Hi, I'm Alyssa and I'm a student pilot with (as of the date this is being posted) about 40 hours of combined dual and solo flight. This past week I bought a 1968 Piper Cherokee 180D (PA-28-180) to complete my training in and to be my aircraft for the foreseeable future.
Got lots of people asking about the plane, wanting to see a walk around, wanting to understand how I chose this plane. So I cover all of that here!!

Good choice, I owned a 1968 Cherokee 180 in the 90's, N5309L, they are great starter aircraft, lots of power, just make sure the wing spar AD has been done !
@AlyssaM_InfoSec
@AlyssaM_InfoSec Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm loving it so far. Spar A/D is done, only requires inspection panels and visual inspections at this point since the plane is at about 4700 TT and was only ever used for Part 91 flight. (i.e. exceptionally low factored service hours).

Congratulations! I did the same thing a year ago... i.e. bought a plane before I had my ppc! Bought a 1973 177B Cardinal for the same reasons. Low enough for handicapped wife to get in, no strut in the way, wide interior, long range tanks, and low hours... lucked out by only waiting a month for a hangar to become available!

Awesome! Warning...Its likely that non-pilot friends that said they would fly with you will now quietly back down now that you can make it a reality. 4 in a 180 is a stretch. Fly with your CFI at gross weight to get accustomed to the feel before loading up pax.
@user-jh5fm7ci6o
@user-jh5fm7ci6o 2 ай бұрын
Agree. You never want to fly close to weight. Have some sort of padding on your weight and balance. Also, good idea to have the CFI fly with you on a loaded up airplane.

It was great!! Like I said, been catching up on all the past episodes and loving them. And yeah, sadly the flight school's planes have been worked hard and are not attractive options for renting for longer trips (least of all anything overnight). No real good flight club options in my area either, so plane ownership ended up being the best option. Still trying to figure out how to join that discord BTW. Looks like I have to be a patreon supporter for Brian in order to join the discord?

Congratulations! What an awesome little airplane. You just took it to the next level for sure! I can't wait to see what you do with this beautiful machine. My wife and I are seriously talking about doing the same. As you...here in Savannah, Ga, hangar space is an issue. Surrounding airports may be an option? Either way, I'm at the finish line for my PPL and onward to the rest of the ratings to make this my "twilight" career. I'm 52 and made the commitment to follow my passions and dreams!; I gave up a 25 year career to do this full time. I'm excited for you and your new family member. Stay safe. See ya around the "Student pilot community" too.

Thank you so much!! Yeah it took me 45 years to finally do the thing. I'm not changing careers, it's just an enjoyable hobby for me, but being a pilot is something I dreamed of since I was little and the planes from our local airport would fly their patterns over our house. I remember a few times getting alarmed when they would do power-off 180s (of course I didn't know that's what it was at the time) right overhead.

The 180 is a great plane that flies well. This was the same model that I first flew after training in a 172 and I loved the way it felt in the air by comparison. Since this is a 60s model, keep a very close eye on the wing spar for any signs of corrosion. The inspection panels are easy to access and you should look up some example photos of how to spot anything. Congrats on your purchase!

nice cherokee and congrats..but as far as the PA 28 vs C172 comparison a better vs would be a PA 28-150/160 .where the Cessna has a slight edge in speed/useful load and range...pop up to the 172SP and comparable Archer where the speeds are comparable..the Cessna about 200 fpm better climb but the Piper has a 200 lb edge on useful load....when it comes down to it is where we trade off for preferences and mission....good luck and safe flying
@AlyssaM_InfoSec
@AlyssaM_InfoSec 4 ай бұрын
Thanks, and yeah to be clear, my comparisons to the 172 was not about which is better, but which is better for my mission. I trained in 172N models. That includes my budget. A 172SP would have cost $200-300K more than what this plane cost me at the time. No hatred of the Skyhawk here (although I will tease my high-wing siblings about putting the wings on the wrong side of the airplane), but in my case that dip in useful load along with the extra cost would both have been non-starters :)

Congratulations! I am not a pilot, but I grew up with a best friend whose dad was an American Airlines pilot. When his son - my friend - got his pilot's license at age 16, they ordered a brand new Cherokee Arrow 200 with retractable landing gear. They went to Florida to watch it being built and to fly it home. I got to spend many hours flying with them in that wonderful airplane. This was about 1969, so very close to the same model year as yours. Great memories for me, and I'm sure many great memories to be made in the future for you. Stay safe!

Total cost (purchase price, inspection, escrow, taxes, registration fees, first year insurance, etc.) it's probably right around $100K

Sweet, must feel nice its sitting there waiting for whenever you want to go. Can you do some kind of share deal from a local school or whatever? Im planning on getting the Piper Arrow III, well, in MFS2020, ya, sim flying only lol..... I'll sell you a hamburger for $100! no problem. PS: Clean your windows. Lol, your radio set looks like something Marconi used haha. Cheers!

LOL yeah still need to do a full detail job on her, and heck those radios are new compared to what was in there new or what I have in the C172's I've been flying. As far as a lease-back to the school, I'd have had to set that up before hand. It would violate the terms of my financing at this point.

Owning your aircraft will save you more time than renting a PA-180
@AlyssaM_InfoSec

IDK if it will actually save me money in the long run, I had been renting a Cessna 172 for about $110/hr wet. This one burns more fuel, about $70-80/hour so when you factor in the fixed and variable costs of ownership, I still think renting would be cheaper. However, I'm paying for the convenience of being able to fly whenever the idea hits and the weather is good rather than needing the FBO to be open and having to schedule weeks in advance. Also nice not having to carry all of my stuff in a flight bag when I can leave headsets and other things in the plane.

Yes with fuel I’d rather go to the self service tanks that few airports have in my area and the last time I rented a 172 SP was years ago and when I jumped from the high wing to the low wing Hersey Bar PA-180 Cherokee it was getting used to not seeing aircraft below me so I’m back in the High wing 170 Taildragger . VFR weather conditions are great when the winds are low and the skies are the limits and remember altitude is my friend always. Happy Flights to come

Nice. What was your buying process? Did you use a broker?
@AlyssaM_InfoSec
@AlyssaM_InfoSec Жыл бұрын
I did not use a broker. I found the plane on Trade-A-Plane and it was local. It checked all my boxes as far as useful load, engine and total time, and generally appearing to be well cared for. Was also very cool that it was pretty local to me so I was able to go on a test flight with the seller. I worked with AOPA finance and their chosen Escrow/Title company to handle those pieces. Worked with an aircraft insurance broker to get the best deal (cost, coverage, and terms), and found a local A&P through a FB group who did my pre-buy. Escrow/Title company and Finance company worked together to coordinate much of the process.

@@AlyssaM_InfoSec Thanks for the reply. Very cool that you were able to find a good fit in your area. How did you find the aircraft insurance broker? AOPA, internet/directory searches, FB groups, something else?

Nice plane! Huge increases in Insurance costs has become one of the biggest obstacles to purchasing for lots of folks. Would you care to mention the details, or is it just too painful to talk about?
