SO MANY HOOK-UPS! Kokanee and Rainbow Trout at Hicks Lake Harrison Hot Springs BC | Fishing with Rod

We visited Hicks Lake at Sasquatch Provincial Park and lost count on how many kokanee, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout we hooked!
The bait we used are Pautzke Bait's single eggs and Fire Balls:

Hi everyone, this has been asked a few times, so.... The rods we were using are G.Loomis SR6010 IMX. The reels are Shimano Sedona 500. The main line is 10lb PowerPro braid. The leader is Seaguar STS 6lb. The hooks are Owner SSW #4. We use Pautzke Bait's Fire Balls and single eggs for bait.

You can definitely use this rod for casting and retrieving, but a 6' version would work even better. This particular model is quite soft, and being only 5' you don't get enough power to whip the lure out properly. With that said, I've used it to cast 1/16 and 1/8oz lures without any issues.

Patrick I It’s called 4boys Boat Loaders. If you Google that it should show up. They are based in Kelowna BC and Calgary Alberta, and ship the entire rack in a box all over North America.

@@FishingwithRod It was great, there was a creek on the north end of the lake i use to walk up it and fish the pools for cutties around 3lbs the lake had some nice rainbows too, dont remember it holding any kokanee though and I'm sure the fishing pressure as hit these lakes a fair bit. Sure miss it, definitely got to make a trip next time I'm back home in BC :)

Yeah rainbows and cutties in the 2 to 3lb range can still be found in the lake, which doesn't have a shortage of fish as it gets stocked annually. The average size of the fish isn't really affected by the fishing pressure, but rather the primary productivity of the lake and fish population density. The productivity has always been a challenge for lakes on the coast, which lack the nutrients to grow big fish. That said, it's a wonderful lake, especially for kids! :)

The fish are not huge in comparison to what's available around the Thompson/Nicola and Cariboo regions but it sure got us warmed up now. :) Ready to hit the interior lakes very soon! Thanks for watching. :)

Hey Rod, quick technical question for ya. I was just at hicks, had some luck with a bottom rig (used floating powerbait); was literally in this exact spot, too. My question is: when you're using the fireballs here, did you folks have both the weight /and/ your bait resting on the bottom, or are you guys keepin' the hook just a few feet from the bottom?

Love hicks lake, and usually fish it from my canoe! What depth did you guys fish at for this? I know this was a year ago... haha. Thanks Rod, love your stuff

Hi Solomon, I am pretty sure we were fishing in around 40ft of water, right on the bottom. Where the fish are really is very water temperature dependent. Thanks for watching!

5' or 6' spinning rods rated 1 to 4lb or 2 to 6lb test are best.

Hi Rod - without a boat and at this time of year would you recommend Weaver Lake or Hicks Lake? You opinion is always valued and greatly appreciated

You can shore fish from both Hicks and Weaver, but Hicks probably has more access points from shore.

Yep Weaver has a dock but it's part of the boat launch so traffic might be heavy through that whole area at times. I've seen people catching fish from the end of that dock so it's definitely doable, it just depends on how busy it is.

Thanks! Perhaps not 5lb, but there certainly are bigger ones in the 2 to 3lb range in there, mostly stocked Fraser Valley rainbow trout that have survived for several years and gotten fat by eating sculpins, and some big cutthroat trout too.

Another great video.. may I ask why you don't let the fish run a bit instead of a steady wind getting them in.. I was told to let them have a bit of line, crank them a bit.. some more line, then slow steady crank.. just curious..

Kathy, I think the short answer is because these fish were pretty small and they were just not going to run even with the ultralight tackle that we were using. If they are a few inches bigger, certainly we'd need to let them go a bit instead of cranking them in. The other thing is, kokanee when caught at this depth have a tendency to just shoot straight up to the surface, so we were actually not pulling as hard as we could, but rather just trying to keep up with the tension as they came straight up toward us. Awesome video. So you're just dropping to the bottom and reeling up a bit I'm assuming with very light rods?

Kyle Neef Yep! You want to go as light as you can since these fish aren’t too big. Having thin braided main line followed by fluorocarbon leader also improves the sensitivity. We use 10lb test PowerPro for main and 6lb test Seaguar STS for leader. Find where the fish are popping up on the sounder, get the bait in that strike zone and you should be good to go. 👍

Yep! The ladies used a slider weight setup with a 1.5ft leader dangling the hook below. I used a three-way swivel setup by having the hook suspending above the weight. Both work equally well as long as the bait was suspending a foot or two off the bottom where these fish were cruising.

Wayne, this was two weeks ago and water temperature was around 3.5 to 4C, so majority of the fish that we sounded were at 45 to 55ft of water (perhaps even deeper but I never ventured further out), right on the bottom or just 1 or 2 feet of it. That first hour when we only had three hook-ups, we were at 40ft of water, so that slight change of location to 47ft made a huge difference. It's tough to find them when it's this cold unless you have a good sounder. Once it warms up some more, you're gonna find a lot of fish active in the shallows (10ft or less).

Rod, what kind of rod and reel are you using here, looks like a nice ultralight setup? Can you recommend ultralight rod and spinning reel?

I'm glad someone noticed! :D This is by far my favourite ultralight spinning setup. It's ridiculously sensitive and can handle pretty nice sized fish. The rod is a G.Loomis SR6010 IMX. It's 5' long, a bit short for casting distance but does the job, rated 1 to 4lb test. Not exactly a cheap rod since it is G.Loomis but like I said it's super light. The reel is a Shimano Sedona 500. This reel has been primarily used for ice fishing, I usually throw a Shimano Stradic 1000 onto this rod, but the 500 actually feels even better!

This G.Loomis rod would be too light for smallmouth bass. Shimano has ultralight spinning rods but they are all quite a bit faster and not as sensitive. I don't use them for trout, but I do use a couple of Clarus models for smallmouth bass. Some of the 6' and 7' Shimano Clarus 2-6lb rods are great for bass, they're sensitive but also has a fairly stiff backbone.

your releasing the Kokanee?? I was told to keep them Due to them being so Delicate they will die from the stress alone. was I lied to????

You were not lied to, but you've misunderstood the information being presented. Kokanee are not more delicate than other salmonid species, which all don't do well in warm water. Kokanee is primarily a summer fishery, therefore post-release mortality is often quite high so retaining them is often recommended. In this case, these fish will survive just fine with minimal handling in very cold water (4C).
