When I first saw them in the early 80s, they didn’t speak much English. But when Klaus opened his mouth, that all fell away. One of the best vocalists in rock music ever.

Right? Right??? 😁 Sorry, I know I'm 6 months late, but this comment made me grin so hard. I just love that moment. I also love it when they are searching for a comparision to his voice and come up blank. Because no one else sings like that.

Scorpions have such a massive catalog of music dating back to 1972... but they are famous for their 80's and early 90's hits. Their hard rock songs - 'Rock you like a hurricane'... 'No one like you'... 'Rhythm of love'... 'Tease me, please me'... 'Wild child'... 'The Zoo'... 'Lovedrive'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 Their ballads - 'Holiday'... 'Believe in love'... 'Woman'... 'Wind of change'... 'Send me an angel'... 'When you came into my life'... 🔥🔥 And some of their obscure songs - 'In trance'... 'Sails of Charon'... "Speedy's coming"... "We'll burn the sky"... 'Arizona'... 'No pain no gain'... 'Steamrock fever'... 'Hour 1'.

Wind of Change…. Incredible song about the fall of the Berlin Wall, Soviet Union and communism. They’re a German band and their passion about the unification of their country is in every note.

Klaus (rhymes with "mouse") has an amazingly strong voice when you see how little he is. Nickname is Klaus Maus. No comparison I can think of as lead singer. Klaus is unique.

I saw the Scorpions at Monsters Of Rock at Candlestick Park about a year before the World Series Earthquake. It was an epic show but of course, Van Halen (Haggar) was the headliner, so ... Seriously, the Scorps completely wiped Cinderella and the two previous bands off the stage. I believe it was 1986 or 87. They were on fire in the US at that time.

The most amazing fact is that Klaus and the rest of the band only spoke German at that time. so the their lyrics were transcribed in German to sound phonetically like English!!! What an amazing voice and double for the English translation!!!

We have been to a live event with Scorpions and Thundermother 3 days ago and it was a great show with their greatest hits and some new ones. I have seen them 33 years ago for the first time and it's nice that they are still on stage. I am not the biggest fan of the ballads, so maybe you can try "Rock me like a hurricane" or "The Zoo" .

The Scorpions were formed in Hanover, (West) Germany in 1965 by Rudolf Schenker (guitar) who was the original singer... they were initially a 'beat rock' combo that loved 60's British rock music like The Beatles, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Who... Their name came from the arachnid animal obviously, and later became Scorpions. They decided to sing English songs to have a bigger appeal. The Scorpions played locally for years, and then Rudolf met singer Klaus Meine in the local scene and became close friends... When Klaus' band Mushrooms needed a guitarist, Rudolf recommended his 14 yr old kid brother Michael Schenker for the band. By 1970, after Mushrooms broke up... Rudolf suggested that Klaus and Michael join the Scorpions... Klaus Meine was a short guy and did not look like a typical rock star lead singer, but Rudolf (and Michael) felt that he was the best singer in the area. Michael Schenker was a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix and co-wrote their first album 'Lonesome crow' w/ a jazzy, space-rock sound... it was released in 1972 as Scorpions' first album. The original band broke up in 1973 after Michael Schenker left to join UK rock band U.F.O. and became a guitar hero in his own right... Klaus (vocals) and Rudolf (guitar) decided to reform Scorpions in 1974 w/ new members Ulrich Roth (now Uli Jon Roth) on lead guitar and Francis Buccholz (bass) and released their 2nd album 'Fly to the rainbow'... Scorpions toured Europe in clubs in the 70's and released a string of albums as their sound evolved into hard rock... Roth even sang lead on some Scorpions songs ('Polar nights' being one song). In 1977, Herman Rarebell (drums) joined and by 1978, Scorpions had a gold record in Japan and toured there for the first time. However, Ulrich Roth left the band in '78... Michael Schenker briefly rejoined in 1979 and contributed to their next album 'Lovedrive'... but left the band soon after. Michael Schenker would establish his own success w/ his band M.S.G. (Michael Schenker Group) in the 80's and beyond. Matthias Jabs (lead guitar) joined officially in 1979 as Scorpions acquired proper manager and record label... They toured the USA for the first time in 1979 as 'Lovedrive' became their first gold record there... 'Animal magnetism' (1980) went platinum right after, w/ the classic Scorpions - Klaus (vocals), Rudolf and Matthias (guitars), Francis (bass) and Herman (drums). Unfortunately, Klaus Meine discovered in 1981 that he had developed vocal polyps and needed surgery... Rather than replace Klaus, Rudolf and the band stayed loyal and waited for him to recover. A year later, Klaus was able to sing again and finished the 'Blackout' album in 1982 as Scorpions conquered arenas across the world on tour... This 1984 album 'Love at first sting' sold 3x platinum and scored huge hits like 'rock you like a hurricane'... "Still lovin' you"... 'Big city nights'... "I'm leaving you"... Scorpions had the hard rock songs that appealed to the men, and the tender ballads to appeal to the women. Despite having a 2x platinum record 'Crazy world' in 1990 w/ the hit ballad 'Wind of change'... Scorpions discovered that the 90's were not receptive to their brand of hard rock (Nirvana and Pearl Jam were bands of that era) as both Francis (bass) and Herman (drums) left the band by 1995... Scorpions regrouped w/ Ralph Rieckermann (bass) joining in 1993 and American drummer James Kottak in 1997... and persisted, despite low record sales. In 2004, Pawel Maciwoda (bass) from Poland joined and Scorpions picked up sales in the internet age by 2010 as their popularity surged again worldwide... They wanted to end their career in 2014, but the fan response was so huge that they opted to carry on. Mikkey Dee (ex-Motorhead drummer) replaced Kottak in 2016... Scorpions' latest album was 'Rock believer' in 2022.

OMG,, to go back to those beautiful nights of the 80's, windows down, on the way to a great summer keggar beer bash in the woods, singing to this on cassette deck, as the mile markers went by. I thought that time would last forever. It was Scorpions that helped bring down the Wall in Berlin, and Give Hope to the world as the Cold War came to an end. I would give anything to have that world back again.

I was just writing about your "running out of the room", but it's been a while. Want something that will blow your mind? Make you question how you never heard of this band before? Watch the 1970 Live Video of "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group. This combines vertuoso Rock, Funk, Jazz, Blues, Electonic, with awesome drums. Edgar is one of the worlds most talented musicians, too innovative for major success. Yet "Frankenstein" was a big hit on quirky 1970's FM Radio.

Trivia: This band was great friends with Mikhail Gorbachev who loved their song "Winds of Change". He wanted to meet them and invited them to Moscow. That had to be OK'd by the German government since Germany and Russia didn't end as best friends after WWII. Diplomacy by rock band.

MMB, glad to see you out of that comfy-chair, back where you can "run out of the room" when needed. I've enjoyed your exploration of music from the 90's, 2000's, and now 80's, with many less familiar bands. Good for expanding my 1960-70's base of knowledge. Agree with you on the Scorpions, who I was unfamiliar with. The vocalist was the stand-out performer, and the whole band was skillful. To me, this was a generic Metal sound, well played, but not my favorite music.

This is my favorite Scorps song. IMO - the greatest power ballad of all time. one of the things I find so annoying with these reactors that do this song specifically (but there are others) is they listen to the MTV, or official video or whatever that are radio edits. This is a beautiful nearly 6 minute song, that they butchered to ho-hum 3.5 minutes. You lose the bridge, and the guitar outro! You can't help but feel robbed. This is not the reactors fault really - they don't know different. A suggestion and plead would be that new reactors look at various versions - and look for the original recording to see how long it is - if there is a video that is much shorter - then you're not getting the studio recording but a lame radio edit that removes so much of the art. Journey's Separate Ways is another one that constantly gets the radio butchered version.

Unfortunately, you picked a short version of the song. Full vision goes on for another minute or two.. .yes, defiant power ballad. They have several great ones. For the other side of them, check out no one like you, the zoo, blackout ...another ballad is wind of change. Re fall a Berlin wall, and hope for future after cold war. 🙂
