Years ago I managed a movie theater. One weekend we showed Raiders and we had the woman who played Marion (Karen Allen) as our guest. She signed autographs for the audience after the film. She was SUCH a sweetheart. I told her I was a huge fan of Raiders and I adored her character. She was gracious enough to give me an autograph, It's a picture of her, in the bar, looking at the medallion and she wrote: To Josh, I'm your goddamn partner, Karen Allien (clearly a reference to the scene at 13:04). and of course, I still have it. She was so nice and it was a pleasure to meet her ☺️.

I watched these movies so many times when I was a kid. They sparked my interest in history and ancient cultures. Now I work as a curator and archivist in a national museum. That ending was very realistic. The majority of supposedly priceless artefacts ends up in storage somewhere, never to be seen again. Side note: these movies were also my first exposure to Nazism. I only knew Nazis as the bad guys from Indiana Jones and had no idea they were real. Because I kept thinking so much about Indy's adventures and started to make up new stories in my head, I began drawing swastikas everywhere. Which, in modern-day Germany, is very much frowned upon, as I soon came to find out the hard way.

A fun fact of John Rhys Davies (Sallah as you realized), it´s that when he played Gimli in LOTR, he was one of the tallest actors in the casting (being the dwarf). Viggo Mortensen or Orlando Bloom are shorter than him.

I saw this with my Dad at 14 when it first came out. One of the few times we had together without the rest of the family. We talked about a lot of things afterward that stay with me even today.

The opening scene is the climax of a "Treasure of Sierra Madre" type story: Indy and the other two each had one piece of the map, so they had to work together to find the temple. Gun guy thought they reached the end, and tried to betray the two others to get the treasure for himself.

These films were set up like the short adventure serials shown back in the 30s and 40s as warmups for the main movies at theaters. They stood out as different from other movies even when released, and are still special. Lucas, Spielberg, Williams, and Harrison Ford, how could you miss? You'll like the next two for sure (the third is my favorite).

What Script Fact: The famous scene in which Indy shoots a marauding and flamboyant swordsman was not in the original script. Harrison Ford was supposed to use his whip to get the sword out of his attacker's hands, but the food poisoning he and the rest of the crew had gotten made him too sick to perform the stunt. After several unsuccessful tries, "shooting the sucker" was Ford's suggestion. Steven Spielberg immediately took him up on the idea, and the scene was successfully filmed. Pranked In Post Fact: During the scene where Indiana (Harrison Ford) threatens the Nazis with a Panzerfaust, you can clearly see a fly creeping into the mouth of Paul Freeman. Contrary to popular belief, he did not swallow it. Freeman explained in an interview years later that the fly flew off, but Steven Spielberg noticed it and decided it would be funny to cut out a few frames so the fly would not be seen flying away. This made it look as though Freeman ate it, and he found the edit highly amusing. Empire Magazine chose this scene as one of the most common scenes for which people press the "Pause" button on their VCRs.

15:32 Surprised nobody seems to have mentioned the background to this classic scene. There was a whole fight sequence storyboarded and rehearsed with the swordman and Indy with his whip. Sadly on the day of the shoot Harrison and many of the crew had been suffering with dysentery and just wasn't up to the task of performing and so he famously asked Speilberg over lunch: "Why don't I just shoot the sucker ?" He agreed and history was made.

I don't think this is a spoiler, but if you happen to watch "Captain America", there is a throwaway line from someone who scoffs about Hitler: "The Fuhrer digs for trinkets in the desert." It's just an amusing callback to this movie.

6:30- Been an archer for 15 years..hitting a running target is tough with those kind of bows..they're not meant for long-range like my setup. And the plane propellers kick up enough wind to blow those arrows off-target-mine are twice the size/weight and still a 7 MPH breeze ruins many a bull's eye for me on 30 yard shots. 7:25-LOL...Ford was Voted "Sexiest Man Of The Year" twice that decade, the girls probably weren't faking the dreamy look.

I was watching the news today and they have an auction going on from things that were used in movies. For instance : ET - The Bike They Used In ET - The Ark Of The Covenant from Raiders Of The Lost Ark - The Dance Floor From " Saturday Night Fever ". Just to name a of many.

The scene with the guy with the sword being shot was supposed to be a a scene where Indy used his whip and fought him with it. But Harrison Ford got food poisoning and couldn't do it, so they improvised that on the spot.

Growing up, my mother always made me close my eyes during the ark opening scene. I always thought it couldn't be that bad. Then I watched it for the first time and realized yeah, it was that bad. 😂 Horrifying

This is the first video of yours I've seen, and what a pleasure it is to see such a beautiful young woman enjoying one of my favorite movies. I'm a long time Spielberg and Harrison Ford fan so, of course, this is one of my favorites. To me, it will always be just "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The "Indiana Jones and the" was added after the sequels were released. The call letters on the seaplane at the beginning of the film were OB-CPO. Images of R2-D2 and C-3PO can be seen among the hieroglyphs on a wall in the Well of Souls. The scene with the swordsman was supposed to be a long choreographed fight scene, but Harrison Ford, as well as most of the rest of the cast and crew had developed dysentery and could only stand for 15 minutes at a time. You can see it on his face right after he shoots the guy. They tried several times to film it as written, but couldn't make it work, so they decided to change it and an iconic scene was born. The line "It's not the years, honey, it's the milage" was ad-libbed by Ford. Spielberg is known for giving his stars wide latitude to improvise, such as the "You're going to need a bigger boat" line in Jaws. The second movie, Temple of Doom, is, in my opinion, the worst of the franchise (though I haven't seen the last one yet). The Last Crusade is at least as good as this one, plus it costars Sean Connery. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn't nearly as bad as the haters say it is, even though it does costar Shia LaBeouf.

Two things always happen every time I see someone react to this film: no one understands that the medallion with the one-sided inscription comes from the burned hand of that Nazi torturer and then that everyone thinks badly of Katanga even after he tried to save Indy and Marion telling the Nazis that the former was dead and the latter that they wanted to sell her to who knows what human trafficking. I don't know why, but it happens all the time. Everyone will tell you to only see the first three films, but I would ask you to see all five and not let anyone influence you.

There were some scientists who theorized that the Ark was a giant capacitor. A capacitor is an electronic component that can build up and store a charge of electricity. If it is grounded (or touched) anyone touching it would be shocked. So, the very act of carrying the Ark out in the desert with all the dry air and walking around would be like rubbing a wool sock, building up a charge, and touching someone for a shock. The Israelites were strictly told not to touch or 'steady' the ark because it would kill them. Only carry it by the posts and were probably non-conductive.

Indy should of kept this woman, shes a ride or die and a badass one at that. Plus she never let him get off easy, says 2 words and punches him in the face.

I love that the eyes move on the golden idol from the beginning. It's a weird little fact that I missed the first hundred times I watched this until it was pointed out to me that it's watching Indy approach over the trap floor. Really explains the setting where mystical/magical stuff exists but no one notices it.

For some reason all movie characters in the 80’s, when they suspected something was drugs or poison, would always taste it to be sure. It didn’t seem weird back then but it definitely does now. This was fun. Your commentary cracks me up. Looking forward to the rest.

George Lucas loved the old movies that did that kind of adventure so he themed it for that era.

Some trivia almost no one mentions: The actor who played the chubby Government guy with blonde hair (William Hootkins) was a pilot attacking the Death Star in the Original Star Wars. He's one of the first to die when his ship collides with the Death Star, his character name is "Porkins".

The spy on the plane behind the "Life" magazine was played by Dennis Muren, legendary Visual FX artist.

You were right not to trust Katanga...meaning, that's what the director wanted with that camera angle, and his curious behavior. We weren't supposed to trust him 100% until exactly the right time.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark": A youngster is about to go globe trotting with Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. What will she make of this, "old, fast-moving, action-packed, character-centered, romp through tombs?" Spielberg wanted to do a "James Bond movie," but Lucas suggested the 1930's cliffhanger movie serials. Second choice Harrison Ford got to create another iconic movie character. Karen Allen made "Marion Ravenwood" Indy's equal, who could drink a Neanderthal under the table, but was all Woman. With enough action scenes for THREE movies of this genre, it convinced a generation of college students to "dig in the dirt" as now-Cool Archeologists. Yep, I liked Indiana Jones right off the bat.;)

Marion was a teenager (15/16. Lucas wanted to push it and start it when she was 11). Indy was her first love, but he was much older (mid 20s). So that's the "falling out" Indy had with Ravenwood (Marion's father, Indy's teacher), and Indy left and broke her heart.

I've now watched every video on your channel (as long as it was something I haven't seen before. Your LotR reactions were the best so far btw. Completely excellent.) You are such a genuine, astute and goodhearted lady and I appreciate you sharing it in your reactions, with we the audience, so much. If you are taking suggestions here are a few movies and shows I recommend to watch if you haven't seen them already: *Merlin* (a BBC series that is amazing and so underrated. It is genius in terms of character and acting, generally pretty good story wise as well, despite a couple of suspension of disbelief or slight inconsistency type things that are forgivable due to how great it is overall), *Avatar: the Last Airbender* , *Hidalgo* , *Padington* 1&2, *Alita: Battle Angel* (underrated), *Narnia (the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe* is the best of the ones Disney put out and the most accurate. It's a 10/10 but I wouldn't be surprised if you've seen it when you were young. The other two have their great elements making it worth a watch despite straying too far from the books in plot, and oftentimes character, for my taste), *The Secret World of Arrietty* (a Studio Ghibli adaptation of The Borrowers), *Castle in the Sky* (another Ghibli film), and if possible *Spy x Family* (I'm not sure how possible these last three ones are, I'm pretty sure that animes and Studio Ghibli tend to be a bit trickier with copyright) There are lots more that could be suggested. Mostly oldies but goodies, *The Lady Vanishes* (1938), *Shane* (a western), *Fandango* (1985), *Arsenic and Old Lace* (very fun and bizarre), *Father Goose* (1964) and *Gaslight* . In case you haven't watched it (or if you always have a great reaction to it), *It's a Wonderful Life* is a must watch, especially perfect for around Christmas time. No idea if you've seen these animated films already but also: *A Bugs Life* , *The Fox and the Hound* , *Up* , *Toy Story* (1,2&3), *Nemo* , *Megamind* , *The Incredibles* , *The Iron Giant* ,and *Wreck it Ralph* .

I love how the climax of the film really felt like that Old Testament style "smiting", like how Genesis describes God destroying the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with sulfur and fire for their wickedness. He told Lot and his family to flee and "not look back", but his wife turns and looks and is burned into a pillar of salt. It was cool how Indy knew not to look.

The melting faces was traumatic when I was a kid😂 but the effect is so cool 😎

Wow I made it 7 comments down before I stopped and I didn't see one person sharing this Viggo Mortensen broken toe overshared movie fact. In the funny scene in the marketplace. When Indiana just pulls out his pistol and shoots the guy with the big sword. There was actually supposed to be a Fairly long choreographed fight between the 2 of them. But the day that they filmed this Harrison Ford Came down with the flu but they didn't have time to stop filming. Him just pulling the pistol and shooting the guy was Harrison Ford's compromise to still shooting the scene Rather than recuperating.

Someday maybe you can watch "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" with Sean Patrick Flanery. It was a really good TV show. I'll tell you a bit more about it with "The Last Crusade."💙

Hey remember in Lord of the Rings when Pippin swipes the palantir from sleeping Gandalf and leaves a jug in its place? That was an homage to the golden idol scene in this movie.

the opening scene of this movie with the gold Idol is so famous. if you like and enjoy the simpsons look up indiana jones simpsons ; the opening after the credits is bart as indy (homer is the big rock boulder supposed to be etc) it's hysterical and awesome!!!

Fun facts about the movie. 1. The swordsman scene was supposed to be a big fight , but Fird had fisentary the whole day and suggested to Spielberg that he had a gun and he should just shoot him. 2. In the well of souls scene when Indy comes face to face with the python, there is a flash of lightning. If you look on the wall to the right you can see the protective glass separating ford from the snake . Thevfx team didn’t have timetoexit it out

Before it's release the film was given an (R) rating, mainly due to the graphic deaths in the films climax. Spielberg and the special effects department added the flames in front of Belloq's face to slightly obscure his head exploding and his fingers getting blasted off. He resubmitted it to the MPAA and he got his (PG) rating.

There's no way he could swim between two vessels underway. 6. Coolest final death scene in cinema history. 7. The ride at Disneyland is pretty cool. Make sure it's one of your first to get it out of the way before the line gets too long. Adventureland. (If you can still afford it)🙄 That other professor is played by Denholm Elliot. He played Coleman in, "Trading Places".

10:24 um yeah its weird but here is a basic thing about it "The script states that Marion's age in Raiders is 25 years old, making her around 15 at the time of the affair with a 27-year-old Indiana Jones." So.... Yeah he did wrong. The idea i believe was to make Indy not a hero but a flawed man who does sometimes align with good because deep down he wants to be good even if he doesnt act on it. Still weird though.

The mouse that "freaked" out in the ship's hold with the boxed up ark was not acting, it had epilepsy and had a seizure as they were filming the swastika being burnt off the box.

16:57 the sequel is considered a soft prequel, in that the frenchman is somewhat right about the indy in that film but he has grown more mature and in this film he is the shadow of how indy could have been if he didnt mature. He matures even more in this and its results are evident in the third film (all that being said, this is the first film you watch if you watch the indiana jones series.)
