I do not have any insider information but its my guess that the Bryant family has an issue with 2K using Kobe’s name or likeness for promoting gambling. We haven’t seen a Kobe card since February which the heavy gambling content started with the all star packs around the same time. They likely demanded 2K to remove him from packs and that explains why he hasn’t gotten a new card or is not included in the champion packs either. 2K deserves no apology since they created this mess and the lack of communication or transparency plus the waiting until the night before to announce he was no longer the collector reward are all scummy business practices. 2K needs to be more honest with their customers

How people were forced to gamble to get opal Kobe and decided that's not how she wants things to go and how to honor his husband. Rights are signed year by year, not day by day or month by month. They still have Kobe’s rights. If they had any business acumen at all they wouldn’t have released a game with a player on the cover that the rights were going to expire.

If they lost the rights to Kobe, then why wouldn’t they announce that before they remove him as the collector level reward? It would have been the best PR move to make to let people know why. Instead they faced backlash (including an article in FORBES magazine. My thought is that there is some ongoing negotiations between 2k and Kobe’s estate, where they have to keep quiet until it’s all settled.

I believe that if 2K lost his rights it may be because the Bryant estate decided that they weren’t happy with the monitory practices that they were taking (i.e. pack purchases/gambling for the players of your choice). I’m sure that they made a significantly larger amount of revenue than initially disclosed at the time the contract was negotiated. They absolutely wouldn’t want that kind of information to be released publicly.
