She is 42 and still not well known, but she is the best female vocalist on the planet. She does not wish to be famous or rich. She is a Christian singer and loves to sing to help others not be sad. She sings for God. Many vocal coaches who have found her, now use these videos to teach their singing students, saying, this is how you do it. We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Her name is pronounced ‘so yang’ & in my humble opinion this is somewhere in the middle on the amazingness of sohyang’s vocal abilities scale, which probably give you some idea of just how awesome she is. Not only is she an amazing singer but a very talented arranger too & is responsible for the arrangement of all the songs she performs, a talent that will obviously be more apparent when she has rearranged a song that you are already familiar with. Obviously she has amazing vocals but unlike many other Asian artists she speaks pretty good English so she doesn’t have an obvious accent when singing in English, so never be put off listening to her sing in her native Korean because one of the other things she is known for is her ability to emote & tell a story through the song,regardless of the viewer understanding the lyrics. Having said that, if you choose to watch her perform a song in Korean or alternating between English & Korean in a song like she sometimes does, I suggest that you try & watch it on Vimeo because they always provide subtitles, which can only add to an already ‘mind blowing’ performance but she regularly has me in tears even when I haven’t a clue what she’s singing about. Her amazing technique allows her to turn her hand to literally any genre, rock,pop,blues/jazz,obviously the power ballads & she can also be seen rapping on a song called ‘day day’ but her heart is in gospel & she often incorporates a gospel like vibe sound in to songs that aren’t usually associated with that genre, but only if the song will allow for it & it feels natural, she never just does it because she can & she only does it to enhance the song, never to make it worse, she is far too talented & respectful to spoil somebody else’s good work. I can't understand why people whose native language is English have trouble with a name written "Sohyang" - it's really not that difficult unless English is your problem. It's just "yang" (rhymes with long) with the "a" pronounced like the "a" in "father" and an "h" in the front of it. Only a problem if one is too lazy to try.
