Living just up the road in Savannah, GA, we all know a Cat I is a slightly extended afternoon thunderstorm. The only problem with Eta is she’s moving slow and there may be some flooding. It’s been raining on and off fairly heavily for the last couple of days, and it doesn’t take a lot to make Savannah flood. Thanks for the info, as I learned something new today, and to me, that makes today a great day. Keep 2 wheels on the ground.

I have a 1992 FXLR with over 70,000 miles. She had been run and put up wet many of times. Rode it from east coast of North Carolina to West coast California many years ago. Which was my first big trip I ever done at that time. Not sure I could do that long of a distance again. As long as I am alive I will never get rid of that bike.

As a new FXR owner from the late 80's I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Nailed it with the In & Out secret menu analogy 😹 - What an insane find. Kind of hoping you change your mind on it and bring it home, would be awesome to see that bike make some reoccurring appearances!

Shadetree....the Fxr frame and flh/flt frame are similar but with big difference being the neck. the flh have a longer neck and inverted trees the forks ride behind the neck stem. Mainly for slow speed in parking lots etc. I had a 1983 fxrt I bought in 1989, my first Harley! Loved that bike, however I did the exact opposite of what you’re doing. I stripped my bike down. I was 27 at the time and didn’t want or need a fairing at the time. Wish I still had it. Want another, but I have my ‘06 dyna.

Pretty good history lesson! Most FXR fans get it wrong. I owned the ugliest stock FXR I've ever seen in person after buying it new in '88 then beating the snot out of it for thirty years, parking it outdoors in all weathers with no cover, and all it needed was basic maintenance and the usual drive belt, alternator and wear parts like brake pads for well over 100K miles (I ran many years with no speedo since they're kind of useless). Evos are simpler than many riding mowers and easy to care for even if the last owner was a moron. That said if you aren't a mechanic you probably don't need an old motorcycle. However I wouldn't want a stock machine because lots of parts are well worth upgrading. I install Ram Jett solid intakes on all my Evos because the HD intakes (both styles) are mongtarded and beg for leaks. I threw mine in the trash where they belong. I run taller final drive gearing because stock gearing is for fat riders with hippopotamous ol' ladies. The stock Keihin was decent (after an Andrews pump cover, rejet and aiming the accel squirter centered in the bore. The stock single piston brakes eat leper anus and I'm not a leper so I immediately installed the HD dual disc kit (and later upgraded to four piston non-Brembo takeoffs which are vastly better calipers). The stock INA cam bearings are famous for failure so it got a Torrington as it should along with a cam change (the stock cam is crippled for emissions) to a Crane 296-2. The stock crossover works great after pressing out the welch plugs from the mufflers. Do NOT replace with drag pipes. I had to downjet to make that work so I went back to stock. I also bought a '94 FXLR and replaced the short, low travel stock forks (FXLRs are for midgets) with FXRT forks and of course added dual discs (and spoked mags when ya could buy them for fifty bucks before the fad hit). It already had a carb and cam and dual coil ignition from the previous owner. If ya want an FXR to collect buy a nice stock one and don't ride it to preserve that money. If ya want a rider buy an ugly one then mod the snot out of it (I added a bagger box with integral oil sump and S&S V124. Fun fact, John Favill of Norton Commando fame was responsible for most of the Evo engine but isn't a cult hero like Eric Buell. Favill was hired to save HD and did. HD could have solved the drivetrain install problem that killed the FXR frame with a simple removable frame rail but failed to think of that. Frames go for ~1500 with title and are a fine way to start your project.

Multiple FXR owner here and they really weren't because they had the same Evo as their contemporaries and those were not faster than a Shovelhead, just a lot more reliable. (The early Evos made about 57HP vs the ~54HP Shovels, I have a couple of Shovel Low Riders too.) Bikers believe MANY old wives tales. The first thing everyone did on either was pay the "Harley tax" and swap carb and cam while pressing out the baffles with a hydraulic press. At the time they didn't sell (the market killed FXR in the end) and were called Rubber Glides and Ugly Glides. Good for me since my '88 went cheap but I should have bought the RT next to it. Before the Marlboro Man made ruining FXR frames fashionable they were cheap which was a good thing since they don't weigh much and the Evo versions were pleasantly reliable.

I'd love to see "the factory" develop an FXR-styled bike equipped with a 131 engine. I'm dreaming. A lower weight to a higher power ratio has always sounded good to me. Kudos to a pal of mine who's building his version of an FXR (powered by an S&S 128 engine and Baker drivetrain).

FXR in Blighty 🇬🇧 turn up to you’re local café and look down your nose at everyone else..... including as other HD riders, especially the Dyna and Sporty crowd oh the simple pheasants aspiring to reach the reaaaaaal biker. Then when a cloud wafts into view, casually walk over and rumble that beast into life give a good couple of blasts of the throttle so all know the king is retiring for the night to watch in amazement as you begin your “real biker” long ride home over 2miles away to pack that baby up for another week in the garage. Because you don’t own an FXR no, you’re a custodian of greatness matched perfectly with your own magnanimous personality....... 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂🤣😂

ACTUALLY, (at least in New England), they do appear to be getting cheaper! I mean, $5-6k which is down from the $7-10k folks wanted for one in suspect shape only a year ago. The FXR being the cool hipster Harley phase didn’t last that long, so if you can hold out for another year or so, I imagine they’ll be in line with what 80s evo sportsters go for.

That movie ruined MANY FXRs because of the stupid rake job which destroys the only great feature of an FXR, the handling! Please use an aftermarket frame instead since you're after the look and not the performance. It will be cheaper too and you can bolt in a much later drivetrain including a Twin Cam or M8. The identical look can be gotten with a Dyna (much more common and less expensive) too. That Marlboro Man thing is pure "bar bike" which is fine (most HDs are owned by posers anyway) so best not to butcher a real FXR frame for no gain. Noobs don't understand how those changes affect motorcycles.

Gotta love the "troublehead" Harleys. I bought a used factory black and orange 1982 80th Anniversary FX Sturgis edition for $3k back 1992. At almost 30 years ago since i purchased the 82, its not the oldest bike i own, (71 FLH) but it is the longest i have ever had one sit around in rideable condition and i cant ever see it leaving home in the absence of a ridiculous amount of money offered when i've been drinking an equally ridiculous amount of alcohol. Its big twin 80" engine runs like a scalded dog with its ass on fire and other then the factory satin black rocker covers and matching black "ham can" air breather, its identical to the other FX models of the later 70s and mid 80s. It doesnt have that profile that would eventually become synonymous with the "Dyna" name, but, the one big difference that sets her kind apart from the later model evos is her iconic, "potato, potato, potato.." shovelhead sound.

The fxr is actually the bike that “won” the market against the Japanese bikes at the time in the late 80’s. as a big middle finger to japan after, then they produced the fatboy. The name was no coincidence along with the original paint scheme. It was grey with 7 yellow stripes the same as each a bomb that was dropped on japan. I own a 94 fxlr and love all the history!

Early FXR chassis were some of H-D's first cadcam designed components. The engineers at H-D got rid of the frame castings and used steel plate here and there, as well as a square shape for the frame's backbone. They handle pretty well (given decent suspension). I had some pals who owned Shovelhead-powered (stock) FXRs. They were "marginal" when it came to engine performance. The Evo engines were a major upgrade (my humble opinion). Sonny Barger once said the FXRs were great bikes (all around). I liked the gas tank/console on the early FXRs. Josh, I envision some S&S goodness in your FXR's future. Ride safe -- W

Nope, but the frame is very good for a Harley which is like being the fastest runner in the Special Olympics. I have two FXRs (including an '88 owned since new), picked up a third bare frame for another project and certainly like them but everything BUT the frame is thoroughly outdated and the early ones had many parts in need of upgrade which the factory eventually did. Bikers are like teenage girls when it comes to fanboi-ism and few will actually use what an FXR does. The stock Evo engine is a slug. the cases have issues (output shaft race walk, stud pulling, cracks) so if building a hot rod a crate engine is the best solution, the early transmission with tapered shaft and Hitachi starter and pathetic clutch is best replaced by a later splined shaft box with Denso starter, and the early brakes only managed not to suck by Harley standards ( at the time a bunch of old men who came off drum-braked junk were easy to impress). Fortunately FXR frames fit every big twin engine with a bit of work and there are tons of brake, engine, transmission, swingarm and suspension upgrades and they're not expensive to build unless the owner wants it that way. An old FXR donor and less than ten grand can make a very good Harley.

I just had an 83 FXR in my shop that is very stock. I did a bunch of work on it and it runs good but has a shifting problem I didn't try to fix.

Sitting in my office at work today and watching your video. Love it when you joke about the hipster stuff, because Milwaukee Wisconsin is overflowing with Pabst beer drinking hipsters who rip on Harleys because most cant even afford a Krusty Glide!

I've been looking at fxr's. I like how they speak to you 😄. I know it sounds weird, but that's me 😂. Hopefully my finances will get line back out and I can go get one. A small proportion of head vlog's at the end of videos are awesome. " Keep on keeping on" ✌🍺

I have a 1982 FXR. First year for FXR. Shovelhead . 100 percent original. matching numbers and original paint. Hate the thing LOL. Not for sale as its only gonna increase in value. I also have a 1986 FXR. Modified to fit my needs. I ride that one.

Back in the day when you had to wait 9 months to get a Harley. Build quality was the best as they were blowing out the AMF QC skimping. 1300+ EVO? Fuel dripper carb with cut off toggle. Great for warm climates for sure. Classic Car of Motorcycles. The frame looked Japanese? It was always the Engine, Air Cleaner, and Plastic that made Japanese - Japanese looking bikes. You'd have to be a real purist to say, "The frame looks like a Rice Burner!" Maybe the non traditional tail fender? Keep the 7 inch light as it is dealer add on original. Sort of like the Dealer Made Cadillac El Camino pick ups. The dealer put some weird on it.

YES!!! Saw the crossbones in the background. I have always wanted one but where I'm at nobody wants to get rid of them, if you even see one. So what did I do when I did find one? I traded in my 2018 SGS to get it. Guess what, now my wife wants trade in her softail slim for one as well. You should do a review of one shadetree. There are literally no actual reviews to be found on the crossbones. All there is are dealers trying to sell them on youtube from years ago. Better yet buy one and show us youtube techs how to, er not to, work on them!

94' FXDL Owner Here .. I will say the FXR has one hell of a frame and they are nice bikes but with that soild frame comes about 10 extra pounds of weight compared to the early 90's FXDL's .. Plus the early 90's FXDL's has breaks for day compared to the FXR's .. Hell, I pretty much love every carbureted Harley Davidson motorcycles built to be honest.. I didn't mind when cars went from old carburetors to fuel injection but I can't imagine I'll every own another fuel injected Harley " two completely different experience " Davidson , but the people that ride them are two different type of people for the most part ..
