If you ever play this again, I'd recommend turning off the remastered graphics! It'll make it a little more crisp, because the remastered graphics cover up the original pixel art.

Nah, there's no objective/waypoint, not because you're just supposed to know, but because you're supposed to explore, examine, and put two and two together in a somewhat natural way. Nowadays most games have a lot of systems to make it "easier" to progress, but that also takes away from the experience of progress. It's basically the difference between getting on a horse and riding it, and getting on a horse and riding it while having a guide telling you where to go. Find your own way, get invested, and the experience will be all the richer for it. 👍

Boy, you weren't even a twinkle in your mother's eye when this came out. Yeah, it's the best rpg ever made, it gets to the point and has repayability in spades. These days, they'd release the endings as dlc, and it would end at magus. Devs these days are trash and I'd sacrifice a pretty penny for something as good. Pity we can't go back to the good old days... when gamers made the games and weren't handcuffed.
