I was in a band playing the clubs in Northern England in the early seventies. We were playing a gig at a large Workingmans Club in Bradford, which happened to be the home base for Smokie. The band walked in during a break and asked if they could use our gear for an in impromptu show. They walked on stage, picked up our instruments and sound gear and proceeded to play three songs like they were a jukebox, as an aspiring musician I was truly impressed. Great guys to hang out with as well. ✌️

What a pleasant surprise to listen to Smokie on your channel. They were really huge in South Africa in the 1070's. ABBA, Smokie and Boney M dominated the singles charts. Smokie visited South Africa many times over the years, always to sold out concert halls.

This song was co-written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. They wrote songs like Ballroom Blitz and Little Willy by Sweet. They wrote songs for Suzi Quatro. They wrote Kiss You All Over by Exile and Mickey by Toni Basil. Mike Chapman produced several Blondie albums including Parallel Lines.

They are a great underrated band, with a great combination, of a tremendous lead singer Chris Norman, and fantastic background vocals! Living Next Door To Alice, If You Think You Know How to Love Me, Mexican Girl, I'll Meet You at Midnight, A Few Dollars More, San Francisco Bay, What Can I Do, and Belinda, are all super songs, especially Living Next Door to Alice.

Smokies is one of those bands produced by the great Michael Chapman. He also wrote a lot of the songs for both of these bands ad well ad a group called Racey. He went on to produce Blondie and Pat Benetar's first album and taught Neil Giraldo how to produce her himself. Truly one of the greats.

Jay and Amber, great choice!!!! Definitely you should listen to "I'll meet you at midnight" and " Living next door to Alice" from Smokie. Be careful from choosing a later remix ( not made by Smokie) of "Living next door to Alice" where they have some cursing words after the chorus. If you enjoy soft rock or country rock they have a large repertoire of beautiful tunes.

Living Next Door To Alice!! Very poppy for this band but the story they tell there will make you cry. Smokie were out there on the Glam Rock/Power Pop scene together with your mentioned Suzie Quatro, Marc Bolan's T Rex, and Sweet - David Bowie was more arty but at that time was totally fitting in the scene with Hunky Dory or Ziggy Stardust. Slade is another band that came out from this scene - you definitely have to try them out!

Love Smokie, Chris has a great voice. Something unusual in the music business, Chris and his wife Linda have been married 53 years. He was once asked in an interview about why he has never been seen with other women (like rock stars do) and his reply was why go out for a hamburger when you have a steak at home. Such a great guy. You should definitely check out some of Chris' solo songs (he's done loads) a personal favourite is red hot screaming love.
