100% and I actually think in most music(As far as my taste goes that is), the better artists, producers etc aren't trying to bombard you with 100 things at once. It's better with melody and a dash of chaos. Hip Hop itself, at it's roots anyways, is a very minimalist artform... But in the best way possible. Even today, all you need is a computer so in many ways, it's even more minimal than it was, although far less limited. Preem embraced that minimalist style of producing and IMO, that's why his music always stood out. I describe his music as "Sharp", if that makes sense? Just give him an MPC, some old records and floppy disks... That's all he needed to help elevate the artform of Hip Hop and DJing/Producing while ultimately becoming a pioneer. His drums are slick but hit hard, he knows how to use bass without overwhelming the track, his cuts/scratches are the sharpest in the game and he just has a knack for finding and flipping samples BETTER than anyone else. Idk who's familiar with the track I'm talking about, i don't wanna get him hit with copyright infringement so i won't say where it came from lol, but Preem used a piece of music from a particular film for an MOP track and when I first heard it, I remember getting goosebumps just for how slick he flipped it. And it's not like he chopped it up super crazy, he just found the best way to arrange it, lowered the volume on one thing, ran another at a faster tempo etc, he added some cuts and that's that... Another Banger. That simplicity is Hip Hop at it's purest.

Premier: I don’t know if you read these comments, but I’ve always wondered about your mixing game. I always felt I could tell when Eddie Sancho mixed your joints versus when you did it yourself. And with all due respect to Mr. Sancho I felt you could do it better-that your mixing skills were the fourth virtue of your overall production talent, after drums, chops, and scratches. (Like, to me, “Ante Up” would not be the record it is if you hadn’t mixed it, though I know you didn’t make the beat.) How do you feel about this? Why did you outsource so many of your final mixes? I’ve always wanted to ask you this! (I’m bout to post this on IG too.)
@Bal2oTheOne
@Bal2oTheOne 3 жыл бұрын
Eddie Sancho did the "real" mix for Ante Up because credits say: Mixed by DJ Premier Engineer mix by Eddie Sancho He mixed almost the whole album Man I disagree Eddie Sancho is one of the best mixers for Hip-Hop. DJ Premier is a legend but he said himself Eddie increase his beats. Just listen The Ownerz by Gangstarr, Albert Einstein by Alc & P, or anything Eddie Sancho was involved.

@erick.roberts9074 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bal2oTheOne Okay, I admit I don’t know exactly what the liner notes mean (and I’m basing my inferences on the liner notes, and my ears, only). But-and I don’t have the liner notes in front of me-I thought Ownerz *was* mixed by Premier-I remember thinking, “Yes, he did it himself this time!” and that that was why it sounded so crispy. If not then my whole theory could be wrong. But a few of (what would have been) my all-time favorite Primo joints I believe would’ve been better served by him mixing them himself instead of Sancho, like “6th Sense,” “Boom,” and “Doobie Ashtray.” For some reason I don’t hear the same space and richness in Sancho’s mixes, and in particular on “6th Sense” and “Boom” the snares are grating to me. But this could all be psychosomatic. I’d be happy to stand corrected!

So many people breaking down DJ Premier hits but it better to get it broken down by the man himself live and direct.

So hard Flashbacks when Preem tells the stories and the way of story telling is so perfect! Like my Grandfather when he told stories from his younger days! ENDLESS LOVE ❤️

I didn’t realize that the album was done already. I have always wondered how he used the “Biggie Small is the illest” line when it was on the same album lol

In my production I tend to think that I have to make something so creative that it becomes complex. Premier reminds me that simplicity is key. Getting the right sample with the right drums will satisfy everyone's ear. Legend definitely
