Hi Chris, I’ve watched hundreds of you tube golf coaching videos and I think yours are technically the best. One thing I’ve never seen discussed is, however, the fact that, in my view, the way the golf swing is coached these days is to move the clubhead outside the line initially (allowing for rotation) in order to generate width and then inside the line on the downswing to avoid an out to in repeat of the backswing. It would be much easier to understand if someone pointed this out. Am I missing something?!

This is an outstanding video on swing path, Chris. While you don't mention wrist action, I can see that you turn your left wrist down between last parallel and impact to get from an open to square clubface at impact. Is that something we need to consciously add to the other movements you recommend in this video?

Great swing, Chris! Most people are trying to rush the clubhead into the ball thinking that will somehow give them more distance. If they did the opposite and try to keep the clubhead as far behind them as they can and simply let the clubhead strike the ball, instead of forcing it, they'll hit the ball farther and straighter with far less effort.

It looks like you pull your right elbow to your hip during the downswing which means your hands are closer to your body at contact vs. setup = hit it on the toe of the clubface? How do you get your arms/hands extended away from you body after that move so they connect with the ball the same distance as for setup?

Hey Chris great video. It may just be a feeling, but with my irons I feel comfortable swinging, I make good solid contact and the swing feels like more of a single plane swing. With my driver, I often feel jammed (kind of like an inside pitch in baseball or perhaps for you cricket). Should the overall swing between driver and irons essentially be the same? Is it just a queston of ball position that causes you to hit up or down on the ball? I saw on Instagram the other day you had something about moving the circle, but I can't seem to find that video on KZfaq.

Hi Chris Looking at the video, from the top of the back swing the club head takes an arc around down through the ball due to its momentum. The hands take a route of there own on an arc slightly steeper on the way down then just prior to impact they move left due to the bodies rotation left and the club being released. Your comment would be appreciated!

@oldprogolf7292
@oldprogolf7292 3 жыл бұрын
Good video, Chris. I do question, however, if this movement can rely only on gravity to drop the clubhead from the top. Like you, I study in detail many swings and my feeling is that some effort (often unconscious) is required by the player to lower the club. The hands and arms pull down (Sergio is an extreme example, his father taught him to pull down) without steepening the shaft. Difficult for the less flexible, I never learnt it in my youth and fought a slice for all my career. Got it now at 70. Of course many great players (Jones, Locke, Cotton, Snead) swung over the top with their hands but dropped the clubhead by rotation of the left arm at, or soon after, the top of the backswing. Different strokes!
@xxthadeucexx
@xxthadeucexx 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think he's advocating letting gravity do the work in an actual swing. I think it's just to get the feeling of what it feels like to work the club on an arc that starts with the clubhead falling down/arms working down. Once you get the feeling, you can then replicate it with more speed and purpose instead of trying to let gravity do it.
@oldprogolf7292
@oldprogolf7292 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxthadeucexx I think you are right. What I would like to know, and can't find anywhere, is what force actually lowers the club and Chris does not say. Could be increase in spine tilt, right arm and right pectoral pulling down, left arm pushing down or something else. Whatever it is, I never learnt it as a young pro and now, at 70, have found my own way mainly driven by the left arm (my right arm and wrist are too inflexible). I would like to know what today's top players do but my guess is that they don't know which is why no-one teaches how to do it! Chris, can you help?
@xxthadeucexx
@xxthadeucexx 3 жыл бұрын
@@oldprogolf7292 The club lowers via a sequence of things. You need all the parts to work in sequence to get the proper path to the ball. It's not just one thing. The lower body needs to start rotating to make way for the torso rotation while the arms move down. If any of these things is out of sequence, there will be problems that we fix with compensations. I can tell you that many people struggle with a slice, not from rotation and path, but from the face being wide open. Face control is so critical but often overlooked.

Hi Chris. We always hear the pulling the arms down is bad - can you explain as this seems to be the opposite. Thanks
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Great question Johnny. In my experience if the golfer tries to pull the arms down it can cause the club to steepen, if we can get the arms down but also be aware of the club heads movement along with this we should be ok 👍

Everyone always talks about club head path but shouldn’t the focus be on the path of your hands? We know we want the club path to be circular and we know we want the low point after the ball for irons and before the ball with the driver but if you have your wrist angles set it doesn’t mean your club path is good because your hands (and by extension your arms) are traveling the way they should. Every swing tracer I’ve seen always shows the club path but they never show how it relates to the has or arms? Is it not easier to control your arms and hands than a club head 3 feet away from you? I’m asking for a friend:p

When I make this motion I no longer feel like I am able to apply leverage to the clubhead. I played a round of golf with a younger person two days ago. He was about 6' 2 " with long arms. He hit beautiful 10 yard draws with his driver. The longest drive he hit measured 400 yards on a par 5. It was almost all carry. Although he was by no means an athletic specimen, it was possible to see that he was applying crazy amounts of leverage . His friend, shorter by about 4 inches, was hitting paltry 325 yard drives. Neither of them could chip or putt: they missed chips frequently by more than 25 feet and 3 putts were common. But they were leveraging those gigantic drives!
