Orkney or Birmingham, I think all your comments apply. Anything bigger than the e-Niro is a pain in narrow congested streets or mean supermarket parking spaces. KIA 7 year warranty is vastly superior to Tesla's and there are KIA dealers that can do servicing & any rarely needed repairs. Our 2015 KIA SOUL EV was still like new at 6 years old, the build quality is immediately apparent even when just sitting in the car.

The point is indeed to have a car matching the buyer needs. For me it is the model 3 because I do not fly, neither for work or vacation, so I needed to be able to do long trips all over Europe. Especially since we have only one car for a family of 5. Long trips without planning nether stress is a bless. However, I agree, my mother and mother in law have trouble getting in and out without a little help, at 76 years old.

Great review. I also tried the e-Nero and Tesla and went for the Tesla because I prefer (any wife also) the car driving position and both found the e-Nero uncomfortable due to the upright position and more rolly ride. Either way does not matter, get the car you want and they are both great cars. I would have said maybe you should have waited for the Ionic 5 or EV6 from Kia, but I think they are too big for what you were looking at and I am sad that these 2 new cars from the Korean manufactures are just big SUV's when the Koreans are up their as some of the best EV companies

Fab vid Mr and Mrs P. I agree, I had a 2020 Niro PHEV and apart from the obvious about not being full EV, which I now have a 2020 Ioniq ev, I lived my Niro! Had all same tech es ENiro but the driving comfort and position and massive rear leg room and good boot space, which my 2 border collies loved, was by far I think the best all rounder ev out there fir price, range and tech. It’s not super fast nor wow styling but a great car! I couldn’t get one fir love nor money when I bought the PHEV as it was an 18mth waiting list back . Swapped it fir a Leaf 40 Tekna but hated it! Now have my Ioniq which is as good as the ENiro, albeit lower, which I agree with you about getting in and out of at 56 yrs old so Tesla M3 fir me would be a tough choice next time and likely to go back to a cross over style, Id4 or similar. Keep up there vids and looking to use a similar lease scheme next time, unless we move to Orkney!!

If the e Niro were sold all across the US, I may have ended up with one. But since it's only in like 12 of the 50 states, and I am not anywhere near one of those 12, it made little sense to do it. Happy with our LEAF Plus which I feel is pretty similar, but less efficient and not as quick of charging. Still a nice EV and I got a heck of a deal on mine, so it was about $10k cheaper than the eNiro

Great video. We own a Kia eSoul (identical drive train to the eNiro) and are about to take delivery of Tesla M3 so will have both to compare. A few points: 1. M3 now comes with heated steering wheel. 2. A M3 AWD with towbar and optional paint costs £50,800 not £56k. If towbar and paint option aren't required you can save over £2k. 3. No contest if you are a dog owner. I have never owned a saloon before as hatchbacks are more practical hence the towbar option on the M3. A small trailer is rarely needed and keeps mess out of the car. The Model Y is sometime away. I was told by Tesla that the Berlin factory won't be providing RHD for some time so elected not to wait for that. Its extra cost also puts me off. 4. If you do a long trip south from the Orkneys you will always start with at least 90% battery which will easily get you to Inverness. 5. The efficiency, Supercharger network with fast, reliable and cost effective charging help to justify the extra cost. Looking at ZAP map it amazes me how many third party chargers are out of service.

Hey Johnathan, great video as always! Like every techy on the planet I would love to have a model 3 but what I dont hear many people talk about is the insurance and repairs. I know it's hard to speculate on and everyone's insurance quote is different. But it's hard to escape a model 3 is in one of the top insurance groups. I feel like the average person would be better off without the tesla. From what I've researched the insurance group is really high and can be considered a performance vehicle by some companies. Which just translates to more money please. Also the repairs/ cost to put out of warranty stuff right can be costly. There are a lot of news articles that say how a tesla can be easily written off as beyond economical repair. Can the supercharger network and really fast software updates really out weigh all the costs? I feel it's mostly head vs heart. I currently have the ioniq HEV which in my opinion is close to the perfect car in terms of software, tech and self driving. I'm looking to get the Kona EV when my contract is up or similar if the market has moved on. A tesla is just a pipe dream.
@Tom55data
@Tom55data 3 жыл бұрын
I can answer some those concerns. The insurance for a Tesla 3 LR is about 20% more than a VW passat 2.0 diesel, and about the same as an E-Nero. You have to remember that most EV's are more powerful than the equivalent ICE car so more "risky"; the Tesla is relatively cheap to insure given its performance as the crash rates for these cars are 3 times lower when not using auto-pilot and 6 times less when using auto-pilot, so though expensive to repair they are a low risk for the insurance companies. I pay around £600/year for everything - full comp, legal, hire car. I feel you have been provided with negative alternative facts on Tesla cars, quite common, Admiral insurance is the cheapest I believe, but I use Direct line. As for cost for items out of warrentee, the model 3 (and Y) is too young a model to get long term warrentee items (it has 4 years on everything and 8 years on batteries), but generally there is little to go wrong mechanically like ALL EV's. The drive train and electronics are more mature than all other manufactures, the the Korean cars are excellent when it comes to reliability though. The stats quoted elsewhere are for the problematic door handles on the S. Price wise up front, Tesla is not a pipe dream, they are not much more that a lot of equivalent cars - especially the SR+. It should be down to the style and type of car you want to drive and I recommend you try and look past the media that gets no advertising revenue from Tesla so is very anti-Tesla. If you want a sports Saloon - get a Tesla, if you want a cross-over (small EV) get a e-Nero or Kona. My only comment on the Kona is that the quality of the interior is not up to the e-Nero. Finally you should certainly take a look at the Ionic 5 and EV6 when they come out - they are large SUV which is a huge shame for me as I cannot stand large SUV's (that is personal), but they will be fantastic cars.

@@Tom55data hey thanks for the very thoughtful reply and appreciate the insight. I've not tried to get a quote on a model 3 (which I should do), I was mostly going off the insurance groups of each car. Currently the model 3 is too far out of my price range. I felt like I was pushing it with a 20k GBP budget. I'm with you with not liking the suv/mini SUVs. It's more to keep my better half on side :)

My take... if you don't have kids, get a Tesla. If you do, get the e-Niro. The hatchback makes all the difference for hauling stuff around and normal boring stuff like going the dump with a boot full of crud. The Tesla is undoubtedly more fun as it's a lot quicker and not FWD. If you're a purchaser then the 7 year warranty does make a difference in favour of the e-Niro too. So yeah, head vs heart... I have 3 children and the Tesla is quite fine. They love the transparent roof, they love the comfort, they love the rear heated seats, they love vacation all over Europe, they love being able to ask for any music, they love Netflix each time they have to wait in the car, etc. And even for 4 weeks vacation we never had any issue with the size of shape of the boots. And in the worse case, a small trailer costs less than 400 € and a model not higher nor wider than the car will have a very small impact on range. Then you will be able to move a big washing machine or 5 bikes or to go to the recycling. Or you can wait a few months for the hatchback Tesla, ie the model Y. *I am not saying that a car is better than another* but the model 3 is *perfect* for children, from experience. Furthermore, I would not go on vacation with children without a reliable fast charging network, it is one thing to struggle alone, but with kids it can even become dangerous. Not to mention that with children life becomes less predictable, so an EV with the versatility of an ICE car is quite handy.

@@rogerstarkey5390 I would say a touch screen or a joystick with a screen is more of a distraction then real buttons. I didn't much care for it in the Volvo's. When you know the media input button is the 3rd down on the right you can just run your finger down the unit and press it without looking. Turning the middle dial adjusts the temperature. You dont need to look at it. Just move it a couple of clicks to the left/right. Touch buttons are the worst, there is no feedback and I feel like I spend more time looking at them and making sure my finger presses the right thing. If the research about being distracted while talking hands free or talking in the car is anything to go by then issuing commands is still a distraction that can cause an accident(I cant help but think how much google home gets things wrong and it's one of the best). Saying that being able to say call mum is the best. Its horses for courses and I suppose I'm more comfortable with the touchy feely buttons personally I dont like the decision that auto makers are going with touchscreens.

I agree about the Niro colour, it looks the same as the Ford blue used on the old ST200. And I agree about the boot, those Teslas scream hatchback but they put a stupid saloon boot there instead, seems to happen a lot with US cars or is it that hatchbacks are not liked there ? For me the Teslas are a little bland on the inside, I quite like the exterior even though some don't, but the generic inside looks the same in all the models, so you could be sat in any and not know which it is, I do like the Polestar 2 interior better, and like Mrs P my wife also judges the car first on colour, she can like and dislike two different colour cars and not realise they're the same make and model. I would choose the Tesla but only for the charging and resale value, as I bet that Kia will depreciate pretty fast compared.

There are plenty of videos on KZfaq complaining about Tesla quality, reliability and zero customer service. I have to say that haven't seen any videos decrying the e-niro to date. I have two friends and a neighbour who have (had) Teslas. One rejected it due to quality issues, one disposed of his after 3 months owing to the numerous faults that Tesla refused to put right claiming them to be "in spec". My neighbour still has his but is disallusioned with it having been back to Tesla service centre 7 times and still is not fault free...he says he won't replace it with another at the end of his lease. I have ordered two long range model 3 and rejected them both due to very shoddy build quality, on-par with a 1970 Austin allegro. Tesla also blatantly flaunt the law by refusing to refund deposits. They may be reasonably good at tech (I say "reasonably" because the FSD that you have to pay £2k for is a con, as clearly it isn't, ditto for the "summon" and self-parking" feature), but they are no good at building cars to precise engineering standards.
