The way Oda parallels Otohime (MLK) vs Fisher Tiger (Malcolm X) is brilliant. I love how a Japanese author can portrait a theme so dense and ideologically divisive such as "raci$m" in a beautiful and emotional methaphor. There's no way around it, Oda is a genius!

The racial themes of fishman island are so powerful. Ive watched the series, then rewatched with my friend, and it still hurts me to see even when i know its coming. Otohimes ideal is something i think is so beautiful, and i truly believe it applies to our world as well.

We've actually seen Vice Admiral Strawberry in the Enies Lobby arc. He was one of the Vice-Admirals assigned to lead the Buster Call assault that Spanda accidently triggered. It's really sad how Queen Otohime died and that her own children couldn't attend her funeral because of Decken's advances. Something to note is that the Queen had observation haki, which allowed her to sense others and anticipate actions. Hence why she was able to dodge so well. It also meant she could sense the negative emotions of the citizens, and it was weighing down on her mentally.

Oda makes a point of anytime someone is telling their backstory, Luffy either leaves or doesn't pay attention. Remember back in Arlong Park when Nojiko was telling the Straw Hats about why Nami joined the Fishman Pirates and Luffy just got up and Left for a walk? In my opinion, he probably does that to show that Luffy does not care about who you were, what you did or what happened to you, he sees you for what you are now and if you're his friend, that's enough reason for him to take on the world

I had tears of anger and sadness and still do when watching again with you. I think the message is important and I’m thankful Oda included these important topics in his writing of One Piece. Definitely pulls on the heartstrings.

I still find it annoying how despite Luffy having slept through Jinbei's story, Sanji seemingly understood it the least by asking Jinbei to take accountability.

I keep imagining Boa Hancock mentioning to Jinbei in the driest voice she could manage "I've heard you once sailed with Fisher Tiger" (assuming she could see his Sun Pirates symbol), JInbei responding "yes" a bit cautiously and for Boa to nonchalantly reply "Hm. For a man, I've heard he accomplished many great things. You should have been honoured to sail with him." and to look directly at him when saying this, and for us the audience to know that Jinbei realised that she must have been a slave that Fisher Tiger freed and that he also understands why he needs to be quiet about it and to calmly reply "yes, it was indeed an honour".

Sometimes, the most impactful / important part of One Piece is the backstory of characters that lead to why we are doing what we do. Then, Luffy falls asleep during them.

I love how you can see how Queen progressively gets more and more annoyed with sanji. Yeah post timeskip sanji is really fucking bad for a while. He gets a little better later, or at least Oda calms down with the horny gag.

I love how this was handled throughout the story. We first met fishmen as oppressors during Arlong Park, then saw a glimpse of reality in Sabaody and now we finally have the full picture.

Fishman Island, like Skypiea, is a very underrated arc. I'm glad that you're seeing the nuances that this arc is provided to the series as a whole and I hope that more people will take note.

I see that most American fans connect the fishman arc with the history of black slavery specifically, but as a Japanese fan, I hope they also understand that racism is not only about black slavery in the US. Slavery and racism has always been a part of human history everywhere. I don’t think Oda’s main point was to highlight the black slavery history specifically, but it was to portray bigger picture of human society as a whole. American people really need to understand that not everything is about the US. I bet most people have no idea that there were even Japanese slaves in the history.

You had a slip of the tongue, but you weren't wrong either, for as fantastical and goofy and absurd the world of one piece is, it rings so true to our own world and struggles. Of course there are obvious parallels we can draw throughout the story but we connect to it because it speaks true to our hearts

This is such an underrated arc. The backstory here is as good as any.

The Koala cleaning scene never EVER fails to make me cry. I literally can't explain it but every moment from when they introduce her to when they drop her off just hits my heart so hard.

A lot of Fishman Island is rough, but this section here is why I don't hate it. I love what Oda told through Otohime and Fisher Tiger. In the best way possible, Fisher Tiger's inability to let go of his hatred shocked me but made total sense. I was even more moved on how he was more concerned with helping the next generation not give into the hatred that consumed him. As a mixed kid who is half black and white, I'm grateful for being a by-product of the fact that times have changed. I've learned to really embrace both sides of my heritage even if I'm not wholly on one side or the other Edit: I also do realize that we're still fighting this today, but it's eerily realistic and I'm merely praising what was talked about

I love this arc so much, I don't think Oda has ever gone into such a painful issue in a way that feels so close to reality, and so in-depth. Fisher Tiger and Queen Otohime are true legends, her scene saying to drop the weapons because children are watching is one of my favorites in all of One Piece.

I don't know if you noticed, but at some point in this arc, it is said that the children of fish men tend to have very different appearances from each other and from their parents. They are even shocked that humans judge others by their appearances, since for Pisces men diversity is something very common and natural.

In hindsight, I love this arc more and more for how powerful it is. It's easier to look back and be fond of it, than to 'like' it in the present, when you're first experiencing it. The real world parallells, with slavery, bigotry, racism, hatred... The change has to start with someone, only the strong can make it happen. Otohime called herself fragile, but she was one of the best. Jinbei, too, is simply amazing. I find it so interesting, and admirable, how Fisher Tiger held so much hatred, yet he didn't let it cloud his hope for the future. He was justified, and his heart full of conviction, even more than the hatred that ended him.

I know Koala said "Because I don't know you people" in response to Jimbei asking why she's afraid of them for the sake of the narrative, but let's be real. She had good reason to be afraid of them after having her life (and the lives of all humans) threatened and being sucker punched by Arlong. LOL

The amount of "tough love" that there is in One Piece is quite alarming. Oda was most definitely beaten up as a child :D. Jokes aside, this flashback is one of the best.

This arc is really deep and meaningful. The storyline between Fisher Tiger and Queen Otihime proves that. And everytime I came back to this arc, Koala's backstory always makes me cry😭 This is also a suitable arc for Nami. We know how much she hates pirates at the start of the show, but then forgiving Hatchi and then forgiving Jinbe? Thats a character development! This also shows the contrast between Arlong and Nami. Both of them experienced the slaveries between their people. Arlong generalized all humans are evil and became the creatures that he always hated which furthermore spreading the racism-slave cycle, while Nami with a simple understanding and forgiveness stoped the racism-slave cycle!

lol! I remember being so pissed at Luffy that he missed all that. It's OK though, as he is probably the only person who could not have heard the story and still understood. Luffy is a sleeper of character judgment. He just needs the moment he's in to read people and know what they're about. He doesn't judge on past or future, but what someone is like in the moment. I love that about him, and think it's a huge part of what makes him such an interesting character, despite being so seemingly straightforward or simple-minded. He's just a big gumu-gumu-no-balloon of instinct. I think we could all stand to be more like Luffy and judge people just as they are, without any preconceived notions.

Fun thing to keep in mind: Arlong didn't keep the marines in his pocket to avoid them. He did it to avoid Jinbe. If jinbei caught wind of what arlong was doing, he'd have killed Arlong himself.

And this is why Fisher Tiger is my favorite character to this day! He believed in a better future where there is no hate between humans and fishmen and he knew it was goung to take time like otohime said, he saw hope in Koala. And even if he could no longer be saved from his hate to the point of choosing to die before having himan blood in him, he never spread his hate to the next generations ❤❤

A lot of people deny the themes in this arc because they don't want to think Oda thinks this way. There's another, very specific mention of that era in this arc. You won't know it when you see it. Few people have heard of it before watching One Piece, but some of us who are caught up know of it, now. For me, choosing to mention that here tells me everything I need to know about this arc. It is nothing less that what is portrayed in it. All that said, have you noticed, or has anyonr mention that Fishman Island is directly beneath Marie Geoise? That's a messed up place to live to be entirely honest 😭

Yea this arc is so good for the message and theme even though some people say it's one of the weaker arcs. I love Fishman Island and I do admit Jimbei fd up royally with not checking on Arlong for the 10 + years he left him in East Blue so understand that he has some fault in letting someone who technically was a criminal out even though they were family. This hard had so many things that hit close to home for our world's societies and even personally with some of the stuff I grew up with. Loved the reactions and you keep making me cry all over again even though I was getting better at rewatches lol. Oh and Luffy rarely gives a flying f about the past LMFAO!

My favorite reoccurring theme is Luffy never being there for backstories or lore drops. He wasn't present for any of the lore dumps about Nami on arlong park. Or any backstory here. I love it

Oda so delicately and beautifully shows the cycle of hatred/revenge/racism and has the best full understanding of it. Its like a deadly game of tug of war. It doesnt matter who started it, because now you have two sides pulling in order to kill the other side and save themselves. Each side can only see victory achieved by pulling the rope. But pulling the rope means you're actively killing the other side. Both people now in the wrong, but also justified for trying to save their own lives. The only way to save both people would be to call a truce, but the amount of trust needed on both sides to just BELIEVE that they both will stop pulling is insane for the person who has been actively pulling this rope for decades, how could they possibly trust this person who has been trying to kill them by pulling their end. The end of that level of hatred requires us all to live together in non desperate living situations where we can see for ourselves that there arent major differences between us. But for the people still pulling the rope, they could never see a world in which they live hand in hand with the person or people at the end of that rope. But children arent born in this world with a rope in their hands. Their parents and their society determine if they pick that rope up.

I feel like the message of the flashback is even more important now in these times than it was when it was written (polarization of political field, war that shall not be named in YT). People are so obsessed with justifying hate and violence that the actions or piece are just trembled underneath.
