My favourite part of Grand Army was seeing black teens just being black teens. Involved, kind, hard working in healthy relationships(for the most part) be it familial, platonic or romantic relationships.

As someone who was a freshman a couple months before the show was on : I personally felt bad but mostly angry at her because of the validation she felt she needed, but I also don't really try to intentionally judge her because I've been told many times that I'm crazy independent and like a wall that can't be broken by people and kind of a social outcast thats still social so I can see why I don't need their validation, but others can't. I also feel bad for her because before Covid-19, when I was a freshman I saw it happen with many girls needing validation from guys and it's really disheartening that this is a reality.

Joey still gives me white, performative feminism, and each time she was called out either online or in-person she would scroll past it or ignore it. Each time one of her bummy friends would be plainly sexists, misogynistic, and bigoted and she'd act like it didn't happen, wouldn't even correct them. She plainly annoyed me. I felt really bad for her though when she was assaulted. I was pissed when Tim said "that's just joey" after she reported the incident like he was an eyewitness and didn't support her when he was questioned...like dude you watched her cry as she was assaulted. Anna PISSED ME OFF talking bout some "she'll regret this", like bro, that's your Best friend! Everyone failed her. But unpopular opinion, I still think I can feel bad for her and still not like her. I want the best for her though, but I still just don't like her. I think that's why her character is great, it creates a conflicting feeling.

YES! OMG, I saw that! Literally amazing! So true! It emphasizes the stark difference between white feminism and black feminism. I really appreciate that frame/scene because as a black woman I can't be freeing the nipple all willy nilly, there are so many other issues that I have to worry about, like NOT DYING over nonsense matters. That was a really illustration of the difference between the feminism movement. Also, i was under the impression that maybe Dom wrote that.

I want to just mention how much i loved the depiction of social media in this show. It's hella realistic especially the comments under IG posts, such as the one u mentioned. Unfortunately free the nipple doesn't apply to black girls and woman and other poc bc of racial based fetishism. They won't get celebrated for their bravery like Joey, they will only get slutshamed due to society sexualising their bodies and that's why we should stop spreading awareness for feminism from white woman's pov! I don't wanna sound like I know everything as first, I'm not black but a middle eastern hijabi and second English isn't my native language, so if there's sth that's even slightly offensive in my post, pls tell me.

@Taylor R'stephens I don't believe that's entirely true. Joey was so loud and was radiating such loose energy in the cab, that in some parts I almost forgot if she is actually enjoying or is just too hammered. Either way, the two boys should be locked away because it was just a vile and disgusting behaviour, but joey was throwing herself at them, like riding them, hooking up with them and stuff which I feel like led to that. Also, I could see how her character changed as she couldn't let the boys touch her but still hung out with them, she was traumatized for shit. Tim, I don't think it was his fault, he was literally telling her to stop and he didn't want to see that shit.

as a latina/hispanic it was so refreshing to see minorities in their actual light because usually it's so SO stereotypical ie Leila being an asian woman who is NOT extremely smart or "abg" and although it's unfortunate how fast Dom is required to grow up to just live it's very realistic. A lot of minorities specifically black women are always thrown into adulthood way quicker than they should be. As well as Sid being thrown into coming out. I really enjoyed seeing realism in diversity in this show instead of having poc and lbgt ppl be used as background characters to average white main characters

I also wanna mention the fact that Doms younger sibling did not speak the native tongue of their parents it also seems to be very common that that is the case (in America) my case as well being Black and Filipino barely knowing any Tagalog. Going home every so often to be with family in a home country I never knew how much I needed. Not being able to speak the language is such a huge disconnect. Not being able to speak to my Tita’s & Tito’s and being able to hear all the stories of my family that I’ll just never know. Having a language barrier between my mother & I the closest person to me in my life. My parents were born in the Caribbean islands and they refused to teach us creole bec. they wanted us to be 100% French. They didnt realise that French people will ALWAYS ask us what our "origin", while assuming White foreigners have been here since 10 generations. They will ALWAYS see us as Black women, not French women. I also hated feeling completely disconnected from my uncles, aunts and cousins when I visited the islands. Apparently, it's enough of a widespread issue that there are some Creole classes one can pay for.

As much as I appreciate Jay's protest in the end I feel like it will have no effect on Own's end and if I were Owen I'd be upset because 1. Wrong place wrong time 2. That was an opportunity meant for Owen that Jay took but didn't even fulfill. That performance could have landed Jay a college scholarship and even though it was to support Owen and highlight the differences in punishment towards black students he messed up a huge opportunity for himself. Allstate isn't going to do anything or talk with the principal or superintendent about Owen's case and I think it Jay's efforts yet noble were a waste.

Yeah, he could go on and live a better life to honor Owen, but he chooses to fight for a better life for both of them, and I thought it was such a powerful moment. Pitting black boys against each other for opportunities to thrive is way too common, and i'm glad this show chose to have Jay remain hopeful and loyal to Owen.

Lelia was a bad friend and she was jealous but what made her any different from Joey in the beginning of the season. They both felt like they would be appreciated the “male gaze” at the expense of the things that they cared about. To Lelia it was her only friend and to Joey it was her feminism. Lelia wanted the male attention the Joey was getting because she thought it would help her with her social anxiety and identity issues. Joey enjoyed the attention she got from her guy friends even at the cost of her own “feminism.” Joey has some problems with her dad and it shows in the way she interacts with guys because she doesn’t feel appreciated when she’s with her dad even with her political views. Lelia didn’t even know what actually happened to Joey until later on in the show. And she distances herself from that guy then on. Her and Joey had the same character. But that bomb threat didn’t make sense to me at all with Lelias character. Joey didn’t not deserve what happened to her because in no way did she consent to anything those guys did. People are looking at this show from such a white privileged perspective that you miss the whole point of the shows existence in the first place

The some of show was about the performative activism you see a lot of people especially white women or non POC’s do and how it actually really effects minorities. Joey wanted to be all about feminism but when her guy friends were making those degrading Instagram post about women she didn’t say a thing. Or when her friends were being racist again she did nothing. All everyone cares about and was talking about in tiktok was how much “potential” joeys guy friends had even though they were bad characters from the beginning and the writers of the show made it very clear. They made Joey a cool girl character and it shows because in the beginning all the girls watching the show would talk about is how close Joey is to her “guy friends” even though they constantly kept objectifying her and seeing her for what she can do for them

The Indian guy was literally struggling the whole show. The guy isn’t even Muslim but ignorant people in America are still going to see him as a terrorist and someone who isn’t to be trusted. His immigrant parents are like many other immigrant parents who tell their kids to worry and about school and ignore racism. Because that’s what they had to do to succeed in America. He’s apart of the lgbtq community and couldn’t tell his parents because they were hom*phobic and while having a gf. This man was doing all of this while maintaining straight A’s, doing sports and writing college essays. While all the white characters were worried about traveling to a different country because their very affluent parents could afford to send them anywhere that they wanted even with their low test scores

She was the exact trope of the cool girl. She was holding herself back when she continued to hangout with those guys. If that scene in episode 3 didn’t happen do you still think she was going to change. It was to show that the cool girl had feeling and emotions that shouldn’t be ignored. He took pride in his practice, and showcasing it wasn't any different to him as when he practiced it. It speaks high volumes for him to protest against his performance. He knew he could play it, and he didn't care to show it. I was so unbelievably proud of him.

But wasn't it literally a performance? Like the whole point is to perform? That's like an actor taking a role in a movie but not acting because 'They know they can act'

22:00 Joey wasn’t only inebriated but also high. I’ve been there and when you’re like that you’re FNCKED UP! Im sure her thought process was super slow and definitely didn’t realize what was happening until it was too late. I loved her confidence and to see that dissolve by the incident was tough to watch. I’m glad her story at the end of the season finished on a happy note. She was feeling like herself again.

@@glodymadiamba6064 there many different ways someone can realise what they did was wrong, tho truama is not always how it goes.. it happens, i would have perferred if they did not choose that route but the way they explored how the trauma affected her life in every way possible is honestly remarkable, they didn't try to gloryfiy it or anything it all seemed so hard to watch (for me personally)

When it came to Joey, Jay, and Dom's breakdown analysis you literally took everything that I felt and turned it into a functioning sentence scratch that a Paragraph. The scene that really hit me was Joey having that "talk" with her friends after everything went down. They could CLEARLY see that the only thing that she wanted from them was an acknowledgment, just inkling that they were aware of what they did. But of course, they knew that and by admitting it would force them to confess to themselves that they are rapist point blank because even though it's widely talked about in today's culture its's still taboo in the sense that an association with the word alone true or not alienates you from society. And when Anna tried to act like she was just hearing everything for the first time when Tim finally confessed not because it was the right thing to do but because he wanted to silence his guilt... BOY BYE. Don't even get me started on Dom and Jay

Joey is the Embodiment of the girl who we all wanted to be in high school. Beautiful, confident, sure of herself, developed physically as a woman, has hella friends. As a young girl still trying to figure things out, I can see why Leila became somewhat fixated on her... but that jealousy is supposed to waine as you grow and begin to see that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Not to mention that even the people that seem to have at most to go there are sometimes struggling as well. If you have Main character syndrome, it will definitely shake you inside when other people can so easily take the attention from you.

A couple things about Sid He was kinda obviously Hindu (there's also a lot of Islamophobia in India, which you'll see it in his family too). Secondly, his folks were *not* Indian, their accents were abhorrent and their Hindi was so painful I nearly cried TT-TT

I think that was intentional though, is probable that Sid's parents came in the US around 20 or 30 years ago, with time one could lose the affinity that they have previously with one language. And unlike Dom's family i think Sid's parents never wanted to teach to their children Hindu because they want to appear as good American citizens, to have their kids more Americanized then them.
