I guess it's usually assumed that that's just something people do to not make enemies of rich people, or, as Trevor mentioned, for the good ole' library donation and/or because the kid is "a legacy student". Not that there are actually people paying hundreds of thousands to have pictures taken of their kids playing a sport they've never played. That just seems like way too much work to put in to it. It isn't affirmative action, which also states how many white people have to be there, it's the legacy students. They are taking the spots of people who earned it by hard work and determination.
