The best sequel (and prequel) by far is, "The Animatrix." Even if you don't watch any of the other sequels, definitely watch it.

*1. Understanding the Logic of the Matrix:* About the resurrection at the end: The matrix-avatar of Neo (the "residual self-image" (RSI)) is a programmed image, like the spoon. Like the spoon this RSI of Neo does not exist. *It is just a bunch of code* - also because of this, machines can't know what tasty wheat tastes like. “Do not try and bend the spoon, that’s impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… there is no spoon. Then you’ll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.” - Spoon Boy - "Yourself" is the mind, which realizes the meaning of moving, of dying and of being alive. It is him beliving that the body/RSI is getting shot, so that his belief gonna make the RSI "act" dying. Because he realized that "being dead" in the matrix means exactly the same as "bending the spoon" - he realized it is not the spoon that bends - it is not the RSI that is gonna die - but it is he himself putting himself in this believe and made therefore the RSI "act" dying. Like the "Jump-Test" - he doesn't fall from the building - he make himself believe that he falls down. When he realized that it is all himself that drives the narrative, he bcomes the One and decides that his RSI is not dead. That how he managed through trinitys confession of love that he is not dead - "because he is the One and the One cannot be dead". And thats how he finally could fly - because there is no gravity - there is no spoon; it is only he himself. Now you know that Neo didn't died at the End of the movie and resurrected, but he was never dead in the firstplace, but thought that he had died, because he didn't understand, that the matrix-avatar is like the spoon not there. There is no residual self-image. It's only you giving it this meaning. Also this is the reason why the Matrix can't told you who you are because you only reside in the Matrix made RSI. It is not the real self. Like this the Oracle can't told you who you are because you have to believe that you are who decides to be. Something the Matrix cannot tell you and something the Oracle can't force you to believe but only showing you the doors. You have to go through the door you want to go through, by yourself. It is different from choosing the pill; your willingness or unwillingness to do something by heart let you choose the the right pill. If you only choose because you're curious, you will take the red pill, but you will not believe that this is your door. So you will regret this choice. If you just accidentally fall in the rabbit hole you don't wish to explore the "truth" and will take the blue pill to escape this "nightmare" you feel yourself trapped in (Agents chasing you etc. and you just want to live a "normal life"). If your innerst wish was to know and live by the truth, you will choose the red pill and stay in wonderland - because that's what you decide for yourself to be (So the splinter in your mind does't really matter, if you don't pay much attention to it and want to stay oblivious). Eventually the Oracle already knew that Cypher regret his choice and will try to go back. *2. She told him: Oracle: "Being the One is just like being in love - no one can tell you you're in love, you just know it, through in through. Balls to bone." Neo looks away as if he realises, that he doesn't know that is the One (or in love). Then she stands up and said: "Well, I have better a look at you". The she tricked him in choosing his self-believe/fate: Oracle: "Ok, now I'm supposed to say, < mmmh, that's interesting, but >, then you say ..." Neo: "But what?" Oracle: "But you already know what I am going to tell you." Neo: "I'm not the One." Oracle: "Sorry Kid." She just confirmed what he believed already and did't told him what he should believe. Why? That's why: "[...] no one can tell you you're in love, you just know it, through in through. Balls to bone." Like this, the choice to sacrifice himself for Morpheus - she never told him that he will choose to act like the One, even though he doesn't believe exactly to be the One. It's just that the situation of free choice let him believe that his choice matters, as if he decides about the fate of Morpheus and of himself. But it was the ability to choose that let to his mental awakening and act like the One is supposed to act: "[...] you just know it, through in through. Balls to bone." *3. Secrets:* The oracle could foretell him what is going to happen with Morpheus, because she is a program from the machine-city that depends on the Matrix as part of their power plant. So whatever Cypher told to the Agents, she already knew about when she met Neo. So the plan of the Agents was to capture Morpheus in the building where the Deja-Vu happened, because they had this deal with Cypher to give them the opportunity to capture Morpheus. That was their plan and that's how the Oracle knew that they will capture Morpheus - she also knew that the crew would have to pull the plug - or because now Neo is on the field: Choose to rescue Morpheus. He just had to believe that is gonna work, because (!!!spoiler alert for the second movie!!!) "the One" is a program opposed on Neo, that the Matrix created to fix a bug in the program, that the Machines call the "Integral Anomaly" and in order to handle it they opposed the abilities of the One on Neo. That's also how the Oracle could know that Neo is "The One", because that's how the Matrix wanted to control the "Integral Anomaly" of the Matrix code, by putting it somewhere where it could not easily break out and gave him control over the Matrix, like seeing the Code, stopping bullets with the mind, hijacking an Agent and obliterate them from the inside and flying around like Superman. Because the Oracle is part of the Matrix system, she knew that someone has to become the One at some point - like the other "potentials" who live with the Oracle. And that's why he only had to believe that he is the One, because otherwise he could not realise the power of the "Integral Anomaly" inside him. So the Oracle had to make him believe that his choice matters in order to be able to tap into his greater potential as the One. Also you have to enjoy the little computer jokes. ^^ * The agents literally put a computer bug into Neo. * Neo had to accept the cookies from the oracle to proceed. * Oracle was one of the first major database companies in the 1990s, so it makes only sense to give her character that very name. * Plus they first used the constructor to select attributes they'll carry over to the main program, the matrix. * In computer science, "agent" means "software system capable of making decisions". As someone who has worked in robotics with a bit of AI, my main concern with AI is it being a powerful tool that humans can use for evil (as is the case with any powerful tool). I do not worry at all about AI taking over and doing evil of its own accord. Yes, computers don’t always do what we expect or want, but it’s invariably a lack of proper ability or preparation for the complexity of the real world and so the AI is inept in its task, not unexpectedly able to develop genius ability to grasp and handle all possible scenarios that it wasn’t designed for and take over the world.

Most definitely watch the Animatrix on the channel. I know I saw one of the shorts in the theater before another movie before Reloaded came out. That short prefaced the events of Reloaded. I definitely bought the dvd with them all just after Reloaded released. So it feels weird to me to not watch the Animatrix at least between the two films. BUT!! watching them after Revolutions would be fine, I'd suggest definitely watching before the fourth movie though. And again good to see you guys back in action on KZfaq.

I always found a lot about it funny. They are super advanced but don't harden their machines against EMP, even though it can be done. Still, they were really good movies and this one was such a great story idea.

Speaking of conspiracy theories, you could watch "Conspiracy theory" movie from 1997, with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts :) I don't listen most of the music from this movie, but I think it was good for the movie itself. And movie ends with a Rage Against the Machine's song ("Wake up"), which is my fav band. Matrix Reloaded also has RATM song at the end.

Here's a cool thing to share with Lucy. The Wachowski brothers (now sisters) included an interesting thought experiment in transgenderism. The character, Switch. She was supposed to be one sex in the Matrix and the other sex in reality. In the Matrix, you are the mental projection of your digital self. So, what if your perception of yourself is the opposite sex as your physical self? They explored this with the character of Switch. That's why the actor is so androgynous. And looks different than everyone else. She/he is wearing creamy white rather than black. And has pink sunglasses instead of black. Unfortunately, they didn't have time in the film to fully explore this idea, and had to cut it all out. Switch still exists, but without explanation. But I think the thought experiment is pretty cool, though.

Bro the 4th movie is a crime against humanity... The Matrix is a trilogy. Also unrelated, ''the Matrix'', not used to describe the movies, refers to the few trillionaires that own most of the worlds economy. Metallurgy, Agriclture, Law firms, Farming, Insurance, Phishing, Universities, Banks, Pharmaceuticals, Main stream media, Hollywood, etc etc. A considerable amount is all owned by a few mega corporations and ''Investment Funds''. This is fact, however, what's considered conspiracy theory is what they do with this power and how they influence and manipulate the masses. It's very hard to know for sure.

About the music, it's not Techno, it's "Industrial". Different genre. Rob Zombie, Rage Against The Machine, Ministry, Marilyn Manson,... some examples of music used in the movie. Techno is pure electronic, Industrial is not, it has instruments like guitars, drums, etc in it. It's a bridge between Techno and Metal. In fact it's older than Techno, so you can say without the Industrial pioneers of the early 80's, like Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Trobbing Gristle, .... there would be no Techno.

The Animatrix should be watched before the second movie. Although it was basically released at the same time as the second movie several of the stories had been used as promotional material for the upcoming resumption of the story. At least two of the stories (the Osiris’ mission and the kid’s story) are directly referenced in the second movie and the 2 part rise of the machines story is just a more detailed retelling of the history Morpheus gave Neo in the first movie.

After the Halloween season, a few movies both of you might enjoy: I'd watch them in this order Groundhog Day (1993); Looper (2012); Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Also The One (2001); Stranger Than Fiction (2006). Some now believe because of unexplainable things in physics that we are living in a computer simulation created by an alien race to study things. Imagine we reach a point that we escape this simulation to meet our creator and it's a teenage science nerd studying AI.

So U never saw old classic sci fi like V for Vendetta , Event horizont , Blade Runner , Alien , Terminator or Dark city ?

Good reaction you pretty much got it. However you missed the real message behind the movie. This is a really about the spiritual journey. From an Eastern perspective the mind is a prison from which we can awaken to realise our true nature. There are lots of religious and ancient mythology references. For instance from the bible comes the holy 'Trinity', Morpheus was the god of sleep and even their ship the Nebuchadnezzar comes from the great Jewish babylonian King. The name Neo means new and different form of something from the past. Neo has teachers like anyone on the spiritual path such as Morpheus and Guru's (already awake or enlightened) such as the Oracle. So you see from an Eastern spiritual Buddhist and Hindu perspective you are already in the matrix because you are ignorant of the true nature of reality. To see it on face value as a threat from AI is fine but the Wikolski brothers ( now sisters) had much more to say. Of course If you are not interested in the spiritual dimension that's fine it just means you're not ready yet to wake up from the 'real' matrix 😉

Thanks for another engaging reaction. This movie has a lot of Christian symbolism that is rarely commented on. “Neo” (the new man) is the One to save the world, and he dies and is resurrected. Cypher (whose very name is ominous) looks devilish and tries to tempt Neo in their scene together (advising him to run). The Oracle seems like a John the Baptist figure, though the parallel is very loose. “I can only show you the door; you must walk through it,” a very Christian idea, is said a couple times. And the movie ends with Neo setting out on a mission to reveal the truth to the world. I don’t think this parallel is meant to be a full-blown allegory, but viewed as archetypes, these elements have great power. I don’t think the original sequels are equal to the first movie (the third seemed downright bad), and I never bothered to see the fourth movie.

It's a good way to be used as an explaination to things we don't understand. Like the way/reason God's exist. All 2000 of them.

I don't believe in the simulation theory. It relies in a lot of highly hypothetical matters. You have to take a huge lot of things for granted: That is possible to create such a simulation, that life has originated before to the point of creating that kind of technology, that time is unlimited (if not, the theory starts falling down, it's much less likely), that whatever creature gets there has that kind of interest in creating a simulation (why would they benefit at that point, why would they care?), and a freaking loooong etc... It's a cool theory but only works under huge jumps that requires the reader to accept a lot of stuff that he or she can't possibly understand or know, as truth. And if any of those premises fail, then it's impossible or highly unlikely.
