A patch released just a couple days ago that dramatically improves the framerate in the open world, so I think it's safe to say it was never a design choice and was always just ToyBox being ToyBox. I noticed a lot of people trying to claim that the bad FPS was an inherent part of Deadly Premonition when it was never an issue in the original 360 version, just the ports ToyBox handled. I think framerate could be used to convey ideas or emulate a certain style like you said, but nothing about this game felt like it was trying to emulate old video games to me and the lack of consistency across the board showed it was never a stylistic choice. The open world sections legit gave me a headache a few times and I'd have to stop playing for a bit.

But ThorHighHeels don't give a fuck because Anarchism. The point isn't that the bad frame rate is part of the aesthetic, the point is that issues like that shouldn't be a factor in enjoying games like this.
@noahmckay1599
@noahmckay1599 4 жыл бұрын
@DrMecha Isn't that kind of a contradiction? You're basically saying a person should ingore the bad framerate and that it shouldn't be a factor when enjoying this game when clearly for a lot of people can't enjoy this game because the bad framerate makes them feel ill. I even think you might misundering his point in the video which that he is saying that gameplay should serve everything else and not that everything else should be used to serve gameplay. Since framerate is a part of gameplay then that means a framerate that doesn't function as it is supposed to which is this framerate isn't because they released a patch to fix the framerate implying that the framerate wasn't to be suppose to be that low in the first place. Thor was able to enjoy it was because he is used to be framerates and it doesn't bother him as much. So basically what you're doing is ingoring parts of Thor's agrument and misrepresenting it so that it becomes "framerate shouldn't be a factor in enjoying this game" when the agrument was "framerate shouldn't be only factor in enjoying this game."

Thank you for talking about this game! When I went to my local GameStop the man over the counter was "I've been waiting for you." To which I replied "How so ?" "You are the only person who pre-ordered this game so I put next to the cash register because I wanted to see what you looked like." I have a bit of a funny relationship because many times I'm the only person who orders games like this. When the 25th Ward came out I had a DP esque situation when the manager called out his employee all like "Hey it's that guy." To which a dude poked his head from the back and was like "Hey it's that guy wait a second let me get (random name)." After feeling like a prized poodle i realized, I am known as the guy who gets the obscure niche ass shit. On another note Thor your video editing has gotten so amazing I've been inspired to get into it. At one of my jobs (I.E a library) I've taken a lead role at editing cringe art videos for the youth. The ps3 was limited by ram in general but its cpu would run circles around the wii u when properly utilized, it had extra compute cores to boost what a gpu of that age wasnt capable of. The switch is less powerful than both. The chipset its based on is as old as the wii u hardware, and it runs most games at 720p, the wii u actually runs almost all its games at 1080p natively.

That would be because the "ps3 aesthetic" likely means poorly optimized games from the first few years for most. And the switch just struggles to run modern standard games in general, its hardware is basically only capable of ps3 era texture sizes and such.

Nah, the games SHOULD run at 30fps at least. Same as movies SHOULD run at 24 fps at least to not cause headaches. Same as books SHOULD have a minimum font size that is still comfortably readable for long stretches of time. Low FPS CAN be used deliberately for artistic purposes, and btw good point, BUT... it NEEDS TO BE DELIBERATE then, and it needs to have the rest of the things in the game deliberately designed around this. This is a great point. Just look at the works of Wong Kar-Wai. In his films, he'll lower the frame rate to sub 10 during intense scenes as a way of highlighting the disorienting nature of the moment. I get your point with low fps being used to serve a point, like to homage ps1 games and such, but in the case of DP2 it is insanely clear that it was not done for that purpose. Toybox clearly just doesn't know jack about stuff, doing the bare minimum to fulfil the creators vision, and then any time people try to call them out for it it will be followed up with "hey it was intentionally like that". There's low frame rate done for an artistic or meme point, and then there is just incompetence.

I rather have the whole game run at 30(possibly even in the 20's) than have it go from 60 and run outside to 12. Its jarring, and not "SUDA 51 charming" jarring. Aside from the framerate being garbage, this game totally missed the mark from its predecessor. The first game was just the right amount of cheese and awkwardness, with a older gen feel. This game visually seems to have a little too much polish and no longer creates that perfect lightning in a bottle scenario of so bad it's good like the original. It looks like the makers of this game tried their best to replicate with the old game did, without realizing that a large amount of the original games charm was in the amateur presentation. Not to mention, that the original game didn't have framerate issues like this. The original game is a masterpiece and this one just looks like some try hard attempt at recapturing the same feel, without understanding the original or what made it good at all

I get where you're coming from, but purposely bad, AKA unpleasant to deal with, gameplay design really shouldn't be a valid aesthetic. While back in the day it certainly didn't ruin games, they were good in spite of such flaws. Or in other words, this game would be a better experience without the poor frame rate, or more importantly, the inconsistent one, with stuttering. I hate to say it, but people being into deliberately bad graphics and such these days is some weird hipster shit, and it's gone too far. I'm not nostalgic about 5th console gen 20 FPS performance, or my desperately playing Halo 1 on a late model Pentium III back in the day. People like what they like, but I hope if this gets ported to PC they fix the framerate.

Yeah, I feel like DP1 had a genuinely good studio behind it but was hurt by the fact that it began development in 2004 with only a vague idea of what "next-gen" hardware entailed and was originally intended to release in 2008 (before the legal issues). Although I can't blame Toybox entirely for DP2 either because the story and characters also feel massively inferior to DP1.

Great analysis Thor! I WANT to go back and replay DP2 for all the side content but the performance creates a really difficult barrier for re-entry. I actually love traversing Le Carre and soaking in it’s minutiae but the load times, low frames, and momentary freezes, which make me worry the game is going to crash (thanks DP1 Switch port), combine to make it a very tedious experience. It’s a shame because this IS a good game but when I can still point to the 360 version of DP1 as the standard bearer for solid technical performance of the series and it’s sequel released 10 years later doesn’t even come close to it well that’s uh...a bit messed up lol. Still I enjoy hearing your opinion on games and this one does not disappoint. Thank you so much for what you do!

Your discussion on framerate left out something important. I also grew up playing old low framerate games. Most of us did, the n64 Zelda games were locked at 20fps iirc. The thing that made them okay is the lock. Variable framerates that vary wildly have some very real concrete bad effects: they make your expected control inputs weird, because the input lag is effected by the update rate of the image on the screen. This frequently results in frustration, headaches, and nausea. From what I'm seeing in this video, DP2 is willing to jump from 60 fps to 6 depending on what's on screen, and that's really, really bad. That makes the game physically feel worse for a lot of people, and can physically make them sick or in pain. That goes beyond the bounds of an artistic choice imo.
@thorhighheels
@thorhighheels 4 жыл бұрын
yeah i didn't actually know low fps could make someone physically ill. I absolutely would've mentioned it if I did. tho if a game wants to make someone physically feel bad to convey something, a game could still then use that as a deliberate choice, specifically for that purpose. not saying dp2 at all tries that mind u, but i don't feel that makes it go beyond the bounds of artistic choice at all.

Thank you so much for this video! I enjoyed playing DP2. Is it flawed? Absolutely. Do I prefer the first game? Yes. But there was so much I loved about DP2, and the ending felt so satisfying to me. I wanted to see more York and Zach, and I really love those characters, so it was a blast getting dive back into this wonderfully weird world of Swery’s with them. I appreciate your honesty and overall positive feelings about the game. Great video!

Have you finished the game? There are 4 dungeons, not 3. And I have a lot of trouble calling the plot very well built having seen what fuckery goes on in the fourth chapter. As for the framerate: there's a difference when it's low on purpose and when it's just a rushed game, with not just low fps, but freezes that makes my head hurt, crashes and softlocks. I was waiting for the minigames softlock to be patched for two weeks, because I just couldn't progress. And I was not able to finish three side quests because they bugged out. And I had to replay a lost hour of progress when it simply crashed. There's a lot of rationalizing going on in this video. It's cool that you liked it in this state, but maybe people should know a bit more of the downsides to not get burned by a glowing review like this. As for me, I very much enjoyed the first chapter. After that it just felt like going through the motions just to see the clusterfuck that was the ending (the scene after the credits was great tho). I felt it was a big step down from the first game, at least storywise

I agree with about everything you said. This is a modern game but despite that managed to capture the feel of some of my favorites like Hotel Dusk, The Last Window, and Flower, sun, and Rain. The game doesn't have to be flawless to be amazing as was evident by the first one. I consider DP1 to be a legitimate 10/10 game after its final ~3 hours were the best hours I have spent in any game, and even though DP2 didn't blow me away the same way the first one did, I felt at home playing it, and finishing it made me miss all the chacters. And the hotel theme slaps hard.

Personally my problem with the frame rate is that it makes me f*ckin' _queasy_ and I can't imagine I'd be able to play it for long. That said I've played older games with framerate issues and they never really bothered me, I don't have a problem with someone playing around with the framerate artistically unless they make it so choppy it makes me sick.

28:12 Dude, did you just call old pixel art garbage in the same breath you used to defend poor frame rate? Even PS1 games tried to reach 30 FPS, usually. Original Mega Man or Castlevania? Garbage. Having your average frame rate on the clock? What a bold artistic expression!
@Rihcterwilker

You're taking "garbage" to it's literal meaning, which is not the case here. It's just artistic license, Thor tends to say alot of stuff is "garbage", which really means something like "not to the standards of your everyday AAA game".

There's a video I would recommend you watch. It's about a guy talking about DB: Kakarot and how they found the things in it they expected to find and how that kind of analysis can be kind of self-defeating. By Thor High Heels. Great person. Cause that spiel on frame rate was... reaching at best. I fully agree that frame rate can be a tool and that low frame rates can be an artistic expression but nothing about this game gave me the idea that it was anything but poor optimization. Unless you're also going to argue that a minute+ loading screen was also on purpose and served to make the player chill out between door frames because vacation.

i never argued that the game DID it on purpose tho. i just argued that games in general can do that, and that i dont care if dp2 did or not as i dont mind either way. i even directly call out the publishers for releasing a "blatantly unfinished product" during that same bit.

The first game was amazing. I recommend it often. As much as I wanted DP2, I don't know, it just didn't grab me in the same way. Maybe I've changed. But DP1 was a genuine effort that earned the campy stuff. DP2 was a conscious attempt at quirky and weird. Not the same thing. Just an imitation of itself at this point.

The wonderful whistling tune of DP1 has become the THEME of “something that’s a bit odd or weird yet endearing is happening right now”, and I love that! Kinda uniquely, I was introduced to the genre of camp from DP1. What I thought was it’s skillful handing of Thomas got me interested in learning more about drag culture… which sucks that DP2 somehow took many steps back by trying to handle one or two things the writer/s didn’t deeply understand or research much about? Anyway, the worldview presented and surrounding camp (at least what it was back in the 2010s) encouraged me to understand myself more, and that life can be absolutely batshit crazy and out of your control at times, but you are never alone. Lastly, as someone who grew up with the PS2, is photosensitive (I get head and eye pain, not seizures), and prone to motion sickness, the “issues” with DP2 is the painful input lag and constant frame stuttering when moving around in the open world; NOT just that the frame rate is low. I played through DP1 perfectly fine on PS3; I didn’t feel any input lag and lower than 30 frame rate is perfectly fine with me (and honestly I prefer under 60 due to my mentioned specific problems). DP2’s input lag and stuttering meant that I could only play for 3 hours at a time before starting to feel queasy.

To be fair, just keep in mind DP was never meant to be a survival horror game, and those sections were forcibly shorehorned in. So, yeah, the otherworld sections are tedious and take waaaay too long, but they were never even intended to be there at all from conception. And it sort of contributes to the endearing janky nature of the game. And in DP 2 they're literally just there because they were in 1. I don't think there's any excuse that time for how long those sections wind on and how unfun they are.
