Peter was the creative force behind most of his videos. He had long been interested in filmmaking. He just channeled that desire and imagination into pioneering the art of the music video. This video and the one made for Sledgehammer were collaborations with Aardman Studios, creators of Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and Chicken Run.

IMO Peter Gabriel was one of the few who embraced the concept of both music and video perfectly. Lest we forget this was the guy who wore all sorts of costumes when he sang with Genesis. He was always combining the visual and the musical.

I saw Peter live in the 80's and his bass player comes out and he has this crazy glam metal hairstyle and I'm thinking "gee, I thought his bass player was some bald dude." Midway through the first song, Peter walks over and pulls his wig off and the crowd was all cracking up!

He can also give you some very sober serious vibes as well, he has always been a huge supporter of Amnesty International and human rights, his song Biko is about Anti-Apartheid, Steven Biko who was an activist in South Africa who was killed by police in custody and the song Wallflower is a great song which gives a perspective of a political prisoner in captivity. Tremendous song with poignant descriptive lyrics

Always worth noting that Gabriel is primarily known as a serious artist. So much so that "So", the album, was written as a response to critics who praised his work but still thought that his range was limited to serious commentary. In response, he wrote an album that was significantly more "silly", as it were. More interesting still, that his former bandmate Phil Collins largely had the opposite reputation, leading to "...But Seriously", which was far more somber and introspective compared to Phil's more "silly" style. Both albums were released around the same time, even: "So" in 1986, "...But Seriously" in 1989.

Saw Peter at The Spectrum in Philly in '86 with my bud from H.S. The end of the show during "Biko" 20,000 of us were raising our fists and yelling along with Peter and then he just stood quietly on stage turning and looking at all of us and raising his fist as we raised ours and let us yell by ourselves man it still gives me chills, remember that night like it was yesterday.

When you talked about Peter's "swag", it reminded me of stories from his band members. They ALL agree that Peter becomes a different person on stage (or in videos). Actually, he is described as the nerdiest of nerds when not performing. Also a genius when it comes to music. 🙂

All great suggestions. And if you want try some more of his darker/deeper songs, I'd recommend "Blood of Eden", "Mercy Street" and "Secret World". I remember when this premiered on MTV! I thought there was no way he could top Sledgehammer and of course, he did (imo). You really need to check out some of Gabriel's earlier work. The songs you have listened to are from the So and Us albums, but he had been making albums for almost 20 years by the time he released So in 1986. From his Genesis years check out "Watcher in the Skys" (long) or "Supper's Ready" (even longer over 20 minutes), "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Off his self titled albums "Solsbury Hill", "Games Without Frontiers", "Biko", "Shock the Monkey" or "San Jacinto". You have to remember that Gabriel was a founding member of the original Genesis and they were out there when he was the band leader.. When he decided to become a solo artist we got songs like Steam Sledgehammer Games Without Frontiers and shocked the monkey Stephen R. Johnson Direct all 3 videos Stream Bigtime and Slegehammer

Time to check out Peter as a live artist. ”Shaking the tree”, ”Secret World”, ”Come talk to me” or of course ”In your eyes” from the Secret World tour. So much goodness an musicality on stage.

This was groundbreaking technology for the time period. Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite 80s singers his early Genesis stuff is out there. But he's just like the cool dad that everyone loves lol. One of the best!

Also I've not heard this song in quite a while might have to have a Peter Gabriel day. Been trying to do "deep cuts" on my music streaming service to try and hear something I've not heard or in a long time.

I saw Peter Gabriel in 1973 when he was the lead in Genesis. He really took off after the left Genesis and went solo.

So glad to see you back to Peter so soon after "Don't Give Up". At the risk of repeating other suggestions, the next video and song you have to hit is "Digging In The Dirt" which has more of a concept to it than "Steam", which was basically Peter just having fun! "Kiss That Frog" is just as cheeky as "Steam", and if you want to give yourself a thrill even after Halloween, I recommend "Intruder" or even "Family Snapshot", no videos to those songs, but the songs themselves tell the stories. Don't forget to check out his work with Genesis as their lead singer in the early 70s on songs like "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", "The Carpet Crawlers" and "Watcher Of The Skies". Great reactions, both of you! 😎👍

The bass is Tony Levin - an absolute legend of the instrument - and has been Gabriel's bass player ever since he left Genesis.

Tony Levin plays that driving bass line.... Such a nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times at the NAMM show.... My old bass player gave him a ride back to his hotel one year.... He also played bass on John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy album and was in King Crimson.... Massive talent!

Peter Gabriel was the lead singer together with drummer , Phil Collins, of the group Genesis. Peter left the group in 1975. Give a listen to some Genesis from early 70’s where they both were members😉

A great era for Peter Gabriel, who in addition to being a great artist, was the founder of Real World Records, a record label promoting artists from all over the world.

I've been a PG fan since late 70's. I even saw him in concert 2 months ago. Many here have recommended some of his great older tunes. I would like to suggest one of his brand new videos, "The Court". The man still has it!

Thanks guys! Peter Gabriel is super cool. Couple of my favourite tracks are "Big Time" - really high octane - and "Games without Frontiers" (which also features a little Kate Bush cameo).
