There's no missing this place, so how did we miss it for so long? Not many antique places are right by the confluence of two huge freeways, with a giant sign to boot! Chattanooga, Tennessee's East Ridge is a long-established antique destination, and we're just starting our journeys there in this video.
East Town Antique Mall is our destination today, chosen because we found an amazing lamp there a very long time ago and hope that lightning could strike twice! It's a large, established mall at the center of this overgrown antique plaza, with so many great old things--and a few vintage pieces that are hot new collectibles.
An Eickholt paperweight from 1996 and Heisey Glass from 1896 vie for attention, while displays of banks and ashtrays, Rosemeade Pottery and some unusual coffee services offer great variety (Lenox decorated with butterflies...and spider webs?). Granny's rockin' uranium glass lamp, a 1950s drug rep swag piece by an unexpected maker and a crazy Victorian oyster juice bottle are fun and novel discoveries, not surprising in an antique mall I first visited in a prior century.
Heritage looms in Chattanooga, and our drive-through of the Chickamauga National Military Park gives a glimpse into a place whose bucolic face belies the carnage that took place here at one of the most strategic sites of the Civil War. We speak of the scarcity of things we see in the park, in the context of what they say about the people and circumstances of that horrific time.

Funny how 60's and 70's is so collectible. All I know is that when I first went out as a college student in 1969 we used orange crates for shelving and cinder blocks and boards for bookshelves. Hmmm I wonder if those are collectible! Everyone had plants and terrariums.

Pretty sure Le Cruset is out there in pink. I am thinking there is going to be a good bit of pink and Barbie stuff out there. For some it will be the new Barbiecore thing, for older people - the nostalgia. I had Barbies, but was never a collector. They were for play. Right now I have a bid in on a That Girl doll. She was my hero when I was a kid trying to get to Broadway. Brand new - not sure what it's gonna cost me - but it is calling to me. 4 day estate auction.

We went to Rock City in the ‘70’s, when I was a kid. I should say almost went…we parked and back then they would come by your car and put a bumper sticker on your car. Just as they did and moved on, my baby cousin got sick all in the backseat and we had to leave! But we at least got a bumper sticker! My dad used to laugh and tell that story a lot, much to my now adult cousin’s chagrin! 😅

I love those Burmese glass pieces, but I'm a sucker for anything with ombre. When I looked it up on eBay, I noticed there's someone who makes light switch covers out of broken uranium glass. Super cool! "For $325, you can do whatever you like" ha ha I also love the WMF pieces. Are you familiar with Ruskin? The factory was located right by where my husband grew up. The Denver Art Museum has an amazing Ruskin pottery display.

@@TheAntiqueNomad I think their pieces are so gorgeous. From the Wikipedia: "When the studio closed in 1935 the formulae for the glazes and all the pottery documentation were deliberately destroyed, so that the unique Ruskin products could never be replicated."

I remember buying Barrel of Monkeys for my little brother one Christmas back in the late 60s. (Coast to Coast hardware always sold toys at Christmas.) It’s also the store where I bought my own Penguin Server less than a decade later. I guess that means I am vintage, along with a lot of the things I own! I also own a covered wagon lamp that was owned by my father-in-law, and it still works. You press down on the wagon tongue to turn the light off and on.

Good evening, George! I'm fighting the urge to collapse, just so I can be here for your premier 😆 That oyster-shaped glass bottle is something I'd be quite interested in having. I liked the fish bank the best of the ones there. I have one of my granddad's block planes. I'd like to have some of the old moulding planes. The little yellow chair the applied flowers piece was setting in really interested me. Was it an old one? OMG! I remember the pineapple drink set, too. The one we had was yellow and green. I had a Barrel of Monkeys when I was younger. I REALLY liked that intricately carved folk art box! Heisey is my favourite in clear glass. For me, Heisey is the pinnacle of clear glass. I'm not all that fond of it in the coloured glass, though. Loved that Bohemian vase with the handles! If I had to put something in a drawer, I'd find a place for that piece. There were many items of interest for me there. The tour of the battlefield was quite interesting, too. Thanks for taking us along!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 11 ай бұрын
That is so kind, I know you work awfully hard so I hope I can at least lull you to sleep! The oyster bottle is one of those "ugly" antiques that are really fascinating and I would gladly have. The fish bank was my favorite too, although I almost bought the buffalo. That folk art box was so documented that if I was actively collecting, I'd have bought it! Barrel of Monkeys...I remember how the expensive toys sat there on Christmas while I played with them...think that annoyed my parents. Heisey is so good and it's sad that younger people don't know it, their clear particularly was good (although I admit I did like their flamingo pink). The handled Bohemian vase and the WMF piece were perhaps my favorite things in the store. I'm glad you enjoyed!
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 11 ай бұрын
@@TheAntiqueNomad Isn't it funny how kids seem to enjoy the less expensive toys over the expensive ones? 😂 Mom said I would rather play with jar rings and other things, from the kitchen, than a lot of the toys I had. Heisey needs to be promoted more than it is. It is exceptionally good glass, especially the clear, and it is the "clearest" clear glass, to me. I'd love to have a Heisey beverage set in the "Colonial" pattern. I'd want the simplest pattern, so it shows off the glass more than a pattern. I just don't have another inch of space for another beverage set.

@@TheAntiqueNomad If I only had the space! As of right now, I think I have about 55 beverage sets, (full-sized and, I think, four or five child's sets), I think four table sets, three berry sets and two or three decanter sets. It's unbelievable at how much real estate all of that requires to display. I've always wanted a Heisey "Colonial" beverage set, but there's just nowhere else to put another set. Moving from a 5000 sq. ft. house to one half that size, and combining what Mother already had here with what I brought that I wanted to keep, puts quite the damper on continuing to collect things like those sets. If I ever find a place to put a Heisey set, though, I'll be after one, for sure.
