this. Bonham’s time signatures change throughout the song which gives it such a funky groove.

Actually they don't. It's just rather basic 4/4 throughout on the drums, with signature genius fills of course. But the riff is in 3/4. So four sets of two riffs catch up with three bars on the drums each time. 3x4 = 4x3. The concept is called a polymeter.

Puff Daddy sampled it in "Come With Me" so that might be where he heard it. It was also in Fast Times at Ridgemont HIgh but I don't think they ever licensed it for commercial use.

Tens of thousands of human beings were conceived when this song was in social currency. Not only that, but it has lasted so long in the musical zeitgeist, that thousands are still conceived to it every year. This is THE horizontal bop of the 70s.
