Watch the Barrington House project: • An Introduction | The ...
Work on the Los Angeles project wraps up with the finishing touches both outside and in. Plaster specialist Alfonso Garcia replicates the original "cake frosting" plaster detail on the walls, while plumbing and heating contractor Eric Downs shows host Kevin O'Connor the new bathroom fan system that not only takes stale air out, but also brings fresh air in through a damper in the basement. Homeowner Kurt Albrecht gets a look at the new HVAC system that will also clean the air, while landscape designer Melanie Williams shows off the finished landscape, and the irrigation system that will keep the plants healthy year round. Inside, interior designer Rachel Horn and her team from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, show master carpenter Norm Abram how they've used a mix of antiques, reproductions, and upholstery to create inviting spaces that are appropriate for a Spanish Colonial Revival. Homeowner Mary Blee introduces Kevin to her new son, who's arrived just in time to enjoy the renovated house. After a look at the master suite and the new kitchen, the family gathers on the back terrace to congratulate general contractor Steve Pallrand and site supervisor Angel Leon on a job well done.

A true work of art. But that real-estate property situation in LA is mind boggling. Thanks for posting!

I cannot *BELIEVE* they gutted that pristine, all-original, butter-yellow kitchen with floor-to-ceiling tile. That act alone was criminal. 😢😢😢😢

The plasterer was awesome and the tile guy was very good. I hope they replaced the screws holding the front gate to the wall because they were not grabbing. It even appeared one of the lag bolts on the balcony railing was doing the same.

The house they are working on is a lost art. You don't see too many people who can do a Cake Frosting seam.

19:50 - It's amazing what some people consider "limping along". Most people in the world will never know the luxury of this woman's version of barely getting by.

I liked seeing the differences between east and west coast work. Was very happy to hear the designer's stuff was temporary, as it did not match with small children at all. My ER nurse self wanted to curve those soapstone corners myself; I can see a bad forehead laceration on one of the kids running right into it. Overall, I really liked how the house turned out. Alfonso the plasterer is gifted and it was great to watch him work.

But the kids won't be small forever. When I bumped my head or scraped my knee at something in the house, i learned not to run in that area or be more careful. :)

I sincerely hope someone got the original tub, toilet, and sink from the bathroom..... god I would KILL to have such a unique original house like that! So sad that people want the same Mcmansion or MID CENTURY MODERN abomination. Now all i see in rehabs are open shelving in kitchens, gray/black/white color combos and "natural wood" touches. Give me ALL the orignal lathe and plaster, tile work, built in cabinets and shelves, and other small forgotten details of homes from 1950s and before. You can send the granite counters, open concepts, and vinyl siding to the graveyard.

I think because the house is fairly small, not having doors makes it seem larger and feel more spacious.

The proportions of this house are so weird, like it was made for very short people, at some times some workers almost banged their head in the arches.

Why don't they use gutters for the roof? There are always possibilities that rain water isn't entirely clean. I really like the design of the built-in kitchen cabinets and i'm wondering why they don't have much doors in the first floor.

So the homeowner changed the cabinet door designs? Didn't they initially have that arch, from the cabinet shop mock-ups?

They generally do two houses every year. One is in Massachusetts and includes the whole team, the other is usually (but not always) in another state and uses other contractors. Most of the team generally manages to visit the out-of-state house during the build. People keep complaining about the size of the houses they work on, and by working on other houses they can work on smaller houses in other states. I guess they can't keep everyone happy.

A real house, after all the cookiecutter, nouveau riche suburban garbage. Painful to see so many of the original features trashed. I hope someone salvaged all of it and lovingly restored them and sold it to someone who will cherish them. Unlike these people. Gutting a totally original house, "because we can!". The plasterers are amazing. Nothing beats handmade details. That interior decorator actually has taste. Dark wood and mustard with warm lighting, yummy. The animal print ruined it. So cheap and nasty.
