Again Angel as a show this time looks at stalking and obsession in I Fall To Pieces. An interesting take on it here to the extreme with the evil Doctor trying to use coercive control to feed his obsession by detaching his body parts. Cordelia trying to get Angel to start charging clients adds some comic relief, with the first cheque at the end being gleefully accepted by Cordelia and Doyle. Another great bit of writing with social comment on a very serious issue that affects a lot of people. Interestingly enough the evil Doctor here is the same actor that played D'Hoffryn in BTVS who we first saw in Dopplegangland S3 of BTVS, he often appeared in the show. This is very much in the style of an X-Files episode like Squeeze, where Tooms was able to manipulate his body in all sorts of contortions. A lot of reactors who begin to watch Angel just says it's not as good as BTVS, but I think Angel is a brilliant show in its right.

Joss loves Andy Umberger and cast him in Buffy, Angel and Firefly. He was D'Hoffryn, the demon Anya used to work for.

Dr. Pieces. This one is unusual in that the job came from a vision, yet they bill her for payment as well. Of course, they needed to get their business running, but usually, the people seen in visions are not the paying clients.

The idea that we don't use most of brains was a popular theory at the time. Got to remember that airing-wise and in-universe the date is 1999.
@ernesthakey33962 ай бұрын
Yep. Turns out to be a myth, pretty much.
@colej.banning24192 ай бұрын
It remains a persistent myth even today, but it had been thoroughly debunked long before this episode was written.
@Buffy8Fan2 ай бұрын
@@colej.banning2419 Exactly. But the point of the comment was at that time was when said theory/myth was heavily debated in the public.
@ernesthakey33962 ай бұрын
@@colej.banning2419 I think it remains persistent partly because so many people especially on social media seem intent on proving they have no common sense or ability to think rationally. The spread of conspiracy theories, the growing disregard for science in favor of weird ideas, the willingness to believe lies that confirm existing biases and beliefs and to ignore anything that contradicts those lies and misinformation... We may use most of our brains, but there's no guarantee we use them well, sadly. Heck, even smart folks may spend hours discussing media that is 20 years old, while the world outside gets closer and closer to totally insane...heh. 😉

@@Buffy8Fan I don't remember it being heavily debated so much as credulously repeated, much as it still is today.

Andy Umberger, the Ronald Meltzer guy was in the videogame LA Noire.

Some people in the past couple of Buffy/Angel videos have been arguing and insulting each other in comments. I let it go for a while because I believe they were isolated incidents but a few people keep reappearing in the arguments and I won't tolerate it. This is a place to comment about the video, not insult and squabble amongst yourselves and I won't tolerate it any longer. Having a discussion is very easy without arguments. The next time I see an argument that resolved in insulting each other, you will get a warning before you are banned. I appreciate everyone's consideration to remain civil when commenting on other people's comments. I will repeat this message in next week's episode, but I don't want this to happen again.

While the old idea that we don't use most of our brains IS indeed bullshit, it wasn't quite so well known to be bullshit at the time :P Also, while debunked, some state it a little TOO strongly that we operate our brains at full efficiency. Personally, I like the idea of exploring human cognition more deeply and theorising how we might improve ourselves :P (I love any SFF exploration of metahumanism or transhumanism) Think of it like this: All of our brain is used, and all of it has had SOME evolutionary advantage (not necessarily a survival advantage, as SOME evolutionary pressures are ACTUALLY detrimental. Think of sexual display features in many animals. They're quite literally harmful to the individual, and yet are used to display healthy by expressing that the individual can survive with disadvantage... and therefore is selected for. Evolution is a simple mechanic with extremely complicated implications :P) That doesn't mean it is completely efficient, or that we couldn't POTENTIALLY utilise CURRENTLY dormant areas of the brain for other uses. Hell, we're STILL debating whether free will exists at all, and what consciousness really is. Like it or not, we're limited beings attempting to explore reality through VERY limited senses. So: while the assertion we only use 10% of our brains us nonsense, the idea we could increase the efficiency of our brains to utilise more of its neurons for processing would seem to me perfectly reasonable. This is PROBABLY one of the worst episodes. I know that some like it for its darker theme and exploration of a VERY real issue faced by many women at some point in their lives.
